Book Development and Quantification of Sustainability Indicators

Download or read book Development and Quantification of Sustainability Indicators written by Subramanian Senthilkannan Muthu and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-09-12 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights various methods for quantifying sustainability indicators using different indices. To date, numerous sustainability indicators encompassing either all three pillars (economic, environmental and social) or individual or joint indicators (e.g. environmental and social) have been developed and quantified. In addition to commonly developed indicators, which can be utilized for any industrial sector, sector-specific sustainability indicators are frequently used. Behind each indicator developed, there is a unique scientific model, method or assessment technique. This book explores and elaborates on such indicators, and on associated details such as the concept, development methodology, assessment technique, and applications of each indicator.

Book Participation Du Public Au D veloppement Des Ressources Apr s L approbation Des Projets

Download or read book Participation Du Public Au D veloppement Des Ressources Apr s L approbation Des Projets written by Maureen Bush and published by [Hull, Quebec] : Canadian Environmental Assessment Research Council. This book was released on 1990 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this study was to determine if post-approval public participation is useful, and if so, in what situations. Eight resource development projects were examined for which some form of public participation was attempted after project approval. This study concludes that post-approval public participation can be useful to proponents, governments, and publics as part of the overall impact management process and an extension of earlier involvement.

Book Soils as a Key Component of the Critical Zone 1

Download or read book Soils as a Key Component of the Critical Zone 1 written by Jacques Berthelin and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2018-10-16 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This introductory book to the six volume series includes an introduction defining the critical zone for mankind that extends from tree canopy and the lower atmosphere to water table and unweathered rock. Soils play a crucial role through the functions and the services that they provide to mankind. The spatial and temporal variability of soils is represented by information systems whose importance, recent evolutions and increasingly performing applications in France and in the world must be underlined. The soil functions, discussed in this book, focus on the regulation of the water cycle, biophysicochemical cycles and the habitat role of biodiversity. The main services presented are those related to the provision of agricultural, fodder and forest products, energy, as well as materials and the role of soil as infrastructure support. They also include the different cultural dimensions of soils, their representations being often linked to myths and rites, as well as their values of environmental and archaeological records. Finally, the issue is raised of an off-ground world.

Book Decommissioning of U S Uranium Production Facilities

Download or read book Decommissioning of U S Uranium Production Facilities written by United States. Office of Coal, Nuclear, Electric, and Alternate Fuels and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 1980 to 1993, the domestic production of uranium declined from almost 44 million pounds U3O8 to about 3 million pounds. This retrenchment of the U.S. uranium industry resulted in the permanent closing of many uranium-producing facilities. Current low uranium prices, excess world supply, and low expectations for future uranium demand indicate that it is unlikely existing plants will be reopened. Because of this situation, these facilities eventually will have to be decommissioned. The Uranium Mill Tailings and Radiation Control Act of 1978 (UMTRCA) vests the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) with overall responsibility for establishing environmental standards for decommissioning of uranium production facilities. UMTRCA also gave the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) the responsibility for licensing and regulating uranium production and related activities, including decommissioning. Because there are many issues associated with decommissioning-environmental, political, and financial-this report will concentrate on the answers to three questions: (1) What is required? (2) How is the process implemented? (3) What are the costs? Regulatory control is exercised principally through the NRC licensing process. Before receiving a license to construct and operate an uranium producing facility, the applicant is required to present a decommissioning plan to the NRC. Once the plan is approved, the licensee must post a surety to guarantee that funds will be available to execute the plan and reclaim the site. This report by the Energy Information Administration (EIA) represents the most comprehensive study on this topic by analyzing data on 33 (out of 43) uranium production facilities located in Colorado, Nebraska, New Mexico, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, and Washington.
