Book Biology Evolution and Conservation of River Dolphins Within South America and Asia

Download or read book Biology Evolution and Conservation of River Dolphins Within South America and Asia written by Manuel Ruiz-Garcia and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: True river dolphins as well as marine dolphins that frequent freshwater systems are large animals that have traditionally gone unnoticed by the general public and, in a certain sense, by marine mammal specialists as well. In fact, only a limited number of researchers have investigated the biology of these dolphin species. This is quite surprising given that these species are commonly the top predators in their habitats. Now for the first time, revolutionary molecular techniques are being applied to answer evolutionary reconstruction questions of many animals, including river dolphins. In addition, new paleontological records are dramatically changing our perspective about the relationships of these dolphins with each other and with other cetaceans. In this book, new census information and important ecological characteristics are provided of the river dolphins Inia, Sotalia, Pontoporia, Lioptes, and Orcaella. For the first time, molecular and genetic results of theses dolphin species are presented. A compilation of these data is essential if we are to present a strategic conservation plan for these animals. Upon being informed of critical evolutionary historical data, conservation biologists will now be able to tailor their conservation efforts for each threatened river dolphin species. Additionally, new morphological data and the new discoveries in the fossil record for river dolphins are examined. The major dolphin specialists in Colombia, Brazil, Bolivia, Argentina, the United States of America, China, and India present their newest results within a single book that graduate students, professors, scientists, evolutionary ecologists, aquatic mammalogists, population ecologists, conservation ecologists, and marine biologists will all find valuable for the foreseeable future.

Book excerpt: After being hunted nearly to the point of extinction, the cetaceans have now become a symbol of the need for marine conservation. Today, dolphins and whales are featured in numerous books and television documentaries, which has allowed people to connect with them. Bringing together the most recent research on cetaceans, this volume provides a scientific grounding to our feelings for these distant relatives of ours. Filled with splendid photographs and drawings, the book describes in realistic detail the fascinating biology and behavior of dolphins and whales. Cetaceans returned to the sea about 60 million years ago, and today, represented by 81 species, they have colonized nearly all the world's oceans and some big rivers in South America and Asia. Dolphins and whales have been the subject of many legends, and so this book begins with the history of how humans have viewed these creatures, and then it explains their evolution. The special features that enable these mammals to live like fish, sometimes being able to swim extremely fast (certain dolphin species travel over 31 mph) or dive unusually deep (sperm whales can dive to depths of 9900 feet) are also discussed, along with such topics as echolocation and language. At the end, readers will find an illustrated guide to the various species. A useful tool as well as a visual delight, Dolphins and Whales will be a valued addition to all ocean-lovers' libraries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yangtze River dolphins, also known as Baiji, have splashed in the waters of Chinas Yangtze River for millions of years. The Chinese people have always loved these mammals. They considered the Baiji to be a beautiful part of their river, and they have told many stories about them. Today, the Yangtze is a very different place. Trash floats in the water, and toxic chemicals pollute it. Thousands of boats travel up and down the river every day, and people use dangerous fishing equipment with sharp rolling hooks. The Yangtze River is no longer a safe place for the Baiji to live. Most of them have died out. Scientists worry that it might be too late for these dolphins. Is there any way to save them?

This fully illustrated book is a comprehensive and attractive guide to the marine mammals of the North Atlantic--and the only guide to cover all fifty-one species found there. It offers whale watchers and other marine mammal enthusiasts the means to identify the region's seals, manatees, walrus, and polar bear in addition to its forty species of whales, dolphins, and porpoises.Distribution maps for each species complement the 250 striking color illustrations. The straightforward text emphasizes diagnostic features but also covers the behavior, reproduction, feeding, habitat, and migration of these intrinsically fascinating animals. In the process, the book sorts out marine mammal taxonomy, answering such questions as how dolphins and porpoises differ and whether killer whales are really dolphins or whales. As a guide, this book will be invaluable to boaters, divers, shore dwellers, and all who venture into or on North Atlantic water. It will also interest aquarium visitors and anyone who has ever wanted to see a pod of whales, school of dolphins, or society of porpoises in action. * illustrates and depicts the diagnostic features of all 51 marine mammal species occurring in the North Atlantic * gives full coverage to not only whales, dolphins, and porpoises but also seals, manatees, the walrus, and the polar bear * features 250 color illustrations * contains distribution maps for each species and provides information on behavior, reproduction, and feeding for each species * describes the North Atlantic as a habitat for marine mammals * features concise text written by a top expert Carl Christian Kinze is Coordinator and Public Education Officer for the Danish Cetacean Study Network and a former President of the European Cetacean Society.
