Book Assessing Economic Tradeoffs in Forest Management

Download or read book Assessing Economic Tradeoffs in Forest Management written by Ernie Niemi and published by . This book was released on 1997-06-01 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describes a method for assessing the competing demands of forest resources in a forest management plan by addressing economics values, economic impacts, and perceptions of fairness around each demand. Economic trends and forces that shape the dynamic ecosystem-economy relation are developed. The method is demonstrated through an illustrative analysis of a forest-management decision in the southern Appalachian Mountains. This report provides a technically sound, but readily understandable, method for assessing the full range of economic consequences that accompanies forest-management decisions. Also includes a 32-page report, "Role of Nonmarket Economic Values in Benefit-Cost Analysis of Public Forest Management."

Book Weed Control Economics

Download or read book Weed Control Economics written by Bruce Archibald Auld and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FROM THE PREFACE: Weeds reduce agricultural output and/or add to the costs of production and are therefore important economically. Moreover weed research scientists, administrators, and farmers make decisions about allocating resources (i.e. make economic decisions) every day. Weed control and economics are inseparable in an agricultural production context and the economic effects of weeds are diverse and complex. In this book we have endeavoured to present a broad but penetrating view of the impact of weeds and assessment of their control. The book is aimed to provide agricultural scientists, administrators, advisors, and students with a greater appreciation of the economic impact of weeds and of the economic assessment of weed control strategies and methods. For agricultural economists, the book will provide an agronomic background and an economic framework for tackling issues in weed control and research.

Book Weed Risk Assessment

  • Pages : 272 pages

Download or read book Weed Risk Assessment written by R. H. Groves and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2001 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The impact of invasive species on native vegetation is a major threat to biodiversity all over the world - a threat ranked second only to habitat destruction. Other negative effects of weed invasions include reduced ecosystem services, loss to agricultural production and impacts on human health. This work covers the discipline of risk assessment as applied to the invasion ecology of plants. Taking a global context, it synthesizes theories on plant invasions, introduces a variety of models for weed risk assessment, and addresses procedures for ranking invasive species on a range of scales to determine weeds of national significance. It shows how the application of risk assessment to weed invasion may help reduce weed impact and thereby improve living conditions for people throughout the world. This text is aimed at invasions ecologists, botanists, quarantine officers, policy-makers and community groups wanting to know more about this developing discipline.

Book Efficacy and Economics of Cultural and Mechanical Weed Control Practices for Herbicide resistant Weed Management

Download or read book Efficacy and Economics of Cultural and Mechanical Weed Control Practices for Herbicide resistant Weed Management written by Elizabeth G. Mosqueda and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proactive herbicide resistant weed management (HRWM) practices are underused in many cropping systems. This may be due, in part, to a lack of knowledge on the impact of non-herbicide management practices on herbicide-resistant (HR) weed development. By determining the efficacy and economic impacts of non-herbicide weed management on development of herbicide resistance, we hope to prolong the efficacy of herbicides, thereby reducing the evolution and spread of new HR weed species. A four year study was conducted in the Northern Great Plains to evaluate the impacts of tillage, crop rotation, and herbicide regime on ALS-resistant kochia (Bassia scoparia) development, economic feasibility, and enrichment of herbicide resistance over time. Crops with more dense canopies and closely spaced rows and treated with non ALS-herbicides significantly reduced kochia emergence compared to crops with less dense canopies and treated with ALS-herbicides only. Over time, more diverse crop rotations and treating with ALS-herbicide mixtures resulted in reduced kochia density, seed production, and additions to the weed seedbank compared to less diverse crop rotations and ALS-herbicide rotations. The final year of the study, increased yields and returns over variable cost and owner’s labor were observed within a four crop rotation opposed to monoculture, two, and three crop rotations. Enrichment of resistance over time was found to have little to no influence between less and more diverse cultural, mechanical, and chemical weed management programs.

Book The Future Role of Pesticides in US Agriculture

Download or read book The Future Role of Pesticides in US Agriculture written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-11-02 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although chemical pesticides safeguard crops and improve farm productivity, they are increasingly feared for their potentially dangerous residues and their effects on ecosystems. The Future Role of Pesticides explores the role of chemical pesticides in the decade ahead and identifies the most promising opportunities for increasing the benefits and reducing the risks of pesticide use. The committee recommends R&D, program, and policy initiatives for federal agriculture authorities and other stakeholders in the public and private sectors. This book presents clear overviews of key factors in chemical pesticide use, including: Advances in genetic engineering not only of pest-resistant crops but also of pests themselves. Problems in pesticide useâ€"concerns about the health of agricultural workers, the ability of pests to develop resistance, issues of public perception, and more. Impending shifts in agricultureâ€"globalization of the economy, biological "invasions" of organisms, rising sensitivity toward cross-border environmental issues, and other trends. With a model and working examples, this book offers guidance on how to assess various pest control strategies available to today's agriculturist.
