Book Aspects of a High Intensity Neutron Source

Download or read book Aspects of a High Intensity Neutron Source written by Peter Henry Chapman and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique methodology for creating a neutron source model was developed for deuterons and protons incident on solid phase beryllium and lithium targets. This model was then validated against experimental results already available in literature. The model was found to adequately characterize the deuteron reactions, subject to the end user's desired tolerances, but only marginally so for the proton reactions. A nonstandard, yet practical, application of such a neutron source model was demonstrated by conducting activation analysis for materials reasonably likely to be components in an accelerator based neutron source. This analysis consisted of inducing activation by exposure in the MITR-II 5 MW research reactor, and then adjusting the results based on the model's calculated neutron response. The analysis thus illustrated the utility of the source model in characterizing the system, enabling component design and evaluation before fabrication.

Book Neutron Generators for Analytical Purposes

Download or read book Neutron Generators for Analytical Purposes written by International Atomic Energy Agency and published by IAEA Radiation Technology Repo. This book was released on 2012 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication addresses recent developments in neutron generator (NG) technology. It presents information on compact instruments with high neutron yield to be used for neutron activation analysis (NAA) and prompt gamma neutron activation analysis in combination with high count rate spectrometers. Traditional NGs have been shown to be effective for applications including borehole logging, homeland security, nuclear medicine and the on-line analysis of aluminium, coal and cement. Pulsed fast thermal neutron analysis, as well as tagged and timed neutron analysis, are additional techniques which can be applied using NG. Furthermore, NG can effectively be used for elemental analysis and is also effective for analysis of hidden materials by neutron radiography. Useful guidelines for developing NG based research laboratories are also provided in this publication.

Book Feasibility Study

Download or read book Feasibility Study written by T. G. Provenzano and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design and fabrication of a high-intensity, 14-Mev neutron source which can be operated on a hoist platform on the 1500-ft BREN tower at the Nevada Test Site (NTS) has been determined to be feasible. Utilizing the T(d, n)-4He reaction, the source should be capable of producing, as a minimum, an average intensity of 10-13 neutrons/sec for periods up to 4 hr. The type and placement of power supplies, ion sources, targets, and vacuum equipment have been examined and a preliminary conceptual design completed. Control systems, testing procedures, and construction operations were studied and are presented. It is estimated that the neutron source will cost from 260,000 to 300,000, occupy approximately 400 ft-3, weigh approximately 7.5 tons and require about 10 months to complete.

Book The Physics and Shielding Aspects of Heterogeneous Isotopic Neutron Sources

Download or read book The Physics and Shielding Aspects of Heterogeneous Isotopic Neutron Sources written by Donald Frank Knuth and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is concerned with the feasibility of constructing an isotopic neutron source which has the characteristic that it can be turned on or off at the option of the user. The alpha-neutron reaction was selected to be the source of neutrons. It was desired that a suitable combination of radioisotope material and target material be selected which exhibited a high neutron yield when the two materials were placed into the on mode, and yet exhibited low radiation intensities when the source was in the off mode. This way, a compace source of high intensity would be possible which would require little or no shielding when not in use. Source half-life, material availability and cost were considered. It was concluded that two radioactive materials, polonium-210 and plutonium-238, appeared to be the most attractive radioisotope materials. For a mechanical on-off system, beryllium was considered to be the best target material since it exhibits the highest yield in an alpha-neutron reaction. Typical neutron energy spectra and neutron yeilds were calculated which showed that the ratio of neutrons emitted while in the on mode compared to the off mode was on the order of 10,000. Calculations were made of neutron and gamma ray intensities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compendium presents some of the major applications of neutron scattering techniques to problems in biology. It is a record of the papers presented at the Neutrons in Biology Conference, the third in an occasional series held to highlight progress in the field and to provide a focus for future direction. The strength ofthe neutron scattering technique remains principally in the manipula tion of scattering density through hydrogen and deuterium atoms. The development ofad vanced detectors, innovative instrument and beamline components, and sophisticated data acquisition systems through the 1970s and early 1980s provided a sound foundation for the technique. With continued development, some of the exotic and expensive equipment has become affordable by the medium-sized facilities, thereby broadening the user base considerably. Despite problems with the major neutron sources in the late 1980s and early 1990s, some spectacular results have been achieved. Whilst the high and medium flux beam reac tors will continue to make a major impact in the field, the results from the first experi ments, and the planned developments on spallation neutron sources, clearly indicate that the technique has enormous potential.
