Asia Me & My Girl tells the amazing true story of the first half of their incredible adventure, as they travel 20,000km overland from their hometown of Cardiff, in South Wales, to the Far Eastern shores of Singapore. Read all about their unforgettable six-day crossing of Siberia, before traversing the infamous Gobi Desert in Mongolia and how they are kidnapped and virtually held to ransom by a bogus taxi-driver and his compatriots in Beijing, China. Shaun also tells the unbelievable stories of how he and his daughter had a magnificent day in Xian, visiting the Terracotta Warriors -before meeting the farmer who had actually discovered them and how the pair of them had their photo taken with the one and only living survivor of the notorious S21 Prison Camp from the Killing Fields of Cambodia. In Thailand all hell breaks loose as our intrepid explorers spend their days bottle-feeding leopard cubs, walking with tigers and swimming with elephants, before climbing the 7-tiers of the Erawan Waterfall, crossing the Bridge over the River Kwai, riding the Thailand to Burma Death Railway -and walking the length of Hellfire Pass. To round-off their ten-week Voyage of Discovery our dynamic duo pay a visit to the phenomenal PETRONAS Towers in Malaysia -and in Singapore they come face-to-face with the Lords of the Jungle, as they embark on their first ever night-time safari.

Book Asian American Sexual Politics

Download or read book Asian American Sexual Politics written by Rosalind S. Chou and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2012 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asian American Sexual Politics explores the topics of beauty, self-esteem, and sexual attraction among Asian Americans. The book draws on sixty in-depth interviews to show how constructions of Asian American gender and sexuality tend to reinforce the social and political dominance for whites, particularly white males, even in the supposed "post-racial" United States. Drawing on established scholarship on the intersection of race, gender, and sexuality, Asian American Sexual Politics shows how power dynamics shape the lives of young Asian Americans today. Asian American women are often constructed as hyper-sexual docile bodies, while Asian American men are often racially "castrated." The book's interview excerpts show the range of frames through which Asian Americans approach the world, as well as the counter-frames they construct. In the final chapter, author Rosalind S. Chou offers strategies for countering racialized and sexualized oppression. This provocative book shows how persistent racism affects Asian American body image, self-esteem, and intimate relationships.

Book Bat out of Hell

Download or read book Bat out of Hell written by Shaun Donovan and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2019-05-03 with total page 607 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Bat out of Hell –The Movie’, is the true story of one man’s quest to create an epic feature-length film which he truly believes will be the ‘movie to end all movies’. Based on the best-selling paperback ‘Jupiter’s Travel’s’, by Ted Simon’, which tells the true story of this man’s unbelievable four-year motorcycle journey around the world, Shaun Donovan attempts to recapture the spirit of the now legendary ‘Easy Rider’ movie, by combining all the thrills and spills which Ted encompassed along the way, into one blockbuster production –a movie which will set the hearts of bikers around the world alight, as he rekindles their passions for a life of freedom on the road. Armed with a hand-written manuscript, a home-made movie poster –and a soundtrack that should simply blow Ted away, Shaun flies 6,000 miles to the home of Mr. Simon, where he proudly presents the ‘Sales pitch of his life’. After listening to various tunes, Ted agrees how uncanny it is that the lyrics in the songs from Meat-Loafs now legendary ‘Bat out of Hell’ album could easily portray actual scenes taken from Ted’s storyline –and so the stage was now set. Over the next twelve months Shaun embarked on a quest that would involve numerous meetings with the heads of various film and television companies across the UK, before a twist in the tale occurs, when it is suggested that Shaun retrace Ted’s journey from start to finish, subsequently creating a six-part documentary series for BBC television, entitled ‘Steps of Jupiter -20 years on’. Apart from planning and preparing an 8,000-mile ‘solo’ motorcycle journey from Cardiff to Cape-Town, read how Shaun also drives the length and breadth of California, before crossing borders into Mexico, and also how he circumnavigates the state of Florida in search of a new life for him and his family, as he desperately tries to cling-on to what is left of his failing marriage, before it is too late! ‘Bat out of hell –The Movie’ is a compelling manuscript, taken from diaries written by Shaun during the twenty six months he was out of work –a time when he was completely penniless, and all that he had left to hang on to was a dream –a dream which he was determined to turn into a reality.

Book Portuguese and Luso Asian Legacies in Southeast Asia 1511 2011 vol 2

Download or read book Portuguese and Luso Asian Legacies in Southeast Asia 1511 2011 vol 2 written by Laura Jarnagin and published by Flipside Digital Content Company Inc.. This book was released on 2003-08-01 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "e;In 1511, a Portuguese expedition under the command of Afonso de Albuquerque arrived on the shores of Malacca, taking control of the prosperous Malayan port-city after a swift military campaign. Portugal, a peripheral but then technologically advanced country in southwestern Europe since the latter fifteenth century, had been in the process of establishing solid outposts all along Asia's litoral in order to participate in the most active and profitable maritime trading routes of the day. As it turned out, the Portuguese presence and influence in the Malayan Peninsula and elsewhere in continental and insular Asia expanded far beyond the sphere of commerce and extended over time well into the twenty-first century. Five hundred years later, a conference held in Singapore brought together a large group of scholars from widely different national, academic and disciplinary contexts, to analyse and discuss the intricate consequences of Portuguese interactions in Asia over the longue duree. The result of these discussions is a stimulating set of case studies that, as a rule, combine original archival and/or field research with innovative historiographical perspectives. Luso-Asian communities, real and imagined, and Luso-Asian heritage, material and symbolic, are studied with depth and insight. The range of thematic, chronological and geographic areas covered in these proceeding is truly remarkable, showing not only the extraordinary relevance of revisiting Luso-Asian interactions in the longer term, but also the surprising dynamism within an area of studies which seemed on the verge of exhaustion. After all, archives from all over the world, from Rio de Janeiro to London, from Lisbon to Rome, and from Goa to Macao, might still hold some secrets on the subject of Luso-Asian relations, when duly explored by resourceful scholars."e; - Rui M. Loureiro, Centro de Historia de Alem-Mar, Lisbon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: California Dreaming is a multi-genre collection featuring works by Asian American artists based in California. Exploring the places of “Asian America” through the migration and circulation of the arts, this volume highlights creative processes and the flow of objects to understand the rendering of California’s imaginary. Here, “California” is interpreted as both a specific locale and an identity marker that moves, linking the state’s cultural imaginary, labor, and economy with Asia Pacific, the Americas, and the world. Together, the works in this collection shift previous models and studies of the “Golden State” as the embodiment of “frontier mentality” and the discourse of exceptionality to a translocal, regional, and archipelagic understanding of place and cultural production. The poems, visual essays, short stories, critical essays, interviews, artist statements, and performance text excerpts featured in this collection expand notions of where knowledge is produced, directing our attention to the particularity of California’s landscape and labor in the production of arts and culture. An interdisciplinary collection, California Dreaming foregrounds “sensing” and “imagining” place, vividly, as it hopes to inspire further creative responses to the notion of emplacement. In doing so, California Dreaming explores the possibilities imagined by and through Asian American arts and culture today, paving the way for what is yet to be.
