Book Assessing Temporal Associations in Recall

Download or read book Assessing Temporal Associations in Recall written by Namrata Godbole and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Presentation of cues during recall impairs recall of non-cued items (part-set cuing effect). Assessment of retrieval strategies (i.e. temporal associations) within the part-set cuing paradigm can lead to a better understanding of the mechanisms underlying the poorer recall of non-cued items. Research has shown that randomly ordered cues lead to greater memory impairment than cues presented in the original order of the list. These findings support the strategy disruption account, which proposes that cues disrupt participants' original retrieval strategy. In the present study, I used the part-set cuing paradigm to investigate the nature of this disruption. While the results lent support to the strategy disruption account, they also provided a new perspective, which focuses specifically on the disruption in the use of temporal context during cued recall."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

Book Stevens Handbook of Experimental Psychology and Cognitive Neuroscience Set

Download or read book Stevens Handbook of Experimental Psychology and Cognitive Neuroscience Set written by John T. Wixted and published by Wiley. This book was released on 2018-04-10 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the first edition was published in 1951, The Stevens' Handbook of Experimental Psychology has been recognized as the standard reference in the field. The most recent (3rd) edition of the handbook was published in 2004, and it was a success by any measure. But the field of experimental psychology has changed in dramatic ways since then. Throughout the first 3 editions of the handbook, the changes in the field were mainly quantitative in nature. That is, the size and scope of the field grew steadily from 1951 to 2004, a trend that was reflected in the growing size of the handbook itself: the 1-volume first edition (1951) was succeeded by a 2-volume second edition (1988) and then by a 4-volume third edition (2004). Since 2004, however, this still-growing field has also changed qualitatively in the sense that, in virtually every subdomain of experimental psychology, theories of the mind have evolved into theories of the brain. Research methods in experimental psychology have changed accordingly and now include not only venerable EEG recordings (long a staple of research in psycholinguistics) but also MEG, fMRI, TMS, and single-unit recording. The trend towards neuroscience is an absolutely dramatic, worldwide phenomenon that is unlikely to ever be reversed. Thus, the era of purely behavioral experimental psychology is already long gone, even though not everyone has noticed. Experimental psychology and "cognitive neuroscience" (an umbrella term that includes behavioral neuroscience, social neuroscience and developmental neuroscience) are now inextricably intertwined. Nearly every major psychology department in the country has added cognitive neuroscientists to its ranks in recent years, and that trend is still growing. A viable handbook of experimental psychology should reflect the new reality on the ground. There is no handbook in existence today that combines basic experimental psychology and cognitive neuroscience, this despite the fact that the two fields are interrelated – and even interdependent – because they are concerned with the same issues (e.g., memory, perception, language, development, etc.). Almost all neuroscience-oriented research takes as its starting point what has been learned using behavioral methods in experimental psychology. In addition, nowadays, psychological theories increasingly take into account what has been learned about the brain (e.g., psychological models increasingly need to be neurologically plausible). These considerations explain why this edition of: The Stevens' Handbook of Experimental Psychology is now called The Stevens' Handbook of Experimental Psychology and Cognitive Neuroscience. The title serves as a reminder that the two fields go together and as an announcement that the Stevens' Handbook covers it all. The 4th edition of the Stevens’ Handbook is a 5-volume set structured as follows: I. Learning & Memory: Elizabeth Phelps & Lila Davachi (Volume Editors) Topics include fear learning; time perception; working memory; visual object recognition; memory and future imagining; sleep and memory; emotion and memory; attention and memory; motivation and memory; inhibition in memory; education and memory; aging and memory; autobiographical memory; eyewitness memory; and category learning. Book Age related Differences on a New Test of Temporal Order Memory for Everyday Tasks

