It was the cause of low productivity, poverty, and economic backwardness, while it also stunted literacy, limited political participation and undermined the army. In this book Frank Snowden recounts how Italy became the world centre for the development of malariology as a medical discipline and launched the first national campaign to eradicate the disease. Snowden traces the early advances, the setbacks of world wars and Fascist dictatorship and the final victory against malaria after World War II. He shows how the medical and teaching professions helped educate people in their own self-defence and in the process expanded trade unionism, women's consciousness and civil liberties. He also discusses the antimalarial effort under Mussolini's regime and reveals the shocking details of the German army's intentional release of malaria among Italian civilians - the first and only known example of bioterror in twentieth-century Europe. This first volume of Kellis Papyri contains 90 texts from Area A of the site at Ismet el-Kharab, found over several seasons of excavation since 1986 by the Dakhleh Oasis Project. Over that period, several thousands of papyrus fragments, ostraka and wooden boards inscribed with Greek or Coptic, and occasionally Syriac and Latin texts, were discovered. This volume contains the most coherent of those Greek texts, with photographic reproductions of each papyrii. Together they offer a broad range of glimpses into the daily life of people living in Kellis in the fourth century AD, and are especially interesting, as until quite recently hardly any documents from or about the Dakhleh Oasis had been published. Also included are a number of indices referring to the mention in the texts of emperors and consuls, personal and geographical names, professions and trades, religion and magic, and other significant words or terms.

Doch er beließ es bei einer Auswahl von 26 Papyri, die er als „Papyrusurkunden der Öffentlichen Bibliothek der Universität zu Basel" während des 1. Weltkriegs im Jahre 1917 publizierte. Dieser Band bietet nun eine Reedition der bereits bekannten Stücke und eine Erstedition aller weiteren Basler Papyri.

The archives provide a wealth of data in terms of legal and economic status as well as position in the community. Three women receive particular attention in this study: the wealthy Judean Mipṭaḥiah, the Egyptian slave Tamut, and Yehoyismaʿ, Tamut’s manumitted daughter.
