Book The labour movement in Lebanon

Download or read book The labour movement in Lebanon written by Lea Bou Khater and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2022-02-22 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The labour movement in Lebanon: Power on hold narrates the history of the Lebanese labour movement from the early twentieth century to today. Bou Khater demonstrates that trade unionism in the country has largely been a failure, for reasons including state interference, tactical co-optation, and the strategic use of sectarianism by an oligarchic elite, together with the structural weakness of a service-based laissez-faire economy. Drawing on a vast body of Arabic-language primary sources and difficult-to-access archives, the book’s conclusions are significant not only for trade unionism, but also for new forms of workers’ organisations and social movements in Lebanon and beyond. The Lebanese case study presented here holds significant implications for the wider Arab world and for comparative studies of labour. This authoritative history of the labour movement in Lebanon is vital reading for scholars of trade unionism, Lebanese politics, and political economy.

Book Arab Manpower RLE Economy of Middle East

Download or read book Arab Manpower RLE Economy of Middle East written by J.S. Birks and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-07-26 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Arab world increasingly falls into two divisions, the capital-poor and the capital-rich countries (where capital means, in essence, oil). In the capital-rich countries shortage of labour is the chief constraint on growth. In the capital-poor countries analysis of the labour market is equally central, as shortage of labour compounds the already existing problem of shortage of capital. This book surveys the labour markets of the Arab world state by state, evaluating them by demand and supply analysis, and analysing the different elements in trends of employment. It forecasts the areas of stress in the next decade and suggests ways of minimising them. The book, based on much previously unpublished information and on extensive on-the-spot research in the respective Arab countries, sets out the economic and social conditions which underly the impending crisis of development in the Arab region. First published in 1980.

Book The Refugee in the Post War World

Download or read book The Refugee in the Post War World written by Jacques Vernant and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-06-28 with total page 822 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1953, The Refugee in the Post-War World presents a comprehensive survey on the global refugee situation after the Second World War. Chapter I and II of Part I attempt a definition of what is meant by a refugee and states the problems to which the refugees give rise for the receiving countries and the international community; chapter III contains a brief account of the work of the international bodies concerned with refugees from the First World War onwards; and chapter IV tells the story of the various ethnic and national groups of refugees after the Second World War. The other parts give an analysis of the refugees’ situation in the different countries. The latter are classified in two ways: according to their place on the map and to their capacity to absorb refugees. Each chapter describing the refugee position in a particular country is divided further into three sections: an introduction intended to afford a bird's eye view of the general refugee problem in that country; a second section setting forth the main legislative provisions applicable to aliens and, more specially to refugees; and the third which gives an account of the refugees’ economic and social conditions. This is an important historical reference work for scholars and researchers of refugee studies, international relations, political studies, and immigration studies.

Book The Oxford Handbook of Contemporary Middle Eastern and North African History

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Contemporary Middle Eastern and North African History written by Jens Hanssen and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-11-30 with total page 672 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of Contemporary Middle-Eastern and North African History critically examines the defining processes and structures of historical developments in North Africa and the Middle East over the past two centuries. The Handbook pays particular attention to countries that have leapt out of the political shadows of dominant and better-studied neighbours in the course of the unfolding uprisings in the Middle East and North Africa. These dramatic and interconnected developments have exposed the dearth of informative analysis available in surveys and textbooks, particularly on Tunisia, Libya, Yemen, Bahrain and Syria.

Book Domestic Workers Across the World

Download or read book Domestic Workers Across the World written by Malte Luebker and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication sheds light on the magnitude of domestic work, a sector often "invisible" behind the doors of private households and unprotected by national legislation. The adoption of new international labour standards on domestic work (Convention No. 189 and its accompanying Recommendation No. 201) by the ILO at its 100th International Labour Conference in June 2011 represents a key milestone on the path to the realisation of decent work for domestic workers. This volume presents national statistics and new global and regional estimates on the number of domestic workers. It shows that domestic workers represent a significant share of the labour force worldwide and that domestic work is an important source of wage employment for women, especially in Latin America and Asia. It also examines the extent of inclusion or exclusion of domestic workers from key working conditions laws. In particular, it analyses how many domestic workers are covered by working time provisions, minimum wage legislation and maternity protection. The results demonstrate that under current national laws, substantial gaps in protection still remain. The volume concludes with a summary of the main findings and a reflection on the relevance of the newly adopted international standards to extend legal protection to domestic workers.
