Gender and visual culture traverse in quite unique and often fascinating ways. On the one hand, gender functions as an interdisciplinary approach and critical tool to analyse and investigate several subject fields. As such, gender contributes to establishing a much-needed theoretical and functional platform spanning across many fields of enquiry from where gender practices can effectively be critiqued and ideally changed. On the other hand, the growing popularity and ubiquity of visual culture in a global context create the increasing need to reflect on and interrogate this phenomenon in an academic manner. Although Visual Culture Studies is an established subject at many Northern institutions, it is fairly new and relatively under-theorised in the South. In response to the growing need to investigate issues dealing with gender and visual culture and particularly how they creatively intersect, this selection of chapters (first presented as papers at the Taking a Hard Look: Gender and Visual Culture international conference, 20-21 June 2007, Institute for Gender and Women’s Studies, University of Pretoria, South Africa) are collected here in the hope to make a purposeful contribution to the burgeoning discourse. However, by addressing the creative intersection between gender and visual culture this edited volume is no novelty. In fact, the topic of gender and visual culture has been addressed over the past decade in several edited volumes. It is in this proud tradition that this book aims to take its place and to create a dialogue with international theory on gender and visual culture studies from a South perspective. Key questions that are explored in the volume: What type of gendered visual culture is being presented and created in the South particularly (but not exclusively)? How is visual culture gendered? Can one refer to a move beyond gender in terms of a trans-gendered visual culture or are we still caught up in the same debilitating role models? How does one address the ever-increasing alienation between gender studies and the younger generation of students and scholars moving into higher education? What is the role of gender as interdisciplinary tool in the academic analysis of visual culture as it spans across several subjects, such as science, social work, technology, psychology, medicine, philosophy, sociology, engineering, communication, economics, religious studies, business management, anthropology, geography, historical studies, cultural and media studies, visual studies, art history and literature studies?

Book excerpt: This thesis came from my interest in how popular culture informs gender identity in young children. As a result of gender stereotypes, children may learn to see themselves in limited roles. I wanted to discover what would happen when young children were invited to question the stereotypes tied to gender. My research involved 24 Kindergarten students, 46% female and 54% male. My research took place at an urban elementary arts magnet school in the North Side of Chicago over the course of 7 weeks. My methodology was action research. My research questions included: How do students use the process of making a short, collaborative animated movie to explore their ideas about gender? How does development play a role in teaching Kindergarten students about gender? How will students' and the teacher's understandings of gendered communication change through this process? I tried to set up prompts without an anticipated outcome. I allowed students to drive the research. They supplied ideas about gender, and reactions when their preconceived notions of gender were challenged. My data consists of documentation and analysis of students' individual artworks, the collaborative movie, and video footage of all 7 weeks of research. Through the course of my research, I discovered that students could begin to see gender as fluid, rather than just a set of strict behaviors and preferences held separately by each gender. Periodically these strict gender lines were evident in the observations and inferences students made during class discussions: "Girls wear lipstick" and "Boys wear bowties." But, when gender binaries were challenged by reading, Morris Micklewhite and the Tangerine Dress, students started to create a more fluid understanding of gender. However, in later discussions, students also resorted back to a more binary mode of thinking. I also deepened my understanding how popular culture and mass media inform students' understandings of gender. Students often referenced pop culture as it related to gender, and they associated external things with gender, rather than intrinsic characteristics. In my thesis research, I learned about how pop culture influences students' understandings of gender and how they define themselves. This was seen through students' self-portrait puppets and the plot of their movie. Additionally, gendered images in media were both sacred to students and disdained. I also discovered that teaching about gender was cyclical. A fluid space must be recreated with each lesson. Additionally, students learned to challenge gender binaries while simultaneously utilizing them. When developing a critical curriculum about gender stereotypes, the teacher needs to be careful about using gendered language to avoid confusing students. Recommendations to the field are to further research child friendly ways to speak about gender in a critical way.
