Book excerpt: Andre and Clara Malraux had the world at their feet. Wealthy and carefree, their life was a bohemian idyll spent frequenting the hottest clubs and restaurants, and traveling and mingling with the Paris literary set. But all this changed when the stock market crashed and their fortune disappeared overnight. Penniless but still craving adventure, Andre dreamt up a plan to travel to French Indochina where they would collect temple treasures and sell them for a huge profit in America. Against all the odds--jungle fevers, inexperience, and uncooperative locals--they succeeded. But their treasure hunt turned into a dangerous crusade when Clara and Andre set up an anti-government newspaper in Saigon, defiantly exposing colonial injustices, corruption, and the government's stifling of Asian culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If youre looking to read about adventures, look no further. ASIA: An Expat Adventure will take you on a four-year journey through several countries and cultures. Its a true testament to what its really like to live in another country, what culturalism really is, and how different the world really can be. Tim shoots from the hip in this anthology of all that is wrong (and a few things that are right) about teaching English in the Far East. ASIA: An Expat Adventure is half I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell and half Frommers; its an essential guide for anybody who wants an insiders view on the agony and the ecstasy (mostly the agony) of ESL life. There are plenty endearing qualities about Tims memoirs, not the least of which is his ability to trudge on when others would have bought the next ticket home. As Tim looks back at his beer-soaked escapades through the clarity and wisdom that hindsight provides, we are granted a view of a man who is as resilient as he is ill-fated, and a world that is as perplexing as it is alluring. Brenan G. Alexander, ESL Teacher, Communications Leader, UBC leaving behind not just his country, but his mind, as he slowly deconstructs his old life (quite literally in some cases, given the numerous surgeries he details) and reassembles the parts into a story worth telling. We all have one. This is his. Enjoy it! Joshua W. Davies, MS Education, LAM Institute, Communications Consultant

For years he had been fascinated by Thailand, reading everything he could about the country and even taking a menial job in a local Thai restaurant to rub shoulders with Thais exiled in the American Midwest.Confronted by the seriously limited employment options open to the holder of a liberal-arts bachelor's degree, he set about transplanting himself to what would soon become his adopted home, and a base for exploring the rest of Asia. An atypically quiet American who never really fit into US society, Carleton Cole has found his place in the Land of Smiles, and has developed and maintained a passion for things Thai and Asian.

Book excerpt: One of the greatest art theft stories of the 20th century: André Malraux, French novelist, art theorist, and eventually France’s Minister of Cultural Affairs, and his wife, Clara, traveled to Cambodia in 1923, planning to steal and smuggle artifacts out of the country and sell them in America. The Cambodian treasure hunt promised to be a mix of cultural sleuthing for important antiquities and risk-taking on the fuzzy edge of the laws that governed historical sites. The jungle expedition ended in arrest and, for André, trial and conviction. But it also led to a second Asian venture: the launching of a Saigon newspaper, L’Indochine, dedicated to the aspirations of the indigenous population. Madsen follows the couple from this fateful adventure that so shaped their future to the end of their marriage, and after.

Book Great Walls of Discourse and Other Adventures in Cultural China

Download or read book Great Walls of Discourse and Other Adventures in Cultural China written by Haun Saussy and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-03-23 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "China" and "the West," "us" and "them," the "subject" and the "non-subject"--these and other dualisms furnish China watchers, both inside and outside China, with a pervasive, ready-made set of definitions immune to empirical disproof. But what does this language of essential difference accomplish? The essays in this book are an attempt to cut short the recitation of differences and to answer this question. In six interpretive studies of China, the author examines the ways in which the networks of assumption and consensus that make communication possible within a discipline affect collective thinking about the object of study. Among other subjects, these essays offer a historical and historiographical introduction to the problem of comparison and deal with translation, religious proselytization, semiotics, linguistics, cultural bilingualism, writing systems, the career of postmodernism in China, and the role of China as an imaginary model for postmodernity in the West. Against the reigning simplifications, these essays seek to restore the interpretation of China to the complexity and impurity of the historical situations in which it is always caught. The chief goal of the essays in this book is not to expose errors in interpreting China but to use these misunderstandings as a basis for devising better methodologies for comparative studies.

Book Singapore Dream and Other Adventures

Download or read book Singapore Dream and Other Adventures written by Hermann Hesse and published by Shambhala Publications. This book was released on 2018-06-26 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hermann Hesse's voyage to the East Indies, recorded in journal entries and other writings translated into English for the first time, describes the experiences that influenced his greatest works. “I knew but few of the trees and animals that I saw around me by name, I was unable to read the Chinese inscriptions, and could exchange only a few words with the children, but nowhere in foreign lands have I felt so little like a foreigner and so completely enfolded by the self-existing naturalness of life’s clear river as I did here.” In 1911, Hermann Hesse sailed through southeastern Asian waters on a trip that would define much of his later writing. Hesse brings his unique eye to scenes such as adventures in a rickshaw, watching foreign theater performances, exploring strange floating cities on stilts, and luxuriating in the simple beauty of the lush natural landscape. Even in the doldrums of travel, he records his experience with faithful humor, wit, and sharp observation, offering a broad vision of travel in the early 1900s. With a glimpse into the workings of his mind through the pages of his journals, poems, and a short story—all translated into English for the first time—these writings describe the real-life experiences that inspired Hesse to pen his most famous works.

Download or read book Call Me Tai Tai written by Shelly Aschkenase and published by . This book was released on 2020-03-20 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the past few decades, China has made the news on a daily basis, and Westerners have flocked over to capitalize on its business boom. While in China, it's one thing to enjoy a short hotel stay and some casual city explorations, but it's another to actually live there. After leading a comfortable life in charming Shaker Heights, Ohio, trailing spouse Shelly Aschkenase suddenly found her family shuttled off to Shanghai for a two-and-a-half-year stint. While countless journalists, teachers, and service mission representatives have described their gritty and heart-warming experiences in the Middle Kingdom, no one has documented the daily dramas and delights of pampered executives' spouses' lives. Thus, Call Me Tai Tai was born. Expect the unexpected in her Asian-expat version of Dallas, as the extraordinary experiences of the unique world she inhabited spring to life. There, a country once isolated and frozen in time hurtles into the twenty-first century at Mach 3 speed, perhaps best symbolized by the way it's iconic ancient wall constructed to keep intruders out ironically reinvented itself, now eagerly inviting millions of visitors per year to tramp over its stones or undertake its challenging marathon. Grab a cup of jasmine tea and enjoy tales of the craziness, the follies, the glamour, and the pleasures encompassing the rarified domain of the early 2000s "Shanghai Tai Tai" in a land struggling to balance the old with the new.