Download or read book Age related Differences on a New Test of Temporal Order Memory for Everyday Tasks written by and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Temporal order memory involves the ability to remember the order in which events are experienced across time. Memory for the temporal order of events is critically important in daily life and is adversely affected by healthy aging. Age-related changes in temporal order memory may stem from functional and structural changes in the frontal and temporal lobes. While previous laboratory tests have measured temporal order memory, most do not relate to everyday experiences and none are standardized. We designed a new test to examine age-related differences in incidental temporal order memory for a self-generated sequence of tasks one might complete in everyday life. Young and older adults completed the new Temporal Order of Everyday Events (TOEV) test assessing immediate free recall, delayed free recall, and cued delayed-recall for the temporal order of events in a sequence. Participants were given 10 cards, each listing a task one might accomplish in a typical day. Participants were asked to self-generate a “to do” list by placing the 10 cards in a temporal sequence representing the order in which they would accomplish the tasks. Immediate recall was assessed by asking participants to verbally list the tasks in the same order as the sequence was generated during encoding. Following a 20 min delay, delayed recall was assessed using the same procedure. Finally, delayed cued-recall and recognition memory were assessed. Standardized neuropsychological measures of verbal memory, executive functioning, visuospatial perception, attention, motor function and reading were administered to assess preliminary evidence for construct validity. We found evidence for age-related deficits in temporal order memory for a self-generated sequence (with incidental encoding) consistent with an encoding profile, in the context intact recognition for items in the sequence. As predicted, performance on the TOEV was correlated with measures of memory and executive functioning, providing preliminary evidence for convergent validity. Performance on measures not theoretically related to the construct did not correlate with performance on the TOEV, providing preliminary evidence for divergent validity. Our task is portable, can be rapidly administered in clinical or laboratory settings, and may assess real world aspects of temporal order memory critical in daily life.

Book Neuropsychological Assessment

Download or read book Neuropsychological Assessment written by Muriel Deutsch Lezak and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-03-27 with total page 2638 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now in its Fifth Edition, Neuropsychological Assessment reviews the major neurobehavioral disorders associated with brain dysfunction and injury. This is the 35th anniversary of the landmark first edition. As with previous editions, this edition provides a comprehensive coverage of the field of adult clinical neuropsychology in a single source. By virtue of the authors' clinical and research specializations, this book provides a broad-based and in-depth coverage of current neuroscience research and clinical neuropsychology practice. While the new edition is updated to include new features and topics, it remains true to the highly-regarded previous editions. Methods for obtaining optimum data are given in the form of hypothesis-testing techniques, clinical tips, and clinical examples. In the seven years since the previous edition, many advancements have been made in techniques for examining brain function and in our knowledge about brain-behavior relationships. For example, a surge of functional imaging data has emerged and new structural imaging techniques have provided exquisite detail about brain structure. For the first time, this edition includes examples of these advancements, many in stunning color. This edition also includes new tools for clinicians such as a neuroimaging primer and a comparison table of the neuropsychological features of progressive dementias. The chapters on assessment procedures include discussion of issues related to test selection and reviews of recently published as well as older test batteries used in general neuropsychological assessment, plus newly developed batteries for specific issues.

Book Detail and Temporal Structure in Memory for Real world Experiences

Download or read book Detail and Temporal Structure in Memory for Real world Experiences written by Nicholas Benjamin Diamond and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Episodic memory was initially defined as our ability to relive event-specific details and to remember the temporal context in which those details occurred. A rich tradition of laboratory studies has focused on memory organization, but the to-be-remembered stimuli bore little resemblance to real-world experiences. Conversely, autobiographical memory studies provide greater ecological validity but are limited in their measurement of recall organization. In this dissertation, I report three behavioural experiments that examine temporal structure in memory for real-world episodes, its relation to memory detail, and how these dimensions change with increasing age and remoteness. Chapter 2 describes an experiment probing remote temporal order and item recognition memory for objects encountered in a museum exhibit, using photographs of the exhibit and similar lures. Lure discrimination declined more than temporal order memory across a lifespan sample, although aging was associated with decreased flexibility in reconstructing order. Chapter 3 investigated how memory for the details and temporal structure of a single extended event change over time, using verbal true/false tests and a within-subjects delay manipulation. Memory for specific details declined rapidly whereas memory for temporal order was stable from 1 hour to 1 month and increased significantly overnight. Aging was associated with a marked decline in order memory at all delays, in contrast to a subtler and time-dependent decline in detail memory. Chapter 4 describes a study examining spontaneous temporal organization in free recall of extended real-world episodes. Younger and older adults tended to cluster their recall according to temporal proximity with a forward-going bias, extending principles of recall dynamics in laboratory studies to autobiographical-like memory. Moreover, more temporally organized memories were also denser in episodic detail, suggesting a relationship between structure and phenomenology within single recall narratives. Overall, these studies bridge a gap between laboratory memory and autobiographical memory literatures and methods, and provide a richer picture both of how we remember past episodes, and how we fail to do so. More specifically, they suggest that temporal organization is a critical determinant of memory success and quality over long timescales and is particularly vulnerable to age-related decline.
