Book Experimental Study of Fatigue Crack Propagation and Retardation Using Polymethylmethacrylate

Download or read book Experimental Study of Fatigue Crack Propagation and Retardation Using Polymethylmethacrylate written by Francis J. Pitoniak and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue cracks were grown in compact tension specimens of polymethylmethacrylate, a transparent polymer which was used as a model for metals. Various peak overloads applied to the constant DeltaK baselines used produced changes in the baseline load crack growth rates. A study of the monochromatic light interference fringe patterns emanating from the fatigue cracks at zero load indicated that the crack surface were closed along the saw cut edge and on the free surface of the specimens. The crack surfaces were displaced in the interior of the specimen at zero load. Measurement of the crack opening displacements from the fringe patterns indicated that the crack surfaces opened on the free surface at approximately half the baseline load level for a stress ratio of approximately zero. This is in agreement with the Elber crack closure concept.

Book Stability Theory of Elastic Rods

Download or read book Stability Theory of Elastic Rods written by Teodor M. Atanackovic and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1997 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book treats stability problems of equilibrium states of elastic rods. Euler energy and dynamical methods of stability analysis are introduced and stability criteria for each method is developed. Stability analysis is accompanied by a number of classical conservative and non-conservative, two- and three-dimensional problems. Some problems are treated by all three methods. Many generalized versions of known problems are presented (heavy vertical rod, rotating rod, Greenhill's problem, Beck's column, Pflger's rod, strongest column, etc.). The generalizations consist in using either a generalized form of constitutive equations or a more general form of loading, or both. Special attention is paid to the influence of shear stresses and axis compressibility on the value of the critical load. Variational methods are applied to obtain estimates of the critical load and maximal deflection in the post-critical state, in a selected number of examples.

Book Mechanical Vibration and Shock Analysis Sinusoidal Vibration

Download or read book Mechanical Vibration and Shock Analysis Sinusoidal Vibration written by Christian Lalanne and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2010-01-05 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mechanical Vibration and Shock Analysis, Second Edition Volume 1: Sinusoidal Vibration The relative and absolute response of a mechanical system with a single degree of freedom is considered for arbitrary excitation, and its transfer function defined in various forms. The characteristics of sinusoidal vibration are examined in the context both of the real world and of laboratory tests, and for both transient and steady state response of the single-degree-of-freedom system. Viscous damping and then nonlinear damping are considered. The various types of swept sine perturbations and their properties are described and, for the one-degree-of-freedom system, the consequence of an inappropriate choice of sweep rate are considered. From the latter, rules governing the choice of suitable sweep rates are developed. The Mechanical Vibration and Shock Analysis five-volume series has been written with both the professional engineer and the academic in mind. Christian Lalanne explores every aspect of vibration and shock, two fundamental and extremely significant areas of mechanical engineering, from both a theoretical and practical point of view. The five volumes cover all the necessary issues in this area of mechanical engineering. The theoretical analyses are placed in the context of both the real world and the laboratory, which is essential for the development of specifications.

Book Dynamic Response Analysis of Complex Mechanisms with Multiple Inputs

Download or read book Dynamic Response Analysis of Complex Mechanisms with Multiple Inputs written by Charles Edward Benedict and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The holonomic constraints associated with complex, multiple input linkage systems complicate the procedures and methods used in determining their dynamic response. Large systems of nonlinear, second-order differential equations, requiring additional algebraic equations of constraint, occur as a result of these constraints. Double iteration algorithms, which are both time-consuming and subject to error, are necessary to integrate numerically these differential equations of motion. In this dissertation the concepts of kinematic influence coefficients of complex, planar, rigid link mechanisms with multiple inputs are developed and utilized to eliminate the holonomic constraints associated with such systems. Kinematic influence coefficients associated with series and parallel linkage combinations are developed, based on the addition of Assur groups (dyads, tetrads and more complex groups) to the basic system group. These complex, multiple input linkage systems are then reduced to coupled equivalent mass systems acted upon by variable rate springs, variable coefficient viscous dampers, and equivalent external forces and torques. The holonomic constraints associated with the original system are eliminated, thus leaving the equivalent mass system free of all such constraints. The number of generalized coordinates required to describe the motion of the equivalent system now equals the number of independent system inputs. The differential equations of motion describing the system's dynamical behavior can then be determined by established methods and put in a suitable form for numerical integration.
