Book Spatial Patterns of Co occurrence of the European Wildcat Felis Silvestris Silvestris and Domestic Cats Felis Silvestris Catus in the Bavarian Forest National Park

This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: After persecution and a long period of extinction in parts of central Europe, the European wildcat is currently increasing its range, also to areas deemed unsuitable for this species. This range expansion facilitates close contact with domestic cats, which can reach high population densities even in protected areas. We provide unambiguous evidence that the European wildcat is present in the Bavarian Forest National Park. We assessed the frequency of domestic cat occurrence, and analyzed the distributions of the two felid subspecies with regard to residential areas, forested habitat, elevation and protected areas, and analyzed their spatial overlap. Camera traps installed in the national park detected six putative wildcats in 2008-2015 at elevations between 800 and 1100 m a.s.l. Genetic analysis of material obtained from hair traps with valerian-treated lure sticks confirmed the presence of three wildcat individuals in early 2015. The number of wildcat events detected increased slightly in recent years and wildcats were detected closer to shrub cover and the forest edge. Of the domestic cat events, 90% were within 1.1 km of residential areas, but some moved up to nearly 3 km into the national park. Ranges of wildcats and domestic cats broadly overlapped. All but one camera trap that recorded wildcats also recorded domestic cats, and some camera traps recorded domestic cats but no wildcats. Domestic cats were the fifth most often detected mammal species in the protected area. To avoid a negative impact of domestic cats on wildcats through hybridization, which might already occur, and considering the ecological impact of predation by domestic cats, we recommend a buffer zone of 1 km surrounding the national park, where domestic cats should not be allowed outdoors

Book The European Wildcat as a Model for the Study of Wildlife

Download or read book The European Wildcat as a Model for the Study of Wildlife written by Marie-Pauline Beugin and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hybridization and infectious diseases are two major issues for wildlife conservation worldwide. The European wildcat Felis silvestris silvestris, through its interactions with its close relative the domestic cat Felis silvestris catus, represents a valuable model for the study of these two issues and their interactions. The European wildcat is both threatened by hybridization and infectious diseases. This, combined with the high diversity of environments where it lives throughout Europe, allows to lead comparative studies and to understand which environmental determinants impact gene and pathogen flows. Here we propose two new methodological developments for the detection of hybrids based on genetic markers allowing for a better comparability between studies and leading to a fast detection of hybrids respectively. Hybrid detection and assessment of spatial relatedness pattern were carried out in two local populations of European wildcats differing mostly on the level of fragmentation of their environment. On one of this population, we led a serological survey to investigate whether domestic cats and wildcats exchange some of the most common viruses of the domestic cat (FPV, FHV, FCV, FIV). We found a higher rate of hybridization in the most fragmented environment. There, the wildcat population, in spite of the domestic cats surrounding it that were infected at high prevalence with the viruses, was not infected by any of the viruses. The presence of genetic or behavioral barriers may explain this result in an environment that is not incompatible with the persistence of generalist strains. The local sampling achieved in this work allowed us to investigate mechanisms behind hybridization and viruses' circulation. At the time, the European wildcat does not seem threatened by domestic cats. However, preventive measures should be taken to prevent a future increase in frequency of the phenomenon both for the control of gene and virus flows.

Over the following centuries, they became popular household pets and are regularly shown in tomb paintings of family life. This volume draws on artistic and written sources to show how they became widely-esteemed and revered animals in Egypt.

Book The Biology and Conservation of Wild Felids

Download or read book The Biology and Conservation of Wild Felids written by David Macdonald and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2010-06-03 with total page 782 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The editors utilize their 50 years of combined experience in professional engagement with the behaviour and ecology of wild felids to draw together a unique network of the world's most respected and knowledgeable experts. For the first time, this inter-disciplinary research programme is brought together within a single volume. Beginning with a complete account of all 36 felid species, there follow 8 comprehensive review chapters that span all the topics most relevant to felid conservation science, including evolution and systematics, felid form and function, genetic applications, behavioural ecology, management of species that come into conflict with people and control of international trade in felid species, conservation tools/techniques, ex situ management, and felid diseases. 19 detailed case studies then delve deeply into syntheses of the very best species investigations worldwide, written by all the leading figures in the field. These chapters portray the unique attributes of the wild felids, describe their fascinating (and conflicting) relationship with humans, and create an unparalleled platform for future research and conservation measures. A final chapter analyses the requirements of, and inter-disciplinary approaches to, practical conservation with cutting-edge examples of conservation science and action that go far beyond the cat family.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the PREFACE. Some few years ago, when reading a review of Knox's 'Autumns on the Spey, ' I came upon the following passage: -" There is no British mammal, or reputed British mammal, of whose character, locality, and even existence we are so totally ignorant as the Wild Cat." This surprised me, particularly as it was from the pen of a well-known writer on natural history; so, with the view of giving a somewhat more connected history of this animal than is usually found in books on natural history, more especially as it was the only example of the Feline family indigenous to Britain, and on the point of becoming extinct, I commenced collecting together all available information relating to this subject, both on the Continent and in this country. I did not expect to find any difficulty in being able to define the Wild Cat (Felis catus) as a distinct species. The task, however, was not so easy as I anticipated, for I found that the characteristics relied on by most authors as specific were not persistent, were at times absent, and were also often present in the Domestic Cat. Moreover, on a careful examination of a number of examples of the Wild Cat of the present time I found many indications of a mixture of the two races. It would seem as if the original Wild Cat, as it existed in the olden days, has been almost exterminated throughout Europe, and that its place has been taken by a mongrel race, the result of continual interbreeding during many centuries (2000 years) of the Wild and the imported Domestic Cat, whose original ancestor was probably the Caffer Cat (Felis caffra)....

Dr. Simon N. Stuart, IUCN Species Survival Commission, UK. "This important and timely volume addresses two of the most serious problems affecting biodiversity conservation today: assessing the extent to which protected areas are impacted by biological invasions and the complex problems of managing these impacts. Written by leading specialists, it provides a comprehensive overview of the issues and gives detailed examples drawn from protected areas across the world". Professor Vernon H. Heywood, School of Biological Sciences, University of Reading, UK
