  • Author : James Clay Moltz
  • Publisher : Columbia University Press
  • Release : 2011-12-13
  • ISBN : 0231527578
  • Pages : 289 pages

Download or read book Asia s Space Race written by James Clay Moltz and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2011-12-13 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In contrast to the close cooperation practiced among European states, space relations among Asian states have become increasingly tense. If current trends continue, the Asian civilian space competition could become a military race. To better understand these emerging dynamics, James Clay Moltz conducts the first in-depth policy analysis of Asia's fourteen leading space programs, concentrating especially on developments in China, Japan, India, and South Korea. Moltz isolates the domestic motivations driving Asia's space actors, revisiting critical events such as China's 2007 antisatellite weapons test and manned flights, Japan's successful Kaguya lunar mission and Kibo module for the International Space Station (ISS), India's Chandrayaan lunar mission, and South Korea's astronaut visit to the ISS, along with plans to establish independent space-launch capability. He investigates these nations' divergent space goals and their tendency to focus on national solutions and self-reliance rather than regionwide cooperation and multilateral initiatives. He concludes with recommendations for improved intra-Asian space cooperation and regional conflict prevention. Moltz also considers America's efforts to engage Asia's space programs in joint activities and the prospects for future U.S. space leadership. He extends his analysis to the relationship between space programs and economic development in Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, North Korea, Pakistan, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam, making this a key text for international relations and Asian studies scholars.

Book Toward a U S Japan Technology Alliance

Download or read book Toward a U S Japan Technology Alliance written by Michael J. Green and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-11-08 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As economic strategy and national security become increasingly intertwined, Japan and the United States are aligned on the importance of protecting critical and emerging technologies to manage strategic competition with China. As the technology policy debate advances rapidly in both countries, there is great potential for bilateral cooperation to enhance competitiveness and coordinate approaches with other regional allies and partners. This edited volume is an anthology of nine essays from Japanese and U.S. scholars examining the technology policy landscape with an eye toward developing recommendations for bilateral cooperation in the years ahead. Topics include U.S. and Japanese technology strategy, economic security, and rulemaking for the digital economy. The conclusion synthesizes the authors’ recommendations and outlines an agenda for a U.S.-Japan technology alliance to manage competition in new domains and underwrite norms for economic security in the digital economy.

Book Emerging Space Powers

Download or read book Emerging Space Powers written by Brian Harvey and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-01-30 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work introduces the important emerging space powers of the world. Brian Harvey describes the origins of the Japanese space program, from rocket designs based on WW II German U-boats to tiny solid fuel 'pencil' rockets, which led to the launch of the first Japanese satellite in 1970. The next two chapters relate how Japan expanded its space program, developing small satellites into astronomical observatories and sending missions to the Moon, Mars, comet Halley, and asteroids. Chapter 4 describes how India's Vikram Sarabhai developed a sounding rocket program in the 1960s. The following chapter describes the expansion of the Indian space program. Chapter 6 relates how the Indian space program is looking ahead to the success of the moon probe Chandrayan, due to launch in 2008, and its first manned launching in 2014. Chapters 7, 8, and 9 demonstrate how, in Iran, communications and remote sensing drive space technology. Chapter 10 outlines Brazil's road to space, begun in the mid-1960's with the launch of the Sonda sounding rockets. The following two chapters describe Brazil's satellites and space launch systems and plans for the future. Chapters 13 and 14 study Israel's space industry. The next chapters look at the burgeoning space programs of North and South Korea. The book ends by contrasting and comparing all the space programs and speculating how they may evolve in the future. An appendix lists all launches and launch attempts to date of the emerging space powers.
