Book excerpt: Asian American (AA) adolescents and young adults are at risk for poor psychological adjustment and diminished health. Parental involvement and intergenerational gap in acculturation (IGA) have been independently associated with intergenerational acculturative conflict, a common stressor in the AA population. However, few studies have tested how the influence of parental involvement on intergenerational acculturative conflict/family cohesion and subsequent psychological adjustment may vary depending on IGA; and even fewer studies have investigated how such models apply to AA general health. The goals of the present study were, therefore, to identify pathways linking these acculturative family processes to AA young adult general health in a large sample of Filipino and Southeast Asian (SEA) families. Analyses utilized data from the Children of Immigrants Longitudinal Study (CILS; Portes & Rumbaut, 2001), a national longitudinal study of children from immigrant families. Results suggested that although Filipino and SEA families may differ in the acculturative processes that contribute to intergenerational acculturative conflict and family cohesion, depressive symptoms are an important mechanism through which these family outcomes in adolescence influence young adult general health outcomes in both Filipino and SEA families. This investigation serves to inform future programs aimed at providing targeted interventions for AAs at risk for long-term psychological disorders and physical health problems.

The nature of the parent-child relationship begins with parenting—the practices and strategies that parents engage in as they raise their children. Parenting during childhood sets the stage for parent-adolescent relati- ships. These relationships make a critical difference during the teenage years: we know that when parent-adolescent relationships are healthy and strong, adolescents are more likely to have high aspirations and achievement, and to make healthier choices when it comes to risk-taking. Most of the research in this ?eld has been based in the United States and has been conducted through studies of European American families. Yet a growing body of research suggests important ethnic differences in styles of parenting and the qua- ties characterizing the parent-adolescent relationship. In this area of research, most existing studies have examined ethnic and cultural group differences using widely accepted measures and concepts of parenting. Comparative studies assume that dimensions of parenting such as parental warmth or control have the same meaning across cultures; however, given that conceptualizations of adolescent-parent re- tionships have been developed and tested on samples comprised largely of European Americans, we cannot rule out the possibility that the way we understand parenting has been shaped by the predominantly Western- and U. S. -focused research in this ?eld.

Book excerpt: In effort to fill the research gap of depression among Asian American Adolescents, the purposes of this study were to examine parental involvement and depressive symptoms among Asian American adolescents. Analyses were conducted to determine the relation of age, gender, and parental involvement with occurrence of depression and depressive symptoms among Asian American adolescents. Other than individual effect of one factor, interactive effects of sex, age group, ethnic group and parental involvement were also examined to get more in-depth views on this topic. A total of 540 respondents aged 12-17 who considered themselves as Asian American were selected from 2009 NSDUH regarding their perceptions of parental involvement and depression. Descriptive report and multiple logistic regressions were conducted and the results indicated that among Asian American adolescents, female adolescents not only had higher risk for lifetime MDE but also tended to report more depressive symptoms than male adolescents. Controlling for age and gender, adolescents with low parental involvement were at significant higher risk for MDE than adolescents with high parental involvement. These findings went along with previous studies and recommendations have been included for future studies.
