Book Contemporary Asian Art and Exhibitions

Download or read book Contemporary Asian Art and Exhibitions written by Caroline Turner and published by ANU Press. This book was released on 2014-10-03 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “… a diverse and stimulating group of essays that together represents a significant contribution to thinking about the nascent field of contemporary Asian art studies … Contemporary Asian Art and Exhibitions: Connectivities and World-making … brings together essays by significant academics, curators and artist working in Australia, Asia and the United Kingdom that reflect on contemporary art in the Asia-Pacific region, and Australia’s cultural interconnections with Asia. It will be a welcome addition to the body of literature related to these emergent areas of art historical study. ” — Dr Claire Roberts, Senior Lecturer in Art History, University of Adelaide This volume draws together essays by leading art experts observing the dramatic developments in Asian art and exhibitions in the last two decades. The authors explore new regional and global connections and new ways of understanding contemporary Asian art in the twenty-first century. The essays coalesce around four key themes: world-making; intra-Asian regional connections; art’s affective capacity in cross-cultural engagement; and Australia’s cultural connections with Asia. In exploring these themes, the essays adopt a diversity of approaches and encompass art history, art theory, visual culture and museum studies, as well as curatorial and artistic practice. With introductory and concluding essays by editors Michelle Antoinette and Caroline Turner this volume features contributions from key writers on the region and on contemporary art: Patrick D Flores, John Clark, Chaitanya Sambrani, Pat Hoffie, Charles Merewether, Marsha Meskimmon, Francis Maravillas, Oscar Ho, Alison Carroll and Jacqueline Lo. Richly illustrated with artworks by leading contemporary Asian artists, Contemporary Asian Art and Exhibitions: Connectivities and World-making will be essential reading for those interested in recent developments in contemporary Asian art, including students and scholars of art history, Asian studies, museum studies, visual and cultural studies.

Book Intersections of Contemporary Art Anthropology and Art History in South Asia

Download or read book Intersections of Contemporary Art Anthropology and Art History in South Asia written by Sasanka Perera and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-02-23 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking South Asia as its focus, this wide-ranging collection probes the general reluctance of the cultural anthropology to engage with contemporary visual art and artists, including painting, sculpture, performance art and installation. Through case studies engaged equally in anthropology and visual studies, contributors examine art and artistic production in India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Nepal to bring the social and political complexities of artistic practice to the fore. Demonstrating the potential of the visual as a means to understand a society, its values, and its politics, this volume ranges across discourses of anthropology, sociology, biography, memory, art history, and contemporary practices of visual art. Ultimately, Intersections of Contemporary Art, Anthropology and Art History in South Asia simultaneously expands and challenges the disciplinary foci of two fields: it demonstrates to art criticism and art history the necessity of anthropological and sociological methodologies and theories, while at the same time challenging the “iconophobia” of social sciences.

Download or read book India s Biennale Effect written by Robert E. D'Souza and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-10-14 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India’s Kochi-Muziris Biennale has been described as one of the most significant newly emergent biennales, alongside Shanghai, Sharjah and Dakar. However, there have been few sustained and critical studies of these events as specific sites of production and reception of contemporary art. This book, engaging with the Kochi Biennale, provides detailed examination of what the editors term as the ‘biennale effect’ — a layered contestation of place, economics, art and politics. It presents a close reading of the unique context of the biennale as well as sets out a broader critical framework for understanding global contemporary art and its effects. Replete with illustrations, this book will serve as an important and rare resource for scholars and researchers of contemporary art, art history, visual cultures, and media studies.

Book History of Japanese Art after 1945

Download or read book History of Japanese Art after 1945 written by Kitazawa Noriaki and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2023-03-20 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English edition of key essays on Japanese art history History of Japanese Art after 1945 surveys the development of art in Japan since WWII. The original Japanese work, which has become essential reading for those with an interest in modern and contemporary Japanese art and is a foundational resource for students and researchers, spans a period of 150 years, from the 1850s to the 2010s. Each chapter is dedicated to a specific period and written by a specialist. The English edition first discusses the formation and evolution of Japanese contemporary art from 1945 to the late 1970s, subsequently deals with the rise of the fine-art museum from the late 1970s to the 1990s, and concludes with an overview of contemporary Japanese art dating from the 1990s to the 2010s. These three parts are preceded by a new introduction that contextualizes both the original Japanese and the English editions and introduces the reader to the emergence of the concept of art (bijutsu) in modern Japan. This English-language edition provides valuable reading material that offers a deeper insight into contemporary Japanese art. With an introduction by Kajiya Kenji. Contributors: Kitazawa Noriaki (editor), Mori Hitoshi (editor), Sato Doushin (editor), Tom Kain (translation editor), Alice Kiwako Ashiwa (translator), Kenneth Masaki Shima (translator), Ariel Acosta (translator), and Sara Sumpter (translator) Translated from the original Japanese edition published with Tokyo Bijutsu, 2014 In cooperation with Art Platform Japan / The Agency for Cultural Affairs, Government of Japan Art Platform Japan is an initiative by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, Government of Japan, to maintain the sustainable development of the contemporary art scene in Japan.

Book What Does It Mean to Be Post Soviet

Download or read book What Does It Mean to Be Post Soviet written by Madina Tlostanova and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-15 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In What Does It Mean to Be Post-Soviet? Madina Tlostanova traces how contemporary post-Soviet art mediates this human condition. Observing how the concept of the happy future—which was at the core of the project of Soviet modernity—has lapsed from the post-Soviet imagination, Tlostanova shows how the possible way out of such a sense of futurelessness lies in the engagement with activist art. She interviews artists, art collectives, and writers such as Estonian artist Liina Siib, Uzbek artist Vyacheslav Akhunov, and Azerbaijani writer Afanassy Mamedov who frame the post-Soviet condition through the experience and expression of community, space, temporality, gender, and negotiating the demands of the state and the market. In foregrounding the unfolding aesthesis and activism in the post-Soviet space, Tlostanova emphasizes the important role that decolonial art plays in providing the foundation upon which to build new modes of thought and a decolonial future.

Book excerpt: Transcending Reality Charlie Chaplin once said that nobody lives long enough to be anything but an amateur. This expression unequivocally applies to artists, for creating art is a continuous process of learning and discovery. In order to bring the fascinating riches of artistic creativity within the reach of the mankind, ANOKHII has collaborated with artists from around the world in compiling this book. My desire is to arouse creativity and evoke a feeling of depth by bringing the plethoric wealth of art into this book. By faithfully rendering the simplicity and richness of these paintings, this book intends to preserve the ‘universal language’ of art. Painting is produced when diverse range of colours harmonise together. By blending all the remarkable paintings, I wish to create harmony. In Carl Sagan’s words, ‘In the vastness of space and the immensity of time, it is my joy..’ to edit this book. Editing this book has been a huge task. I feel fortunate to have worked on it and want to thank all artists for their contributions, thoughtful opinions and patience. I hope that this book will be an ever-present source of inspiration, offering the remarkable panorama of artists around the world. To anyone who gives close mindfulness, the insights and visions contained in these paintings will extend way beyond to define what art truly is. I extend my sincere thanks and gratitude to all the valuable personalities who supported me in releasing the book
