Book excerpt: China's intrigue filled Warring States period saw the powerful state of Qin ruthlessly vanquish the other six kingdoms through subversion, deception, bribery, assassination, and military conquest. Accordingly, in the mid third century BC near the end of their successful quest to dominate the realm, a young doctor pursuing his calling as a healer in Qin's draconian world is suddenly thrust into the role of an assassin, tasked with killing an impossible target in the nearby state of Wei. Assassin's Quandary unfolds his initial experience as an itinerant healer, which serves as his cover as well as his profession; his quest to develop a viable assassination method; his encounters with murderers and charlatans; and his emotional consternation and psychological perplexity as he becomes increasingly familiar with the man and his mesmerizing daughter Ya-lan. Simultaneously, deepening involvement in Western international affairs brought meddling in Russian domestic politics and military invasion. Download or read book On Video Games written by Soraya Murray and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today over half of all American households own a dedicated game console and gaming industry profits trump those of the film industry worldwide. In this book, Soraya Murray moves past the technical discussions of games and offers a fresh and incisive look at their cultural dimensions. She critically explores blockbusters likeThe Last of Us, Metal Gear Solid, Spec Ops: The Line, Tomb Raider and Assassin's Creed to show how they are deeply entangled with American ideological positions and contemporary political, cultural and economic conflicts. As quintessential forms of visual material in the twenty-first century, mainstream games both mirror and spur larger societal fears, hopes and dreams, and even address complex struggles for recognition. This book examines both their elaborately constructed characters and densely layered worlds, whose social and environmental landscapes reflect ideas about gender, race, globalisation and urban life. In this emerging field of study, Murray provides novel theoretical approaches to discussing games and playable media as culture. Demonstrating that games are at the frontline of power relations, she reimagines how we see them - and more importantly how we understand them.

Book Palestine in the Arab Dilemma RLE Israel and Palestine

Download or read book Palestine in the Arab Dilemma RLE Israel and Palestine written by Walid W. Kazziha and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-05-22 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a long time the understanding of the Palestinian question has been dominated by the views offered by the Arab governments on the Israeli establishment. But any close examination of the policies of the Arab regimes would reveal that they have done very little to alleviate the plight of the Palestinians. Since the defeat of the Arab regime in June 1967, an increasing number of Arab scholars and intellectuals have been seriously and independently involved in reassessing the political and social conditions of their societies. This book, first published in 1979, is part of that more general attempt to discover the deep-rooted causes of defeat and the general state of socio-economic underdevelopment of the Arab region. The central theme of the four essays in this study pertains to the fluctuating relationship between the Arab regimes and the Palestinian Resistance Movement. It is within this context that the first essay examines the various factors which shaped the relationship at different intervals. The second then goes on to present a case study of how the contradictions between the Arab regimes and the Resistance Movement operate in a crisis situation and reach the level of an armed confrontation. The third essay examines the prospects for peace and war in the region in the light of the political conditions given before Sadat’s visit to Israel. And finally the fourth essay is concerned with Sadat’s peace initiative and its consequences on the relations between Egypt and the Palestinian Resistance Movement.

Book The Obligation Dilemma

  • Author : Ishtiyaque Haji
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press, USA
  • Release : 2019
  • ISBN : 0190050853
  • Pages : 321 pages

Download or read book The Obligation Dilemma written by Ishtiyaque Haji and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2019 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can you be morally obligated to do something? To renowned philosopher Ishtiyaque Haji, the answer is guardedly no. Regardless of whether determinism is true, he argues, there is a prima facie plausibility that there are no moral obligations. Powerfully and efficiently, Haji develops a conclusion that has major implications for how we conceive issues in moral responsibility and free will. The book develops the obligation dilemma as clearly as possible. The next step will be for further sustained philosophical work to solve it, assuming it can be resolved, inspired by Haji. In many respects, the obligation dilemma mirrors the well-known responsibility dilemma, where no one is morally responsible for anything. When suitably amended, the strongest recommendations in favor of, or in response to, the responsibility dilemma neither fully support nor undermine the obligation dilemma. Exposing the obligation dilemma's implications for responsibility, and its ramifications for forgiveness (something central to interpersonal relationships), underscores its urgency.
