Book Assessing Cetacean Surveys Throughout the Mediterranean Sea a Gap Analysis in Environmental Space

Download or read book Assessing Cetacean Surveys Throughout the Mediterranean Sea a Gap Analysis in Environmental Space written by Laura Mannocci and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Heterogeneous data collection in the marine environment has led to large gaps in our knowledge of marine species distributions. To fill these gaps, models calibrated on existing data may be used to predict species distributions in unsampled areas, given that available data are sufficiently representative. Our objective was to evaluate the feasibility of mapping cetacean densities across the entire Mediterranean Sea using models calibrated on available survey data and various environmental covariates. We aggregated 302,481 km of line transect survey effort conducted in the Mediterranean Sea within the past 20 years by many organisations. Survey coverage was highly heterogeneous geographically and seasonally: large data gaps were present in the eastern and southern Mediterranean and in non-summer months. We mapped the extent of interpolation versus extrapolation and the proportion of data nearby in environmental space when models calibrated on existing survey data were used for prediction across the entire Mediterranean Sea. Using model predictions to map cetacean densities in the eastern and southern Mediterranean, characterised by warmer, less productive waters, and more intense eddy activity, would lead to potentially unreliable extrapolations. We stress the need for systematic surveys of cetaceans in these environmentally unique Mediterranean waters, particularly in non-summer months

Book Environmental Assessment for the Issuance of a Scientific Research Permit for Cetacean Surveys in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans

Download or read book Environmental Assessment for the Issuance of a Scientific Research Permit for Cetacean Surveys in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans written by and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) proposes to issue a scientific research permit for takes of marine mammals in the wild, pursuant to the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972, as amended (MMPA; 16 U.S.C. 1361 et seq.) and the Endangered Species Act of 1973, as amended (ESA; 16 U.S.C. 1531 et seq.). The permit would be valid for five years from the date of issuance and would authorize harassment of several cetacean species for observations, photo-identification, videography, passive acoustic recordings, and biopsy sampling during vessel surveys and the import and/or export of parts. The action area for the proposed study includes regions of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The objectives of the proposed research are to determine contaminant levels and culture cells from cetacean species while collecting data on abundance, movement and distribution patterns, habitat use, energetics, behaviors, and stock and social structures. Under NOAA Administrative Order 216-6, NMFS' issuance of scientific research permits pursuant to MMPA Section 104 is, in general categorically excluded from requirements of the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA; 42 U.S.C. 4321 et seq.) to prepare an environmental assessment (EA) or environmental impact statement (EIS). However, an EA has been prepared to facilitate a more thorough assessment of potential impacts on endangered and threatened species"--Page [1].

Book Environmental Assessment for Selected Regions in the Mediterranean Sea

Download or read book Environmental Assessment for Selected Regions in the Mediterranean Sea written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document contains a section of environmental parameters that is part of a larger Mediterranean Sea area acoustic assessment compiled under the auspices of the ASW Environmental Acoustics Support Project Office. Its contents reflect an environmental description of the geology, oceanography, sound speed variability, and currents in selected areas of the Mediterranean Sea. The geology section addresses the physiography, sediment thickness, dispositional processes, volcanism, and seismicity of each region. In many areas, the oceanographic section represents a significant update, since it includes available documentation resulting from two large-scale multinational field investigations: the Physical Oceanography of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Western Mediterranean Circulation Experiment. The sound speed section, based on the Master Oceanographic Observation Data Set, is a tailored analysis of both temporal variability and profile gradient changes. This analysis results in the selection of the closest actual sound speed profiles to the arithmetic average. The section on currents focuses on the availability and description of abyssal current data and includes results from the Naval Oceanographic and Atmospheric Research Laboratory Layered Circulation Model.

Book Bridging the Gap Between Policy and Science in Assessing the Health Status of Marine Ecosystems 2nd Edition

Download or read book Bridging the Gap Between Policy and Science in Assessing the Health Status of Marine Ecosystems 2nd Edition written by Angel Borja and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2017-03-22 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marine management requires approaches which bring together the best research from the natural and social sciences. It requires stakeholders to be well-informed by science and to work across administrative and geographical boundaries, a feature especially important in the inter-connected marine environment. Marine management must ensure that the natural structure and functioning of ecosystems is maintained to provide ecosystem services. Once those marine ecosystem services have been created, they deliver societal goods as long as society inputs its skills, time, money and energy to gather those benefits. However, if societal goods and benefits are to be limitless, society requires appropriate administrative, legal and management mechanisms to ensure that the use of such benefits do not impact on environmental quality, but instead support its sustainable use.

Book Mare Plasticum The Plastic Sea

Download or read book Mare Plasticum The Plastic Sea written by Marilena Streit-Bianchi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-07-23 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, written by a multidisciplinary team of authors comprising scientists, artists and communicators, explores one of the most pressing issues of our time – the menace plastics pose to marine environments and organisms. It takes readers on a journey that begins on the beaches of Galicia, where the beach litter formed the starting point for an exhibition that combines art and science to alert the audience to the urgent need for action. The journey culminates with a short “plastic story”, which reveals a disturbing vision of the future significance of plastics for humans, and an example of how comics can deliver information to a younger audience. Along the way there is plenty of fascinating science, such as insights into the impacts of plastics and microplastics; the new marine ecosystem, known as the “plastisphere”; and the current status of the oceans, from the Arctic to the Mediterranean. The book also explores the historical developments; sustainable solutions, including the use of circular economy methodologies; and protective measures, like those being tried in China and the Far East. Lastly, it describes the role played by rivers as transport vectors for plastic, with special reference to the Danube, and to complete the picture, since most of the plastic is of terrestrial origin, it investigates problems related to microplastics in soils.
