Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evolutionary Biology, of which this is the nineteenth volume, continues to offer its readers a wide range of original articles, reviews, and com mentaries on evolution, in the broadest sense of that term. The topics of the reviews range from anthropology and behavior to molecular biology and systematics. In recent volumes, a broad spectrum of articles have appeared on such subjects as natural selection among replicating molecules in vitro, mate recognition and the reproductive behavior in Drosophila, evolution of the monocotyledons, species selection, and the communication net work made possible among even distantly related genera of bacteria by plasmids and other transposable elements. Articles such as these, often too long for standard journals, are the stuff of Evolutionary Biology. The editors continue to solicit manuscripts on an international scale in an effort to see that everyone of the many facets of biological evolution is covered. Manuscripts should be sent to anyone of the following: Max K. Hecht, Department of Biology, Queens College of the City University of New York, Flushing, New York 11367; Bruce Wallace, Department of Biology, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacks burg, Virginia 24061; Ghillian T. Book Vegetation and Production Ecology of an Alaskan Arctic Tundra

Download or read book Vegetation and Production Ecology of an Alaskan Arctic Tundra written by Larry L. Tieszen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 686 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume on botanical research in tundra represents the culmination of four years of intensive and integrated field research centered at Barrow, Alaska. The volume summarizes the most significant results and interpretations of the pri mary producer projects conducted in the U.S. IBP Tundra Biome Program (1970-1974). Original data reports are available from the authors and can serve as detailed references for interested tundra researchers. Also, the results of most projects have been published in numerous papers in various journals. The introduction provides a brief overview of other ecosystem components. The main body presents the results in three general sections. The summary chapter is an attempt to integrate ideas and information from the previous papers as well as extant literature. In addition, this chapter focuses attention on pro cesses of primary production which should receive increased emphasis. Although this book will not answer all immediate questions, it hopefully will enhance future understanding of the tundra, particularly as we have studied it in Northern Alaska.

  • Pages : 456 pages

Download or read book Introduction to Bryology written by W. B. Schofield and published by New York : Macmillan ; London : Collier Macmillan. This book was released on 1985 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This richly illustrated text/reference, originally printed in 1985, provides a comprehensive introduction to the structure, evolution and interrelationships of the bryophytes. Leading bryologist W. B. Schofield gives a broad, international view of bryology that goes beyond a basic understanding of structure to present the bryophytes as a vital group of living plants. After a solid foundation in the morphology of mosses, liverworts and hornworts separate chapters, organized to allow easy comparison of the evolutionary lines, offer definitive information on the biology of the organisms. Topics covered in detail include cytology, genetics, chemistry, ecology, physiology, geography and the history of the discipline. Emphasizing the biologic significance of the bryophytes, the author uses an abundance of elegant original illustrations to show the structure, diversity and the natural beauty of the bryophytes. There is also an extensive glossary of bryologic terminology. W. B. Schofield is Professor Emeritus at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. He is a former president of the American Bryological and Lichenological Society.
