Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Barbary macaque (all too often mistakenly called an ape) was first brought to the attention of the Conservation Working Party of the Primate Society of Great Britain late 1979 when John Fa reported that 'surplus' animals were being sent from Gibraltar to dubious locations, such as an Italian safari park. Since there had been no scientific input into the Army's management of the monkey colony on Gibraltar, and there was concern about inbreeding, nutrition and health - about the long-term viability of the colony, it was felt that the Society could help. The Gibraltar Scientific Authority and the Army were very receptive to our offer and ideas, and this topic occupied successive chairmen over the last few years - Robin Dunbar and Richard Wrangham, myself and now Miranda Stevenson - with constant prompting and help from John Fa. Considerations soon extended to the status of the species as a whole, so that there have been three main aspects:- (1) the improved health of a larger self-sustaining population on Gibraltar, (2) the status and behavioural biology of natural populations in North Africa (Morocco and Algeria), and (3) the breeding achievements in European parks and zoos, and their potential for reintroduction to suitable areas in North Africa, along with other possibilities. Robin Dunbar organized the compilation of recommendations for managing the Gibraltar colony with regard to numbers, age-sex struc ture and behavioural relationships, with some observations on diet to avoid obesity and infertility.

Book Primate Conservation Biology

Download or read book Primate Conservation Biology written by Guy Cowlishaw and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2021-08-17 with total page 511 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the snub-nosed monkeys of China to the mountain gorillas of central Africa, our closest nonhuman relatives are in critical danger worldwide. A recent report, for example, warns that nearly 20 percent of the world's primates may go extinct within the next ten or twenty years. In this book Guy Cowlishaw and Robin Dunbar integrate cutting-edge theoretical advances with practical management priorities to give scientists and policymakers the tools they need to help keep these species from disappearing forever. Primate Conservation Biology begins with detailed overviews of the diversity, life history, ecology, and behavior of primates and the ways these factors influence primate abundance and distribution. Cowlishaw and Dunbar then discuss the factors that put primates at the greatest risk of extinction, especially habitat disturbance and hunting. The remaining chapters present a comprehensive review of conservation strategies and management practices, highlighting the key issues that must be addressed to protect primates for the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of this book arises from a symposium entitled “Human-Macaque Interactions: Traditional and Modern Perspectives on Cooperation and Conflict ” organized at the 23rd Congress of the International Primatological Society, that was held in Kyoto in September 2010. The symposium highlighted the many aspects of human-macaque relations and some of the participants were invited to contribute to this volume. The volume will include about 11 chapters by a variety of international authors and some excerpts from published literature that illustrate cultural notions of macaques. Contributions from invited authors will engage with four main perspectives – traditional views of macaques, cooperative relationships between humans and macaques, current scenarios of human-macaque conflict, and how living with and beside humans has affected macaques. Authors will address these concerns through their research findings and reviews of their work on the Asian, and the lone African, macaques.

Book The Behavioral Ecology of the Tibetan Macaque

Download or read book The Behavioral Ecology of the Tibetan Macaque written by Jin-Hua Li and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-18 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book summarizes the multi-disciplinary results of one of China’s main primatological research projects on the endemic Tibetan macaque (Macaca thibetana), which had continued for over 30 years, but which had never been reported on systematically. Dedicated to this exceptional Old World monkey, this book makes the work of Chinese primatologists on the social behavior, cooperation, culture, cognition, group dynamics, and emerging technologies in primate research accessible to the international scientific community. One of the most impressive Asian monkeys, and the largest member of its genus, the Tibetan macaque deserves to be better known. This volume goes a long way towards bringing this species into the spotlight with many excellent behavioral analyses from the field. - Frans de Waal, Professor of Psychology, Emory University, USA. Macaques matter. To understand primate patterns and trends, and to gain important insight into humanity, we need to augment and expand our engagement with the most successful and widespread primate genus aside from Homo. This volume focuses on the Tibetan macaque, a fascinating species with much to tell us about social behavior, physiology, complexity and the macaque knack for interfacing with humans. This book is doubly important for primatology in that beyond containing core information on this macaque species, it also reflects an effective integrated collaboration between Chinese scholars and a range of international colleagues—exactly the type of collaborative engagement primatology needs. This volume is a critical contribution to a global primatology. - Agustín Fuentes, Professor of Anthropology, University of Notre Dame, USA. I have many fond memories of my association with Mt. Huangshan research beginning in 1983, when together with Professor Qishan Wang we established this site. It is such a beautiful place and I miss it. It is gratifying to see how far research has progressed since we began work there, becoming more internationalized and very much a collaborative endeavor under the long-term direction of Professor Jin-Hua Li and colleagues. This book highlights the increased interest in this species, representing a variety of disciplines ranging from macro aspects of behavior, cognition and sociality, to micro aspects of microbes, parasites and disease, authored by a group of renowned Chinese and international primatologists. I applaud their efforts and expect more interesting work to come from this site in the years ahead. - Kazuo Wada, Professor Emeritus, Kyoto University, Japan.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Macaca sylvanus, also referred to as the Barbary macaque, is a distinct species of primate that is indigenous to the hilly regions of North Africa. It is mostly found in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco and Algeria. The Barbary macaque is frequently confused for an ape due to its unique look, which includes a body lacking a tail, in contrast to most other macaques. These macaques are heavy-set animals, with males usually larger than females. They weigh between 10 and 16 kg and have a body length of 55 to 75 cm. Females weigh between 5 and 11 kg, making them smaller. Their thick fur, which varies in hue from light brown to grayish, insulates them from the chilly temperatures of their alpine environments. Their face is expressive, pale pink, and hairless. It can make a variety of facial emotions that are important in their social interactions. Barbary macaques are gregarious primates that typically live in groups of one to several dozen members. These troops are matriarchal, with males frequently migrating between groups and females staying in their natal groups for life. They graze on leaves, fruits, seeds, and insects found in their woodland habitat, making up an omnivorous diet. Behavior-wise, Barbary macaques are renowned for their close-knit social networks and grooming habits, which support the cohesiveness of the group. They use a sophisticated system of body language, facial gestures, and vocalizations to communicate. They are intriguing animals because of their gregarious and intellectual character, but they may be very difficult to keep as pets. The Background of Pet Barbary Macaques Because of their generally calm disposition and human-like tendencies, Barbary macaques have been kept as pets for several centuries. They were frequently kept as exotic companions by royalty and wealthy people in the past. The affluent class of the Roman Empire adored Barbary macaques because of their novelty and the status symbol they signified. Through trade and the exotic pet industry, Barbary macaques have more recently been introduced to Europe and other regions of the world. Pet owners searching for unusual and intellectual companions have found them alluring due to their endearing looks and captivating personality. But this approach has caused a lot of issues for the animals as well as their owners. The loss of wild populations has been attributed in part to the capture and transportation of Barbary macaques for the pet trade. When young macaques are removed from their natural environments, their social structures are upset, leading to severe stress and trauma. With high mortality rates from unsanitary facilities and insufficient care, the journey to their new homes is frequently difficult. Even for those that make it through, having a pet can be extremely difficult. It is challenging to give complex stimulation and a highly social environment to barbary macaques in a regular home. Their inability to engage in socializing, grooming, and foraging-all of which are natural behaviors-causes bodily and mental problems. Furthermore, because of their strong social ties, when they lack sufficient socialization or company, they may act out or become upset.

