There exists a literature on Asian women in management, recently depicted by a number of studies on the changing face of Asian women managers (Adler, 1993; Benson and Yukongdi, 2005; Budhwar, Saini, and Bhatnagar, 2005; Chou, Posh, and Foster, 2005; Cooke, 2005; Kang and Rowley, 2005; Lee, 2005; Ng and Chakrabarty, 2005; Rowley and Truong, 2009; Yuasa, 2005; Yukongdi, 2005; Yukongdi and Benson, 2005; Yukongdi and Rowley, 2009). However there has been a paucity of research in HE in these studies. The economics and socio-cultures of Asian countries within which HE systems operate are never homogeneous. Yet, as this thesis argues, the available discourses of women in leadership and management, largely grounded in Western countries, have led to deficiencies in the knowledge about the experiences and perspectives of Asian women as leaders and managers (Omar and Davidson, 2001). This culminates in a failure to thoroughly explain the worldwide prevalent problem of women's under-representation in leadership and management positions. This thesis uses Vietnam as a context in order to examine the current literature on Asian women as leaders and managers in HE, and the role of women in modern Vietnamese universities.

The report finds that APA women have demonstrated significant increases in bachelor's, master's, and first-professional degrees over the past decade but continue to lag behind male counterparts. The report also finds that APA women are underrepresented in many fields of study at all degree levels, in doctoral studies, as faculty, and at higher levels of academic administration; that many APA women find an inhospitable campus climate; that they are evaluated differently and lack a sense of community with their colleagues; and that APA professional staff cite invisibility and marginalization. The report notes that the "model minority" stereotype penalizes APA women by assuming they do not need academic or professional guidance and support, and that class and cultural biases reinforce APA women as "outsiders" in academe. In particular, women are underrepresented and Asian women are acutely underrepresented compared to the potential candidate population. At the same time, articles and research highlighting important performance and financial benefits from increasing women in executive teams continues to emerge. This study focused on insights from the leadership development journeys of five successful Asian women executives in US higher education. The purpose of this narrative study was to examine how these women described their leadership development journeys and whether critical reflection impacted their leadership development. Key insights from their stories were highlighted from interviews for aspiring Asian women candidates to better prepare for their career advancement. These insights include practical advice on mentor and network strategies as well as behavioral advice for aspiring candidates to develop skills to be more assertive and take calculated risks in reaching for stretch positions. Insights are also documented for academic institutions to improve their leadership development construct, including improved training formats, development programs and selection processes. There are many research reports which explore gender differences in leadership and a few that focus on minority challenges. However, the discussion of Asian women in the context of educational leadership is limited and this research will contribute to leadership studies.
