Book The End of Greatness

Download or read book The End of Greatness written by Aaron David Miller and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2014-10-07 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Presidency has always been an implausible—some might even say an impossible—job. Part of the problem is that the challenges of the presidency and the expectations Americans have for their presidents have skyrocketed, while the president's capacity and power to deliver on what ails the nations has diminished. Indeed, as citizens we continue to aspire and hope for greatness in our only nationally elected office. The problem of course is that the demand for great presidents has always exceeded the supply. As a result, Americans are adrift in a kind of Presidential Bermuda Triangle suspended between the great presidents we want and the ones we can no longer have. The End of Greatness explores the concept of greatness in the presidency and the ways in which it has become both essential and detrimental to America and the nation's politics. Miller argues that greatness in presidents is a much overrated virtue. Indeed, greatness is too rare to be relevant in our current politics, and driven as it is by nation-encumbering crisis, too dangerous to be desirable. Our preoccupation with greatness in the presidency consistently inflates our expectations, skews the debate over presidential performance, and drives presidents to misjudge their own times and capacity. And our focus on the individual misses the constraints of both the office and the times, distorting how Presidents actually lead. In wanting and expecting our leaders to be great, we have simply made it impossible for them to be good. The End of Greatness takes a journey through presidential history, helping us understand how greatness in the presidency was achieved, why it's gone, and how we can better come to appreciate the presidents we have, rather than being consumed with the ones we want.

Book Aspire to Greatness

  • Pages : 162 pages

Download or read book Aspire to Greatness written by Nick Corso and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2012-02-25 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I decided to write this book as a way to give something back. What I did not want to do in writing it, however, is make it about me. Instead, I wanted to make it about what I have learned but couched in lessons from others who are far more recognizable. To be sure, as we go through life, we will all be faced with challenges in our personal and professional lives. Unfortunately, for many of us, the only way we will learn to deal with the situation is to progress through it. If the desire to lead pulses through your veins at all, then I encourage you to become a student of the great leaders that surround you. Do not wait and attempt to muddle your way through a career fraught with difficult situations. Be preemptive. Become a student of both the art and the science of leadership. Aspire to Greatness was written as a guide to help others develop, discover and accelerate their leadership potential through the process of awareness and the study of great leaders who have come before us. If we accomplish nothing more with this book, what I hope you learn is that leadership is a very valuable commodity in today's society and that great leaders are made, not born. Learn what others who have come before you have done and study how they have risen to greatness in their respective capacities. Leaders come in all shapes and sizes and some rise to higher levels of success than others. So, as I stated earlier, if the desire to lead pulses through your veins, then why not Aspire to Greatness and do all that you can to make yourself one of the few legendary leaders of our time.

Book Destined for Greatness

Download or read book Destined for Greatness written by Michael Ramirez and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2018-04-16 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pursuing the dream of a musical vocation—particularly in rock music—is typically regarded as an adolescent pipedream. Music is marked as an appropriate leisure activity, but one that should be discarded upon entering adulthood. How then do many men and women aspire to forge careers in music upon entering adulthood? In Destined for Greatness, sociologist Michael Ramirez examines the lives of forty-eight independent rock musicians who seek out such non-normative choices in a college town renowned for its music scene. He explores the rich life course trajectories of women and men to explore the extent to which pathways are structured to allow some, but not all, individuals to fashion careers in music worlds. Ramirez suggests a more nuanced understanding of factors that enable the pursuit of musical livelihoods well into adulthood.
