This book was released on 2023-06-26 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Asia and the Pacific SDG Progress Report 2023 analyses regional and subregional progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and targets. It applies a measurement framework developed by ESCAP to identify progress gaps and acceleration requirements at the goal, target and indicator levels. While there are impressive national accomplishments across the 17 Goals, none of the countries in the region are on track to reach them and overall achievement is much lower than anticipated for the midpoint. One impediment to success is gaps in available data. This report features good practices on data driven approaches for effective implementation of the 2030 Agenda, which provide lessons to countries and can be leveraged to advance sustainable development in the region.

Book Economic and Social Survey of Asia and the Pacific 2020

Download or read book Economic and Social Survey of Asia and the Pacific 2020 written by United Nations Publications and published by . This book was released on 2020-06-04 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic policymaking in Asia-Pacific developing countries has, understandably, long been focused on maximising economic growth, given the imperatives of poverty reduction and job creation. There is no gainsaying that there is a strong case for focusing on economic growth but when this comes at costs that undermine the sustainability of growth itself over the long term, it is time to ask questions. This is evident in the Asia-Pacific region, where decades of high growth have transformed the socioeconomic landscape - lifting a billion people out of extreme poverty and raising living standards of even greater numbers. However, such growth has been accompanied by growing inequality of income and opportunity and is beginning to breach planetary limits, endangering the well-being of future generations. Indeed, according to the ESCAP 2019 report on SDG progress, the Asia-Pacific region is not on track to achieve any of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals by 2030 if we continue on our business-as-usual pathway, and the region has either stagnated or regressed in several environmental Goals. The largest regression is in Responsible Consumption and Production (Goal 12) and this calls for a rethink of the economic growth-centric development model. The 2020 Survey proposes a transition towards sustainable consumption and production, given consumption and production's fundamental role in economic activities and its broad link with social and environmental well-being. Such a transition calls for all stakeholders, namely governments, businesses and consumers, to urgently align their own goals with social and planetary goals through internalizing externalities linked to their actions. The 2020 Survey identifies the constraints that different stakeholders face and provides a holistic policy package to power through the challenges.

Book Sustainable Development Goals and Pandemic Planning

Download or read book Sustainable Development Goals and Pandemic Planning written by Venkatachalam Anbumozhi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-06-10 with total page 745 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book assesses the progress in the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in ASEAN, India and China using the above framework conditions in the context with three main propositions. First, translating the SDGs into regional economic integration strategies during the pandemic recovery can enhance the link between global objectives and the multifaceted reality of an ASEAN community building process, and providing a strategic option to strengthen the regional approaches. Secondly, a regional approach on complementarities to SDGs can facilitate the definition of relevant targets/indicators and enhance the monitoring and evaluation framework. In so doing it could also offer the scope to integrate more closely ASEAN community’s social and environmental concerns into existing economic, social and political frameworks. Thirdly, focusing just on the geo-economic sphere – the area where south east and East Asian economic integration is relatively more advanced – will prove the hypothesis that effective regional integration through mega trade agreements such as the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) can support the Asia’s transformation agenda and foster more inclusive and sustainable growth.

Book The Oxford Handbook of International Law in Asia and the Pacific

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of International Law in Asia and the Pacific written by Simon Chesterman and published by Oxford Handbooks. This book was released on 2019-04-28 with total page 904 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growing economic and political significance of Asia has exposed a tension in the modern international order. Despite expanding power and influence, Asian states have played a minimal role in creating the norms and institutions of international law; today they are the least likely to be parties to international agreements or to be represented in international organizations. That is changing. There is widespread scholarly and practitioner interest in international law at present in the Asia-Pacific region, as well as developments in the practice of states. The change has been driven by threats as well as opportunities. Transnational issues such as climate change and occasional flashpoints like the the territorial disputes of the South China and the East China Seas pose challenges while economic integration and the proliferation of specialized branches of law and dispute settlement mechanisms have also encouraged greater domestic implementation of international norms across Asia. These evolutions join the long-standing interest in parts of Asia (notably South Asia) in post-colonial theory and the history of international law. The Oxford Handbook of International Law in Asia and the Pacific brings together pre-eminent and emerging specialists to analyse the approach to and influence of key states of the region, as well as whether truly 'Asian' trends can be identified and what this might mean for international order.

Available jobs do not fully translate into decent work. The region is home to five of the world's 10 countries most affected by climate risks. Against such a backdrop, bold and wise policies are needed to maintain growth momentum while enhancing the drivers of sustainable development. Book The Oxford Handbook of Higher Education in the Asia Pacific Region

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Higher Education in the Asia Pacific Region written by Devesh Kapur and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-01-26 with total page 977 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the turn of the millennium it has become clear that the Asia-Pacific Region is, economically, the fastest growing continent in the world, and is likely to remain so for some time despite the setbacks of the COVID-19 pandemic. Asia-Pacific's share of the world's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) doubled from 15 per cent to 30 per cent between 1970 and 2017 and is projected to account for half of global GDP by 2050. With South East and South Asia also growing rapidly, with over half the world's population and three of the world's five largest economies, Asia is soon poised to home half of the world's middle class - a class that is both the driver and the product of higher education. The quality of a country's system of higher education may be seen both as a gauge of its current level of national development as well as of its future economic prospects. It is therefore natural that the putative "Asian Century" should generate interest in the region's higher education systems which, on the one hand, share common characteristics-a fixation with credentials and engineering, high technology (especially among male students), and business degrees-while at the same time are also highly differentiated, not only across countries but also within. As such, a better understanding of higher education achievements, failings, potential, and structural limitations in the Asia-Pacific Region is imperative. This handbook presents a number of significant country case-studies and documents cross-cutting trends relating to, among other things: the trilemma faced by governments juggling competing claims of access, accessible cost, and quality; the balance between teaching and research; the links between labour markets (demand) and higher education (supply); preferred fields of study and their consequences; the rise of the research university in Asia; the lure of institutions of international reputation within the region; new education technologies and their effects; and, trends in government policy within the wider region and sub-regions.