Book Primate Behaviour and Social Ecology

Download or read book Primate Behaviour and Social Ecology written by Hilary O. Box and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most obvious changes that has occurred in behavioural biology in recent years is that it has become conspicuously a problem orientated subject. Moreover, one of the most impor tant consequences of this has been to stimulate interdisciplinary links between evolutionary biology, zoology, ecology, anthro pology and psychology. The time is now right to ask questions which relate whole animals in the contexts of their ecosystems, with their social behaviour and development, with their perceptual and cog nitive capacities. These are new ways of looking at old problems, but we are still at the stage of finding out what kinds of questions to ask. For several years now I have been involved in teaching behavioural biology to students of psychology as well as zoology, and have greatly appreciated the opportunity to relate material across many different subject areas. It is the interfacing of prob lems, as in ecology and psychology for example, that makes 'more sense' of topics such as 'intelligence', responses to 'novelty', feeding strategies and socialleaming. The aim of the book is to provide readily digestible information in a number of areas of current interest in behavioural biology. Above all, it is intended to provide a basis for discussion and further inquiry.

Book Personality and the Cultural Construction of Society

Download or read book Personality and the Cultural Construction of Society written by David K. Jordan and published by University of Alabama Press. This book was released on 2010-05-31 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pyschological anthropology is a vital area of contemporary social science, and one of the field's most important and innovative thinkers is Melford E. Spiro. This volume brings together sixteen essays that review Spiro's theoretical insights and extend them into new areas. The essays center on several general problems: In what ways is it meaningful to speak of a social act as having "functions"? What elements and processes of human personality are universal, and why? What is the relationship between religion and personality? Why? What are the pyschological underpinnings of social manipulation?

Download or read book Macaque Societies written by Bernard Thierry and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-09-16 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Animal and human societies are multifaceted. In order to understand how they have evolved, it is necessary to investigate each of the constituent facets including individual abilities and personalities, life-history traits, mating systems, demographic dynamics, gene flows, social relationships, ecology and phylogeny. By exploring the nature and evolution of macaque social organization, this book develops our knowledge of the rise of societies and their transformation during the course of evolution. Macaques are the most comprehensively studied of all monkey groups, and the 20 known species feature a broad diversity in their social relationships, making them a particularly good group for exploring the evolution of societies. This book will be of primary interest to those studying animal behaviour and primatology, but will also be useful to those involved in the study of human societies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Reason for this Volume If we were to judge the seriousness of a psychosocial problem by the attention that the popular media give to it, we would have to conclude that the modem world is in the midst of an epidemic of pedophilic child sexual abuse. One can scarcely go more than a few weeks in any large metropolitan area without reading about one of the community's upstanding citizens discovered to have been sexually involved with children or adolescents. The attention that the popular media give this topic is paralleled by the attention that it receives in the social sciences, where literally dozens of books and more than a thousand articles have been published on it in the past few years. In fact, "child sexual abuse," along with "co-dependency" and "dysfunctional family," have become the avant-garde psychological cliches of the decade. However, most of the lay and professional literature, although voluminous, reflect a narrow anthropo-, ethno-, and chronocentrism that precludes any real understanding of the topic with anything more than the preconceptions of our times.
