Book excerpt: Excerpt from Aspects of Religious Belief and Practice in Babylonia and Assyria My profound thanks are due to my esteemed friend Prof. C. H. Toy for the careful revision that he has given to my manuscript, in the course of which he made a large number of valuable suggestions, bearing both on the matter and on the form of presentation, while that dearest and rarest of men, who has been my guide, philosopher, and friend during my career, and who has permitted me to grace this volume by inscribing his name on the dedication page, has added to the heavy debt that I already owe him - a debt too large for me to even pay the interest thereof - by submitting the manuscript to a final and critical examination. How much this has meant, those who know Dr. Fumees need not be told. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Religions of the Ancient World

Download or read book The Religions of the Ancient World written by George Rawlinson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religions of the Ancient World: Including Egypt, Assyria and Babylonia, Persia, India, Phœnicia, Etruria, Greece, Rome This little work has originated in a series of papers written for the Sunday at Home in the years 1879 and 1881, based upon Lectures delivered in the University of Oxford, from the chair which I have the honour to hold. During the twenty-one years that I have occupied that chair, I have continually felt more and more that the real history of nations is bound up with the history of their religions, and that, unless these are carefully studied and accurately known, the inner life of nations is not apprehended, nor is their history understood. I have also felt that the desire to generalize upon the subject of ancient religions, and to build up a formal "Science of Religion," as it is called, has outrun the necessarily anterior collection of materials on which generalization might be safely based. I have, therefore, in my lectures to students, made a point of drawing their attention, from time to time, to the religious beliefs and practices of the various races and nations with whom my historical teaching has been concerned, and of exhibiting to them, as we was I was able, at once the external features and the internal characteristics of "The Religions of the Ancient World." Book Religious and Moral Ideas in Babylonia and Assyria Classic Reprint

Download or read book Religious and Moral Ideas in Babylonia and Assyria Classic Reprint written by Samuel A. B. Mercer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-04 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religious and Moral Ideas in Babylonia and Assyria The names of mighty Babylon and proud Assyria will never be forgotten, and their memory will never cease among men. So long as modern civilization lasts; so long as Christianity sways men's hearts; and so long as the Bible is read, Babylonia and Assyria, Nineveh and Babylon will be names to conjure with. The excavations begun in the mounds of the Tigris Euphrates valley not more than a century ago have revealed many things about these ancient peoples. Much more remains. To be done. There are still many problems to be solved, many gaps to be filled, and many phenomena to be interpreted. This little book, by a student and lover of these ancient peoples, can give only a glimpse of one of the most fascinating problems of Semitic culture. The religious and moral ideas in Babylonia and Assyria, not only because of their close and unique relation to the Old Testament, and through it to the New Testa ment and to Christianity, but also because of them selves, are second to none in human interest. Book The Oath in Babylonian And Assyrian Literature Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Oath in Babylonian And Assyrian Literature Classic Reprint written by Samuel Alfred B. Mercer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-09 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Oath in Babylonian And Assyrian Literature Babylonian and Assyrian literature abounds in religious material. It does so because religion was a vital part of the very existence of those people, whose gods were unquestioned realities. The natural method, therefore, of giving assurance to the truth of a statement was to refer the matter to the gods, calling upon them to hear witness to its truth. The gods were so inseparably a part of their life that such appeals occured very frequently. Thus, Babylonian and Assyrian literature is full of oaths. Again, if an oath was false taken, or when taken sinned against, the holiness of the gods was blasphemed and their anger kindled. The displeasure of the gods was na turally a curse, as the Babylonian and Assyrian depended upon his god at every step, without whose assistance every effort failed, and the sinner was defenceless against the attacks of evil spirits. But in the condition of being cursed the sinner was not hopelessly lost. Gods still existed and them he could supplicate, and they were ever ready and willing to help. What was then desired was reunion by pardon with the god, and the return to favour was in itself a benediction. So we can see how closely these three elements of Babylonian and As syrian religion, oath, curse, and benediction, were knit together and interrelated.
