Book Aspects of Modern Oxford Classic Reprint

Download or read book Aspects of Modern Oxford Classic Reprint written by A. Mere Don and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-26 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Aspects of Modern Oxford Critics may ask why a book published sixteen years ago is reprinted without addi tion as 'aspects of mocjem Oxford.' Many things, they will say, have happened since then: there is a new golf course, and no one now plays ringoal. And why does he not say something about Ruskin College or University Reform I have two defences, and the critic may take whichever he likes. I might say that assorted impressions drawn from periods so diverse as the nineteenth century (now recognised as mistaken) and the twentieth (generally acknowledged to be right) would be too miscellaneous to appear within the same covers. Or, again, I could plead that what was true in 1893 is still true in 1909, because Oxford only appears to alter, and in reality remains very much the same: 'plus cela change, plus c'est la meme chose.' Book excerpt: Aspects Of Modern Oxford: By A Mere Don (A. D. Godley) This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

Book Oxford in the Eighteenth Century Classic Reprint

Download or read book Oxford in the Eighteenth Century Classic Reprint written by A. D. Godley and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oxford in the Eighteenth Century My object in making this book has been to convey some idea of the conditions of academic life at Oxford in the eighteenth century. It seemed to me that the best way to do this was to make a "subject catalogue" of the various aspects of University life, and give each its separate chapter or so. This is not an entirely satisfactory method: but I do not know any that is better, - unless one could write a good historical novel. Certainly biographies, even of the most eminent Vice-Chancellors and Proctors, or a chronological narrative of events, would be even duller than the present volume. However, I have added a sort of "Who's Who" of Heads of Colleges, which may be convenient. During the eighteenth century Oxford was governed by "tyrannies" and close oligarchies, so that Heads of Houses made University history as they are not allowed to do by our modern regime of Boards and Committees. Book Oxford Classics

Download or read book Oxford Classics written by and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-12-12 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oxford, the home of lost causes, the epitome of the world of medieval and renaissance learning in Britain, has always fascinated at a variety of levels: social, institutional, cultural. Its rival, Cambridge, was long dominated by mathematics, while Oxford's leading study was Classics. In this pioneering book, 16 leading authorities explore a variety of aspects of Oxford Classics in the last two hundred years: curriculum, teaching and learning, scholarly style, publishing, gender and social exclusion and the impact of German scholarship. Greats (Literae Humaniores) is the most celebrated classical course in the world: here its early days in the mid-19th century and its reform in the late 20th are discussed, in the latter case by those intimately involved with the reforms. An opening chapter sets the scene by comparing Oxford with Cambridge Classics, and several old favourites are revisited, including such familiar Oxford products as Liddell and Scott's "Greek-English Lexicon", the "Oxford Classical Texts", and Zimmern's "Greek Commonwealth". The book as a whole offers a pioneering, wide-ranging survey of Classics in Oxford.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Oxford Movement: Twelve Years The following pages relate to that stage in the Church revival of this century which is familiarly known as the Oxford Movement, or, to use its nickname, the Tractarian Movement. Various side influences and conditions affected it at its beginning and in its course; but the impelling and governing force was, throughout the years with which these pages are concerned, at Oxford. It was naturally and justly asso ciated with Oxford, from which it received some of its most marked characteristics. Oxford men started it and guided it. At Oxford were raised its first hopes, and Oxford was the scene of its first suc cesses. At Oxford were its deep disappointments, and its apparently fatal defeat. And it won and lost, as a champion of English theology and religion, a man of genius, whose name is among the illustrious names of his age, a name which will always be connected with modern Oxford, and is likely to be long remembered wherever the English language is studied. Brothers' rare concord do ye imitate, Each greeting each with mutual injuries? Brothers fall out and quarrell, I confesse, But sisters love; for it becomes you lesse. Why strive ye sisters for antiquity? Cannot your present honour you suffice? Why strive ye sisters for that vanity, Which if ye saw as 'twas, you would despise? You must make love; love is your surest hold; Others must honour you and make you olde. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book A Book of Cambridge Verse Classic Reprint written by Ernest Edward Kellett and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2016-11-23 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Book The Oxford Book of Modern Women s Stories

Download or read book The Oxford Book of Modern Women s Stories written by Patricia Craig and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The inadequate acknowledgement of women short story writers in standard anthologies is a cause for wonder or affront. How else, indeed, can you view it, given the riches overlooked?" So states editor Patricia Craig in her introduction to The Oxford Book of Modern Women's Stories, a rich, wide-ranging collection that, at last, redresses this historical imbalance by bringing together forty examples of the very best women's stories--from established authors such as Edith Wharton, Virginia Woolf, Eudora Welty, and Katherine Mansfield, to such modern masters as Margaret Atwood, Alice Munro, Bharati Mukherjee, and Amy Tan. Here readers will find humor, passion, eccentricity, forcefulness, elan, intellectual vigor, subversion--indeed every shading of tone and mood, from ironic detachment to full-blooded engagement. Each writer has her own, perfectly realized angle of vision, whether it's the zestfulness of Angela Carter, the breathtaking evocations of Willa Cather, the quirkiness of Grace Paley, or the pungency of Flannery O'Connor. Breaking with tradition, editor Patricia Craig offers few stories about traditional "women's" topics. Instead, the entries in this collection range from an unforgettable tale of racism in South Africa to explorations of adultery, immigration, the importance of cultural identity, and the rootlessness of American cities. Craig also includes some provocative offerings from outside the mainstream of twentieth century fiction--a ghost story by Edith Wharton, a delightful fairy tale, and several engaging historical pieces. Eloquent and captivating, The Oxford Book of Modern Women's Stories offers a dazzling assortment of classic stories and overlooked gems that will amuse, intrigue, and challenge every lover of fine fiction.
