Book India

    Book Details:
  • Author : Aline Dobbie

  • ISBN : 0954848020
  • Pages : 255 pages

Download or read book India written by Aline Dobbie and published by Melrose Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From her infancy the author has been fascinated by that most magnificent and elusive of beasts, the tiger. Her second book on India, [this] is a personal account of her pilgramage to India's great wildlife parks and tiger sanctuaries ... and provides a comprehensive study of Ranthambhore, Bandhavgarh, Kanha and Corbett Tiger Reserves as well as detailed backgrounds to Nagarahole, Kaziranga, Pench, Bharatpur and Gir National Park, home of the rare Asiatic Lion ... In addition, the author highlights the continuing threat to India's tigers and the on-going efforts to protect them ... Dobbie is a Hindi speaker and uses her many contacts and childhood reminiscences to great effect throughout this book. The reader will also find valuable information on some of India's historical gems such as Gwalior, Orchha, Sonagiri, Mandu, Sanchi and Bhimbetka as well as the hill station of Nainital. India: The Tiger's Roar is certainly not a travel guide, nor a guide to the wildlife of India, although it is an excellent source of information on both subjects. Instead it is a heady blend of travelogue and personal insight, cultural and political philosophy, anecdotes, cautionary tales, historical and religious references and a thesis on the state of Indian wildlife conservation.

Book Bengal Tiger and British Lion

Download or read book Bengal Tiger and British Lion written by Richard Stevenson and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2005 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This history of the Bengal Famine of 1943 describes the interplay of politics, economics, sociology and military policy, which caused a famine due to a lack of cash, not a lack of food. The Famine, whose story is almost unknown due to wartime censorship by the British, occurred because of a hyperinflation in the price of rice caused by the provisioning for the major offensive against the Japanese on India's eastern borders. Relief efforts were halfhearted because much of the countryside was in a state of endemic revolt against the British. The logistical problems caused by massive gifts of food by the British and Indian troops to the starving people threatened to stall the forthcoming offensive. The cause of the Famine was the deadly alienation between the Bengalis and their British rulers.

Book Neurobiology of Chemical Communication

Download or read book Neurobiology of Chemical Communication written by Carla Mucignat-Caretta and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2014-02-14 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intraspecific communication involves the activation of chemoreceptors and subsequent activation of different central areas that coordinate the responses of the entire organism—ranging from behavioral modification to modulation of hormones release. Animals emit intraspecific chemical signals, often referred to as pheromones, to advertise their presence to members of the same species and to regulate interactions aimed at establishing and regulating social and reproductive bonds. In the last two decades, scientists have developed a greater understanding of the neural processing of these chemical signals. Neurobiology of Chemical Communication explores the role of the chemical senses in mediating intraspecific communication. Providing an up-to-date outline of the most recent advances in the field, it presents data from laboratory and wild species, ranging from invertebrates to vertebrates, from insects to humans. The book examines the structure, anatomy, electrophysiology, and molecular biology of pheromones. It discusses how chemical signals work on different mammalian and non-mammalian species and includes chapters on insects, Drosophila, honey bees, amphibians, mice, tigers, and cattle. It also explores the controversial topic of human pheromones. An essential reference for students and researchers in the field of pheromones, this is also an ideal resource for those working on behavioral phenotyping of animal models and persons interested in the biology/ecology of wild and domestic species.

    Book Details:
  • Author : Paul A. Rees
  • Publisher : Academic Press
  • Release : 2017-11-27
  • ISBN : 0128096071
  • Pages : 415 pages

Download or read book Examining Ecology written by Paul A. Rees and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining Ecology: Exercises in Environmental Biology and Conservation explains foundational ecological principles using a hands-on approach that features analyzing data, drawing graphs, and undertaking practical exercises that simulate field work. The book provides students and lecturers with real life examples to demonstrate basic principles. The book helps students, instructors, and those new to the field learn about the principles of ecology and conservation by completing a series of problems. Prior knowledge of the subject is not assumed; the work requires users to be able to perform simple calculations and draw graphs. Most of the exercises in the book have been used widely by the author's own students over a number of years, and many are based on real data from published research. Exercises are succinct with a broad number of options, which is a unique feature among similar books on this topic. The book is primarily intended as a resource for students, academics, and instructors studying, teaching, and working in zoology, ecology, biology, wildlife conservation and management, ecophysiology, behavioural ecology, population biology and ecology, environmental biology, or environmental science. Students will be able to progress through the book attempting each exercise in a logical sequence, beginning with basic principles and working up to more complex exercises. Alternatively they may wish to focus on specific chapters on specialist areas, e.g., population dynamics. Many of the exercises introduce students to mathematical methods (calculations, use of formulae, drawing of graphs, calculating simple statistics). Other exercises simulate fieldwork projects, allowing users to 'collect' and analyze data which would take considerable time and effort to collect in the field. - Facilitates learning about the principles of ecology and conservation biology through succinct, yet comprehensive real-life examples, problems, and exercises - Features authoritatively and consistently written foundational content in biodiversity, ecophysiology, behavioral ecology, and more, as well as abundant and diverse cases for applied use - Functions as a means of learning ecological and conservation-related principles by 'doing', e.g., by analyzing data, drawing graphs, and undertaking practical exercises that simulate field work, and more - Features approximately 150 photos and figures created and produced by the author
