Book Aspen and the American Dream

Download or read book Aspen and the American Dream written by Jenny Stuber and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2021-03-23 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How is it possible for a town to exist where the median household income is about $73,000, but the median home price is about $4,000,000? Boring into the "impossible" math of Aspen, Colorado, Stuber explores how middle-class people have found a way to live in this supergentrified town. Interviewing a range of residents, policymakers, and officials, Stuber shows that what resolves the math equation between incomes and home values in Aspen, Colorado—the X-factor that makes middle-class life possible—is the careful orchestration of diverse class interests within local politics and the community. She explores how this is achieved through a highly regulatory and extractive land use code that provides symbolic and material value to highly affluent investors and part-year residents, as well as less-affluent locals, many of whom benefit from an array of subsidies—including an extensive affordable housing program—that redistribute economic resources in ways that make it possible for middle-class residents to live there. Stuber further examines how Latinos, who provide much of the service work in Aspen and who tend to live outside the town, fit into the social geography of one of the most unequal places in the country. Overall, Stuber argues that the Aspen's ability to balance the interests of its diverse class constituencies is not a foregone conclusion; rather, it is the result of efforts by local stakeholders—citizens, government, developers, and vacationers—to preserve the town’s unique feel and value, and "keep Aspen, Aspen" in all its complex dynamics.

Book Covering Government

Download or read book Covering Government written by Rob Armstrong and published by Wiley-Blackwell. This book was released on 2002-02-25 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering Government: A Civics Handbook for Journalists is the only single source of quick and concise information on the workings of American government at all levels. Spurred by recent, highly charged political events such as the contested Presidential election, Armstrong, a 25-year CBS News radio and television correspondent, has compiled the information journalists need to understand and report the stories that are breaking all around them. Covering Government is, above all, an invaluable tool -- portable, user-friendly, and with enough text to cover each subject without becoming a scholarly tome. Through annotated listings, comparative tables, and explanatory text, the author employs an array of methods to present the key information on governmental processes at federal, state, and local levels. Ideal for working newspeople in all media, Covering Government also serves as a secondary text and resource for students in journalism and political science.

Book Governing with the News

Download or read book Governing with the News written by Timothy E. Cook and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1998-02-17 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the opening decades of the republic when political parties sponsored newspapers to current governmental practices that actively subsidize the collection and dissemination of the news, the press and the government have been far from independent. Unlike those earlier days, however, the news is no longer produced by a diverse range of individual outlets but is instead the result of a collective institution that exercises collective power. In explaining how the news media of today operate as an intermediary political institution, akin to the party system and interest group system, Cook demonstrates how the differing media strategies used by governmental agencies and branches respond to the constitutional and structural weaknesses inherent in a separation-of-powers system. Cook examines the news media's capacity to perform the political tasks that they have inherited and points the way to a debate on policy solutions in order to hold the news media accountable without treading upon the freedom of the press.

Book Public Policy and Media Organizations

Download or read book Public Policy and Media Organizations written by David Berry and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-09 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public policy thinking and implementation is both a process of intellectual thought and rationale for governing. This book examines public policy and the influence news media organizations have in the production and implementation of public policy. Part I assesses the impact of political philosophy on public policy thinking and further discusses the meaning of public policy in social democratic systems. It uses the riots that occurred across England in the summer of 2011 as a case-study to focus on how the idea of the 'Big Society' was regenerated by government and used as a basis for public policy thinking. Finally, it investigates how media organizations form news representations of public policy issues that seek to contextualize and reshape policy manufactured for public consumption. Part II provides a psychological exploration of the processes which explain the connection between the media, the public and policy-makers. Does the 'common good' really drive public policy-making, or can group processes better explain what policy-makers decide? This second part of the book explores how media workers' professional identities and practices shape their decisions about how to represent policy news. It also shows how the public identities and corporate interests of media organizations shape their role as referees of public policy-making and how all this culminates in faulty decision-making about how to represent policy news, polarization in public opinion about particular policies, and shifts in policy-makers' decisions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Regulatory State, Third Edition is distinguished by a practical focus on how federal administrative agencies make decisions, how political institutions influence decisions, and how courts review those decisions. With coverage tailored to 1L or upper-level courses on the regulatory state or legislation and regulation, Bressman, Rubin, and Stack use primary source materials drawn from agency rules, adjudicatory orders, and guidance documents to show how lawyers engage agencies. Additionally, this book uses an accessible central example (auto safety) throughout to make the materials cohesive and accessible, and presents legislation with attention to modern developments in the legislative process. The Regulatory State, Third Edition also presents statutory interpretation in useful terms, highlighting the “tools” that courts employ as well as the theories that judges and scholars have offered. New to the Third Edition: Expanded discussion of agency methods of statutory implementation and regulatory interpretation Additional primary source materials Up-to-date examination of political and judicial control of agency action New chapter with a case study of the regulatory process using the main example from the book Professors and students will benefit from: Tools-based approach that highlights the methods of analysis that agencies, courts, and lawyers utilize Use of an accessible central example as a familiar entry point into a complex legal area Primary source materials—agency documents, including notice-and-comment rules, adjudicatory orders, agency guidance, and more Empirical data, normative or theoretical questions, and practical examples
