This book was released on 1982 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Logging wounds on residual aspen, in partially cut stands, predisposed wounded trees to attack by insects and diseases. Five to 7 years after cutting, aspen mortality amounted to 20%; 41% of the live trees were infected with canker diseases; and 30% were infested with wood borers. Adequate sprouting occurred even though only 60-80% of the basal area was removed.

Download or read book An Assessment of Forest Ecosystem Health in the Southwest written by Cathy W. Dahms and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report documents an ecological assessment of forest ecosystem health in the Southwest. The assessment focuses at the regional level and mostly pertains to lands administered by the National Forest System. Information is presented for use by forest and district resource managers as well as collaborative partners in the stewardship of Southwestern forests. The report establishes a scientific basis for conducting forest health projects, provides a context for planning ecosystem restoration, and contributes to the understanding of the physical, biological, and human dimensions of these ecosystems. Chapters describe Southwestern forest ecosystems of the past, changes since the Colonial Period, and the implications of those changes for the health of current and future forests. Opportunities, tools, and research needs for improving ecosystem sustainability are also identified.

Book Tree Hazards

Download or read book Tree Hazards written by David Winslow Johnson and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Defective trees are potential hazards to people and property in recreation areas. Most reported tree failures within recreation sites in the Rocky Mountain Region occur in lodgepole pine. Defective root systems account for the greatest percentage of failures. External indicators of defects are used to identify trees that may fail. Some tree species, particularly aspen, are highly susceptible to visitor damage; managers should restrict recreational development in such forest types. Old growth spruce-fir stands should also be avoided for developed sites. Systematic, annual, documented inspections of trees in recreation sites and corrective action are recommended to reduce hazards to the public.
