This book was released on 2020-08-31 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 2007 the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) have recommended voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) as an important strategy for the prevention of heterosexually acquired HIV in men in settings where the prevalence of heterosexually transmitted HIV is high. Over 25 million men and adolescent boys in East and Southern Africa have been reached with VMMC services. These new guidelines update earlier WHO recommendations to maximize the HIV prevention impact of safe VMMC services and aim to guide the transition to the sustained provision of interventions with a focus on the health and well-being of both adolescent boys and men.

Book Safe Voluntary Informed Male Circumcision and Comprehensive HIV Prevention Programming

Download or read book Safe Voluntary Informed Male Circumcision and Comprehensive HIV Prevention Programming written by Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS. and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2009 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the world HIV prevalence is generally lower in populations that practice male circumcision than in populations where most men are uncircumcised. This has been observed over the years of the epidemic and has been confirmed by three randomized controlled trials concluded in 2005-2006. The results have led to the conclusion that male circumcision is an effective risk-reduction measure for men and should be used in addition to other known strategies for the prevention of heterosexually acquired infection. This book provides guidance to decision makers on human rights, ethical and legal considerations that need to be addressed before planning to provide male circumcision services within the response to HIV.

Book Promoting Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health in East and Southern Africa

Download or read book Promoting Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health in East and Southern Africa written by Knut-Inge Klepp and published by Nordiska Afrikainstitutet. This book was released on 2008 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Africa, as in many parts of the world, adolescent reproductive health is a controversial issue for policy makers and programme planners. Adolescents are particularly vulnerable to HIV and AIDS and to a host of other problems such as sexually transmitted infection, unwanted pregnancy, unsafe abortions, sexual abuse, female genital mutilation and unsafe circumcision. Yet many countries do not have adolescent health policies in place and much remains to be done to ensure that adolescents can access appropriate sexual and reproductive health services. The authors of this volume present new perspectives and strategies to promote adolescent sexual and reproductive health. In particular, they make a unique attempt to bring together social and biomedical science and to disseminate concrete empirical evidence from existing programmes, carefully analysing what works and what does not at the local level.

Book HIV AIDS in South Africa 25 Years On

Download or read book HIV AIDS in South Africa 25 Years On written by Poul Rohleder and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-09-01 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much has happened since the first appearance of AIDS in 1981: it has been identified, studied, and occasionally denied. The virus has shifted host populations and spread globally. Medicine, the social sciences, and world governments have joined forces to combat and prevent the disease. And South Africa has emerged as ground zero for the pandemic. The editors of HIV/AIDS in South Africa 25 Years On present the South African crisis as a template for addressing the myriad issues surrounding the epidemic worldwide, as the book brings together a widely scattered body of literature, analyzes psychosocial and sexual aspects contributing to HIV transmission and prevention, and delves into complex intersections of race, gender, class, and politics. Including largely overlooked populations and issues (e.g., prisoners, persons with disabilities, stigma), as well as challenges shaping future research and policy, the contributors approach their topics with rare depth, meticulous research, carefully drawn conclusions, and profound compassion. Among the topics covered: The relationship between HIV and poverty, starting from the question, "Which is the determinant and which is the consequence?" Epidemiology of HIV among women and men: concepts of femininity and masculinity, and gender inequities as they affect HIV risk; gender-specific prevention and intervention strategies. The impact of AIDS on infants and young children: risk and protective factors; care of children by HIV-positive mothers; HIV-infected children. Current prevention and treatment projects, including local-level responses, community-based work, and VCT (voluntary counseling and testing) programs. New directions: promoting circumcision, vaccine trials, "positive prevention." South Africa’s history of AIDS denialism. The urgent lessons in this book apply both globally and locally, making HIV/AIDS in South Africa 25 Years On uniquely instructive and useful for professionals working in HIV/AIDS and global public health.
