Is ons archeologisch erfgoed dan onbelangrijk? Zeker niet! Gelegen in het hart van Europa, is Vlaanderen sinds enkele tienduizenden jaren steeds opnieuw een intens bewoond gebied geweest, een kruispunt waar culturen en machten elkaar hebben ontmoet, beïnvloed en bekampt. Die tienduizenden jaren van bewoning hebben op ontelbare plaatsen materiële getuigen in de bodem achtergelaten, materiële getuigen die samen het bodemarchief vormen. Alhoewel dit archeologisch erfgoed dikwijls wel minder spectaculair of monumentaal lijkt dan bijvoorbeeld in mediterrane streken, is het toch zeer rijk en gevarieerd, en dus zeker niet minder belangrijk dan wat onze buurlanden hebben.Hoe valt het dan te verklaren dat ons archeologisch patrimonium zo weinig gekend is? Ongetwijfeld speelt de taal hierbij een rol. Onze publicaties zijn voor buitenlandse collega's vaak minder toegankelijk. Maar ook in eigen land bleef de rijkdom van ons bodemarchief zeer lang onderschat en zelfs miskend. Men ging er immers van uit dat Vlaanderen in het verre verleden tijdens verschillende periodes helemaal niet of nauwelijks bewoond was, zodat er niet veel te zoeken viel, of toch niets interessants. Heel wat periodes zijn dan ook nog zeer slecht gekend of blijken pas nu hun waardevolle informatie vrij te geven. De recente ontdekking van honderden grafheuvels uit de bronstijd in Oost- en West-Vlaanderen vormt daarvan een treffend voorbeeld, terwijl het nauwelijks enkele jaren voorheen - eerst in de Kempen, dan in zandig Vlaanderen - duidelijk werd dat ook Noord-België tijdens de Romeinse tijd intens bewoond was. Ook de rijkdom en het belang van ons middeleeuws en jonger archeologisch erfgoed kregen pas sinds relatief korte tijd meer aandacht.Kan het ons dan nog verwonderen dat het archeologische verleden voor de eigen bevolking grotendeels een onbekende bleef en de groeiende publieke belangstelling voor de archeologie in eigen land slechts een vrij recent verschijnsel is? Vandaar dat ook de beoefening van de archeologie - zeker van de archeologie als wetenschap - in Vlaanderen eigenlijk nog geen duidelijk statuut verworven heeft. Velen zien archeologen nog eerder als zonderlingen en beschouwen archeologie nog steeds meer als een tijdverdrijf dan als een volwaardige wetenschap met strikte methoden en technieken. De algemene miskenning van de waarde van ons archeologisch patrimonium is bovendien tegelijkertijd oorzaak en gevolg van een totaal gebrek aan belangstelling vanwege de overheid. Zij moest de verantwoordelijkheid voor het beheer, de bescherming en het onderzoek van dat patrimonium op zich nemen, maar heeft dit in feite pas op zeer recente datum gedaan. Het lange uitblijven - tot 1993, tientallen jaren later dan in de buurlanden - van enige decreet- en regelgeving ter ondersteuning van een coherent beleid inzake archeologische monumentenzorg, heeft in grote mate de ontwikkeling van de professionele archeologiebeoefening gehypothekeerd en is er derhalve mede oorzaak van dat het archeologisch onderzoek een zeer grote achterstand heeft opgelopen, zeker op kwantitatief vlak, maar ook inhoudelijk. De stijging van deze achterstand is nu wel sterk afgeremd, maar van een reële inhaalbeweging kan nog niet worden gewaagd.
