Book excerpt: Asia Reborn unveils the story of Asia's resurgence over the past century. In the first single chronicle of the modern economic and political history of the whole continent, Prasenjit K. Basu weaves together a compelling account of how Asia's nations overcame European domination in the twentieth century-and its legacies of war and famine-to begin the long climb to economic dynamism. Asia Reborn shows British, Dutch and French colonies to have had scant infrastructure or modern industry and to have consequently been far behind Taiwan, Manchuria and Korea in social indicators such as literacy and life expectancy by mid-century. In West Asia and Burma, the brief European imprint created the ethnic conflicts that still plague these regions. The British Indian Army held the edifice of empire together. Ultimately, it was the undermining of its legitimacy by the armies of Subhas Bose, Sukarno, Ho Chi Minh and Aung San that helped end the ravaging of Asia during the first half of the twentieth century. By the end of the century, the eastern part of the liberated continent, had emulated Japan and Singapore in transforming itself into an industrious, dynamic and increasingly creative force finally capable of taking its people to new heights in an Asian twenty-first century.

Book excerpt: The geopolitical landscape of Southeast Asia has been dramatically re-shaped with the emergence of East Timor as the world's newest nation. Like a phoenix, East Timor has risen triumphantly from the ashes of Indonesian invasion and occupation. But it has paid a heavy price for its independence. Hundreds of thousands perished in the bloody struggle for power waged between the competing Timorese political factions following the collapse of Portuguese colonial rule and the David-and-Goliath struggle with Indonesia that followed. While this journey to independence ended with East Timor's referendum in August 1999, it began with Portugal's abandonment a quarter of a century earlier. TIMOR: A Nation Reborn revisits that crucial period in history and the pursuit of power by individuals and factions competing for local dominance, as well as regional giants conspiring to fulfill their own political agendas. TIMOR is a story of lies, deceit, intrigue, naivet and suffering. It is a human story with tragic consequences compellingly documented first-hand by author Bill Nicol.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book studies the various representations of Asia in Bengali literary periodicals between the 1860s and 1940s. It looks at how these periodicals tried to analyse the political situation in Asia in the context of world politics and how Indian nationalistic ideas and associations impacted their vision. The volume highlights the influences of cosmopolitanism, universalism and nationalism which contributed towards a common vision of a united and powerful Asia and how these ideas were put into practice. It analyses travel accounts by men and women and examines how women became the focus of the didactic efforts of all writers for a horizontal dissemination of Asian consciousness. The author also provides a discussion on Asian art and culture, past and present connections between Asian countries and the resurgence of 19th-century Buddhism in the consciousness of the Bengalis. Rich in archival material, Knowing Asia, Being Asian will be useful for scholars and researchers of history, Asian studies, modern India, cultural studies, media studies, journalism, publishing, post-colonial studies, travel writings, women and gender studies, political studies and social anthropology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: None a Stranger There offers a collection of wide-ranging essays that explore the creation and understanding of English identity through the lens of early modern drama. Drawing together a rich array of disciplines--literary criticism, theater history, linguistics, book history, and performance studies--the scholars in this collection illuminate how diverse or competing notions of "Englishness" can be seen and studied in early modern English plays. They are an especially fertile site of study because they enabled collective performances in a variety of settings, such as public theaters, royal courts, and streets. They engaged with live audiences from a cross section of society. The contributors also draw parallels in plays of the period between past and present. They identify vivid struggles over controversies--especially Brexit and neonationalism--that still bedevil Britain and much of the western world: attitudes about and experiences of immigrants; xenophobia and tolerance; multiculturalism, assimilation, and hybridity; patriotism and jingoism; racial and ethnic identity; border-making and border-crossing; transnational itinerancy; and other topics. None a Stranger There provides a nuanced understanding of how early modern dramatists shaped and responded to questions about English identity and its relationship with Europe and beyond. It emphasizes the fluidity and complexities of national identity, reminding us that these debates remain deeply relevant in an interconnected world. Book The Assyrian Genocide

    Book Details:
  • Author : Hannibal Travis
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2017-07-20
  • ISBN : 1351980254
  • Pages : 261 pages

Download or read book The Assyrian Genocide written by Hannibal Travis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-20 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a brief period, the attention of the international community has focused once again on the plight of religious minorities in Iraq, Syria, and Turkey. In particular, the abductions and massacres of Yezidis and Assyrians in the Sinjar, Mosul, Nineveh Plains, Baghdad, and Hasakah regions in 2007–2015 raised questions about the prevention of genocide. This book, while principally analyzing the Assyrian genocide of 1914–1925 and its implications for the culture and politics of the region, also raises broader questions concerning the future of religious diversity in the Middle East. It gathers and analyzes the findings of a broad spectrum of historical and scholarly works on Christian identities in the Middle East, genocide studies, international law, and the politics of the late Ottoman Empire, as well as the politics of the Ottomans' British and Russian rivals for power in western Asia and the eastern Mediterranean basin. A key question the book raises is whether the fate of the Assyrians maps onto any of the concepts used within international law and diplomatic history to study genocide and group violence. In this light, the Assyrian genocide stands out as being several times larger, in both absolute terms and relative to the size of the affected group, than the Srebrenica genocide, which is recognized by Turkey as well as by international tribunals and organizations. Including its Armenian and Greek victims, the Ottoman Christian Genocide rivals the Rwandan, Bengali, and Biafran genocides. The book also aims to explore the impact of the genocide period of 1914–1925 on the development or partial unraveling of Assyrian group cohesion, including aspirations to autonomy in the Assyrian areas of northern Iraq, northwestern Iran, and southeastern Turkey. Scholars from around the world have collaborated to approach these research questions by reference to diplomatic and political archives, international legal materials, memoirs, and literary works.
