Book Contesting The Future Of Nuclear Power A Critical Global Assessment Of Atomic Energy

Download or read book Contesting The Future Of Nuclear Power A Critical Global Assessment Of Atomic Energy written by Benjamin K Sovacool and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2011-05-05 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a concise but rigorous appraisal about the future of nuclear power and the presumed nuclear renaissance. It does so by assessing the technical, economic, environmental, political, and social risks related to all aspects of the nuclear fuel cycle, from uranium mills and mines to nuclear reactors and spent fuel storage facilities. In each case, the book argues that the costs of nuclear power significantly outweigh its benefits. It concludes by calling for investments in renewable energy and energy efficiency as a better path towards an affordable, secure, and socially acceptable future. The prospect of a global nuclear renaissance could change the way that energy is produced and used the world over. Sovacool takes a hard look at who would benefit — mostly energy companies and manufacturers — and who would suffer — mostly taxpayers, those living near nuclear facilities, and electricity customers. This book is a must-read for anyone even remotely concerned about a sustainable energy future, and also for those with a specific interest in modern nuclear power plants.

Book Nuclear Proliferation in South Asia

Download or read book Nuclear Proliferation in South Asia written by Sumit Ganguly and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2008-08-06 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume explores competing perspectives on the impact of nuclear weapons proliferation on the South Asian security environment. The spread of nuclear weapons is one of the world’s foremost security concerns. The effect of nuclear weapons on the behaviour of newly nuclear states, and the potential for future international crises, are of particular concern. As a region of burgeoning economic and political importance, South Asia offers a crucial test of proliferation’s effects on the crisis behaviour of newly nuclear states. This volume creates a dialogue between scholars who believe that nuclear weapons have stabilized the subcontinent, and those who believe that nuclear weapons have made South Asia more conflict prone. It does so by pairing competing analyses of four major regional crises: the 1987 "Brasstacks" crisis, the Indo-Pakistani crisis of 1990, the 1999 Kargil war, which occurred after the nuclear tests; and the 2001–2 Indo-Pakistani militarized standoff. In addition, the volume explores the implications of the South Asian nuclear experience for potential new nuclear states such as North Korea and Iran.

Book East Asia s Nuclear Future A Long Term View of Threat Reduction

Download or read book East Asia s Nuclear Future A Long Term View of Threat Reduction written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking a long-term perspective, East Asia presents some of the most important nuclear challenges on the global scene. Preventing the emergence of new nuclear-armed states in the region remains a top U.S. priority. To reduce long-term risks, the U.S. has pursued strategies to promote regional security and nonproliferation, as now being updated by the Bush administration. The impact of ballistic missile defense (BMD) is hotly debated in Asia, with best- and worst case possibilities now coming into focus. With an eye toward achieving best-case outcomes, the U.S. should tailor its BMD and arms control strategies in ways that enhance not only deterrence but also reassurance.

Book excerpt: The rising demand for energy, the higher costs of oil and gas, and the association of fossil fuels with adverse climate change have all brought a renewed interest in nuclear energy. Nuclear power, however, is itself controversial, because of its costs, its environmental effects and the security risks it poses. This book discusses these critical issues surrounding nuclear power in relation to Asia. It discusses also the politics of nuclear power and the activities of civil society organisations concerned about nuclear issues. Throughout the book the perspectives are included of both proponents and opponents of nuclear power on the key controversial issues.

Book Nuclear Power in Asia Post Fukushima

Download or read book Nuclear Power in Asia Post Fukushima written by Zoya Akhter Fathima and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-11-03 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster led many to believe that the nuclear era was coming to an end. More than ten years since, Asia is leading the global nuclear sector. Contributing to two-thirds of the global construction of reactors and exhibiting its technical prowess in the nuclear research and development arena, the future of nuclear power in Asia appears to be on a positive trajectory. This development is driven by a mix of urgent necessity, aided by the realisation that benefits offered by nuclear power are not just environmental in character but also economic and strategic. In this context, the book examines the energy trends and the current state of nuclear power in the Asian continent and endeavours to answer the much-deliberated question of whether Asia is witnessing a nuclear renaissance again. To address this question, the book explores the policy responses by Asian countries to the Fukushima disaster. It attempts to map the future trajectory of nuclear power in Asia and tries to identify the factors that may accelerate or limit its growth.
