Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first section of this volume, we have attempted to bring together some of the papers that reflect exciting new areas of development in relation to neuroendocrine investigation. Very recently, specific nucleotide recognition sequences for thyroid hormones, steroid hormones and the fundamental intracellular regulator, cyclic AMP, have been determined. In this section, the preliminary characterization and investigation of the nuclear binding proteins that mediate the actions of cAMP are described. Not only does this represent an important advance in cell biology, but it may represent a further level of alteration in control in normal and disease states. Intercellular pituitary "cross talk" is well described in the in vitro setting. The active molecules are clearly It is now important able to exert significant actions at the subnanomolar level. to design experiments in order to define the precise physiological relevance of these novel and potentially important observations. Paracrine and autocrine cellular interactions are of established importance in growth control in a variety of body tissues. But it is only very recently that the investigation of normal and abnormal anterior pituitary growth has reached the forefront of neuroendocrine research. This is perhaps surprising, beause the inhibitory effects of doapmine agonism on lactotroph growth and differentiation have been appreciated for some time. The anterior pituitary gland produces numerous growth factors that exert a variety of functional effects on pituitary hormone synthesis and release.

Offering valuable tips, it serves as a guide for young trainee endocrinologists facing their first cases of pituitary adenomas. It also includes illustrative clinical cases of acromegaly, prolactinomas, Cushing’s disease, and TSHomas. In addition, a Questions & Answers section is available online. The mix of fresh enthusiasm and well-established expertise in the field provided by the editors and the committee they belong to make the book both solid and innovative, with an appropriate balance between the traditional knowledge and the most exciting innovations from recent or ongoing research. Book Hormonally Active Brain Peptides

Download or read book Hormonally Active Brain Peptides written by Kenneth W. McKerns and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Near the end of September 1980, the contributors to Hormonally Active Brain Pep tides: Structure and Function met to discuss their chapters for the monograph. This meeting was the eighth sponsored by the International Foundation for Biochemical Endocrinology and was held at the Hotel Plakir in Dubrovnik, Yugoslavia. Several months were allowed after the meeting for the contributors to revise their manuscripts and for editing. Professor Dr. Vladimir Pantie and the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts were in charge of the local arrangements and social activities. The Foundation is grateful for the splendid job that was done and for the out standing scientific, cultural, and social activities. I thank the Serbian Acad emy of Sciences and Arts and the Yugoslav Council of Academies for spon soring my stay in Yugoslavia. I greatly enjoyed giving lectures, visiting laboratories, and discussing research projects in a number of centers in Yugoslavia. A diverse group of topics was presented in Dubrovnik concerning cer tain brain peptides. The topics included "Structure, Function, and Confor mation of Neuropeptides," "Distribution of Peptides in the Brain," "Reg ulation of the Release of Peptide Hormones," "The Active Center of Gonadotropins," "In Vitro Synthesis of Hypothalamic Hormones," "Stud ies on Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone," "Studies on the Biosynthesis, Release, and Degradation of LH-RH," "Genesis and Properties of Pitu itary ACTH, Prolactin, and Growth Hormone Producing Cells," "Precur sors to Oligopeptide Hormones," and "Stress Effects on Peptide Hormone Synthesis
