Book excerpt: The United States has carved the world into five pieces, maintaining troops and military leadership in each. Yet outside military and defense circles, the potential impact of post-1990 American strategic reach-or perhaps overreach-has not been given sufficient attention. This timely reader fills this gap by collecting the perspectives of American presidents, policymakers, military officers, establishment think tanks, and critical scholars. The text and accompanying CD bring together in one place a synthesis of official and semi-official views of post-1990 regional security agendas and of the evolving perception of post-Cold War threat scenarios. The CD accompanying the book sends readers directly to major policy documents and studies described in the text. The book and CD combined offer teachers a unique resource, providing a wealth of stimulating material for the classroom that is sure to promote critical thinking and spark lively discussion and debate.

Book Asia Pacific Security Dynamics in the Obama Era

Download or read book Asia Pacific Security Dynamics in the Obama Era written by S. Mahmud Ali and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the critical changes to the Asia-Pacific security architecture emerging in the context of shifts in the global order as the Obama Administrationâe(tm)s major strategic innovation and likely legacy unfold. The author reviews the state of the international security system during the Obama presidency, recording the Administrationâe(tm)s Asia-Pacific inheritance, and tracing its efforts to chart a collaborative course aimed at retaining US primacy amidst strategic turbulence. While security discourses are coloured by relative US âe~declineâe(tm) and Chinaâe(tm)s âe~rise,âe(tm) the book points out the competitive-cooperative complexity of interactions, with symbiotic economic ties moderating rivalry. Focusing on the military-security cutting edge of Sino-US dynamics, the narrative outlines the dangers posed by extreme nationalist dialectics in an interdependent milieu. It examines the policies of Japan, Australia, India and Russia towards the evolving Sino-US diarchy, while recording Washingtonâe(tm)s and Beijingâe(tm)s contrasting approaches to these allies and possible adversaries. The book concludes with observations on the loss of definition and clarity as the system evolves with multiple actors bidding for influence, and the need for statesmanship as the systemic fulcrum moves from the Atlantic to the Pacific. ãee This book will be of interest to students and scholars of International Politics, Asian Politics, American Politics, International Security and International Relations.

Book The Other Special Relationship

Download or read book The Other Special Relationship written by Jeffrey D. McCausland and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume summarizes the major findings of the conference participants over the last year. Beyond the thematic resemblance between this volume and the previous study of U.S.-UK relations, another similarity is the importance of two events in determining London and Canberra's relations with Washington. The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 (9/11) represent the first turning point. The British and Australian governments reacted similarly to these attacks -- immediately identifying 9/11 as a transformative moment in international relations. But the Australian Prime Minister's presence in Washington, DC, during the 9/11 terrorist attacks intensified the personal impact of the events, and within a few days his government had invoked the ANZUS Treaty to offer its full support to the United States. The second "big event" dominating both U.S.-UK relations and U.S.-Australia relations has been America's management of the Global War on Terror and, in particular, its leadership of the ongoing operations in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Book The Asia Pacific in the U S National Security Calculus for a New Millennium

Download or read book The Asia Pacific in the U S National Security Calculus for a New Millennium written by Andrew Scobell and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors of this monograph survey the challenges to U.S. national security that confront this diverse and dynamic region, highlighting the particularly volatile situation that continues on the Korean peninsula. Beyond continued U.S. attention to maintaining a robust military presence and steadfast U.S. alliances, they argue that the United States, without ignoring the key dimensions in the U.S. National Security Strategy of responding and preparing now, should give a greater emphasis to shaping the Asia-Pacific region. They contend that the time is ripe for the United States to launch a major shaping initiative to help ensure that the positive trends of marketization, democratization, and regional integration continue and strengthen in the 21st century. Building on a bipartisan consensus with careful attention to interagency coordination at home, and in close consultation with allies abroad, the United States, they recommend, should devise a new road map to guide Asia-Pacific policy. The authors conclude that, due to finite resources, the United States should concentrate in particular on pivotal states--those countries that serve as linchpins in the region. They identify several such states and urge special attention to these to help ensure that they evolve along democratic, prosperous, and peaceful trajectories. The authors conclude that the most serious concern remains North Korea and they suggest a cautious, consistent, and pragmatic approach to Pyongyang targeted at fostering evolutionary change with incremental improvements in bilateral relations by the United States depending on positive moves by North Korea.
