Book excerpt: Charged with comic energy and a steely disregard for any pieties whatsoever, Barney's Version is a major Richler novel, the most personal and feeling book of a long and distinguished career. Told in the first person, it gives us the life (and what a life!) of Barney Panofsky--whose trashy TV company, Totally Useless Productions, has made him a small fortune; whose three wives include a martyred feminist icon, a quintessential JCP (Jewish-Canadian Princess), and the incomparable Miriam, the perfect wife, lover, and mother--alas, now married to another man; who recalls with nostalgia and pain his young manhood in the Paris of the early fifties, and his lifelong passion for wine, women, and the Montreal Canadiens; who either did or didn't murder his best friend, Boogie, after discovering him in bed with The Second Mrs. Panofsky; whose satirical eye for the idiocies of today's Quebec separatists (as well as for every other kind of political correctness) manages to offend his entire acquaintanceship (and will soon be offending readers everywhere); and whose memory--though not his bile--is, in his sixty-seventh year, definitely slipping . . .

Book Walking with Legends

    Book Details:
  • Author : Mick Burns
  • Publisher : LSU Press
  • Release : 2007-10-01
  • ISBN : 0807147915
  • Pages : 224 pages

Download or read book Walking with Legends written by Mick Burns and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2007-10-01 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drummer, record producer, bandleader, jazz researcher, and cigar-chomping raconteur Barry Martyn is a New Orleans original who happens to have been born in England. Implausible though this may seem, it makes perfect sense to members of the New Orleans traditional jazz community, who view themselves as an extended family based on merit as much as nativity. For more than forty years, Martyn has been a fixture in the Crescent City's jazz scene, laying down the beat for generations of celebrated musicians and avidly promoting the city's unique musical heritage around the world. In Walking with Legends -- based on over forty hours of interviews with Martyn by fellow British jazz enthusiast and author Mick Burns -- Martyn reflects upon his life in jazz and offers a window into a musical world that few have understood, let alone witnessed from the inside. At the age of nineteen, jazz fanatic Martyn found his way to the Crescent City and began working as a professional drummer in clubs and studios. The first white man in the United States to join a black musician's union, he eventually started his own record label and recorded hundreds of jam sessions that today are regarded as classics in Europe. In 1972, he formed the Legends of Jazz, an old-style New Orleans jazz band that toured the world and took New Orleans jazz into the American showbiz mainstream. Martyn's life story provides unique intimate glimpses of a vanished generation of New Orleans musicians, including Louis Armstrong, Kid Sheik Cola, Harold Dejan, Joe Watkins, Albert Nicholas, Kid Thomas, Andrew Blakeney, and many others. Throughout his chronicle, Martyn highlights the continual clash of cultures that arose from an avid British pupil learning lessons of life and music from elderly African American strangers who take him under their wing both out of curiosity and self-interest. Together, they find a way to connect through music, even if the road gets a little bumpy at times. A standard-bearer for New Orleans's jazz drumming tradition, Martyn remains one of the city's busiest musicians and most avid promoters of New Orleans music. In Walking with Legends, he honors the legacies of the African American musicians who taught and inspired him and affirms the importance of the human relationships that make the music possible.

Book The Squirrel That Saved Annie

Download or read book The Squirrel That Saved Annie written by Jack Stevenson and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-09-30 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1. One day while driving a farm tractor cultivating in a field close to [what is called] the Smokey River Valley in southern Logan county of mid-western Kansas it was there that I came upon the biggest surprise of my life. The tractor or farm land or equipment did not belong to me. I was a fill in Operator my son Todd when he needed me, because I had 50 years experience in farming. The Land Lord was my sons father in law. They both knew I always enjoyed running a tractor or a combine ever since my dad thought me when I was just a kid. I was born in 1930s called the Dust Bowl Years and also called the Great Depression This piece of farm land I had never farmed before. It was my first time i had even seen the piece of land that close. It was the last peace of cultivated farm land next to the River and valley, about 300 feet below. So it was a new adventure for me. The view, and scenery, of the [Smokey River valley) was very fantastic that early spring day. Just to look at the river valley with trees of all shapes and sizes, cattle grazing the grass land approaching three-hundred feet below the ground I was to farm. I could see a long view both up and down the valley which gave me more pleasure. The first round around the field in the tractor, you had to be sure to stay within the legal bounders and not to hit the fence post with the implement the tractor was pulling to cultivate the ground, or you would have some major problems. The second time around the field my eyes where more free to notice my surroundings and able to observe the scenery I had never seen. What a pleasure it was to see. While going the second time around the field I noticed the sweeps of the implement was bringing up odd looking pieces of rock to the surface in a small given area, and the third round at the same location I had seen a few sparkles of sun glitters glittering off of small objects where the small rocks were laying. At this point I decided to stop the tractor and investigate. I guess I did this because when I was a young boy, I always did like to explore things and the countryside. Crawling down off the tractor I began to walk around looking at some the different shaped rocks and pieces of broken glass which helped me decide why I was seeing sparkles from the sun rays. Thats when I began to realize there used to be a old rock house or an early day homestead, or old early day School House, located there. It was normal during the early days of homesteaders to use chock rocks to build their homes because it was easy to find along the Smoky Hill River. They could cut and shape the size of the rock they needed. Also in the early Homestead Days, their was wagon trail known as the Butterfield Overland Trail which also was used by the cavalry to reach the Forts which protected armed soldiers and civilians from Indians.
