Book Asian Traditions and Modernization

Download or read book Asian Traditions and Modernization written by Mun Cheong Yong and published by Marshall Cavendish Academic. This book was released on 2004 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asian Traditions and Modernization studies various aspects of change in Singapore and explores the ways in which tradition has shaped and moderated the process of modernization. Employing a multi-faceted approach that covers history, religion, science, ethnic relations and language, the book looks in depth at a country which has witnessed rapid modernization and yet at the same time desires to preserve cultural values. Because tradition and modernization are relative and open-ended concepts, traditional values can be modern in their orientation and conversely, modern societies can be traditional in their practices. The focal concern of the book is how these terms can be best and fully understood. This reissue features a new preface by the author.

Book Modernization In Asia The Environment resources Social Mobilization And Traditional Landscapes Across Time And Space In Asia

This book was released on 2021-12-10 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the unfolding of modernity in the greater Asia that uniquely takes shape at different times and places, with a particular attention to a common thread that has been at heart of the development: religion. The status of religion has been relegated in the Western modernity to such that its effects be restricted within the private realm and not be exerted in the public or one's rationality. This edited volume sheds light on the multifarious forces of religion both in the past and present that have impacted on the essential aspects of modern society — aspects in which one does not usually have recourse to religion in the West — from science and technology, politics, and to identity in Asia. Interdisciplinary approaches in the volume allow one to broadly examine religious practices within Asian contexts, thus enabling to reevaluate the concept, scope, and gamut of so-called religion.

Download or read book Fashion Identity and Power in Modern Asia written by Kyunghee Pyun and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-10-25 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume on radical dress reforms in East Asia takes a fresh look at the symbols and languages of modernity in dress and body. Dress reform movements around the turn of the twentieth century in the region have received little critical attention as a multicultural discourse of labor, body, gender identity, colonialism, and government authority. With contributions by leading experts of costume/textile history of China, Korea, and Japan, this book presents up-to-date scholarship using diverse methodologies in costume history, history of consumption, and international trade. Thematically organized into sections exploring the garments and uniforms, accessories, fabrics, and fashion styles of Asia, this edited volume offers case studies for students and scholars in an ever-expanding field of material culture including, but not limited to, economic history, visual culture, art history, history of journalism, and popular culture. Fashion, Identity, and Power in Modern Asia stimulates further research on the impact of modernity and imperialism in neglected areas such as military uniform, school uniform, women’s accessories, hairstyles, and textile trade.

Download or read book China s Great Transformation written by Ambrose Y. C. King and published by The Chinese University of Hong Kong Press. This book was released on 2018-03-15 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines how Confucian traditions have shaped modernity in East Asia. Ambrose Y. C. King discusses how China and East Asia developed a model of modern civilization distinct from the Western model of modernization, which involves not only a process of deconstructing the cultural tradition but also a process of reconstructing it. He shows how the experience of modernization diverges within different Chinese societies, namely Hong Kong, Mainland China, and Taiwan. By highlighting the impact of Confucianism, he argues that Confucianism contains the seeds of modernization and transformation, and that in the right institutional settings these seeds influence the course of development. King focuses on how Confucian ideas and values underpinning the foundation of East Asian societies, including social civility, political governance, the role of the family, and moral regulation, matter to the modern social and political transformations of Chinese societies today.

Book Tradition and Modernization in Japanese Culture

Download or read book Tradition and Modernization in Japanese Culture written by Donald H. Shively and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-08 with total page 711 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essays on the Iwakura Embassy, the realistic painter Takahashi Yuichi, the educational system, and music, show how the Japanese went about borrowing from the West in the first decades after the Restoration: the formulation of strategies for modernizing and the adaptation of Western models to Meiji culture. In the second half of the volume, the darker side, the pathology of modernization, is seen. The adjustment of the individual and the effects of progressive modernization on culture in an increasingly complex, twentieth-century society are recurring themes. They are illustrated with particular intensity in the experience of such writers as Natsume Soseki and Kobayashi Hideo, in the thought of Nishida Kitaro, and in the millenarian aspects of the new religions. Originally published in 1971. Download or read book Women in Asia written by Mina Roces and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-07-25 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women in Asia: Tradition, Modernity and Globalisation surveys the transformation in the status of women since 1970 in a diverse range of nations: Malaysia, China, Indonesia, Singapore, the Philippines, India, Taiwan, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Korea, Japan and Burma. Within these 13 national case studies the book presents new arguments about being women, being Asian and being modern in contemporary Asia. Recent social changes in women's place in society are untangled in recognition that not all change is 'progress' and that not all 'modernity' enhances women's status. The authors suggest that the improvements in women's status within the Asian region vary dramatically according to the manner in which women interact with the particular economic and ideological forces in each nation. Each contributor has focussed on a particular country in their area of expertise. They present innovative arguments relating to the problem of 'being women' in Asia during a period of dramatic social and political changes. Each national case study explores key social and economic markers of women's status such as employment rates, wage differentials, literacy rates and participation in politics or business. The effects of population control programs, legislation on domestic violence and female infanticide, and women's role in the family and the workforce are also discussed. The book poses questions as to how women have negotiated these shifts and in the process created a 'modern' Asian woman. Specialists from a variety of disciplines including history, anthropology, sociology, demography, gender studies and psychology grapple with the complexities and ambivalences presented by the multiple faces of the modern Asian woman. Complete with a list of recommended readings and a web-site with links to electronic resources, the book will be of particular interest to undergraduate students of Asian studies and women's studies as well as scholars and postgraduate students interested in comparative women's studies.
