Download or read book Parish Clergy Wives in Elizabethan England written by Anne Thompson and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-02-11 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Parish Clergy Wives in Elizabethan England, Anne Thompson shifts the emphasis from the institution of clerical marriage to the people and personalities involved. Women who have hitherto been defined by their supposed obscurity and unsuitability are shown to have anticipated and exhibited the character, virtues, and duties associated with the archetypal clergy wife of later centuries. Through adept use of an extensive and eclectic range of archival material, this book offers insights into the perception and lived experience of ministers’ wives. In challenging accepted views on the social status of clergy wives and their role and reception within the community, new light is thrown on a neglected but crucial aspect of religious, social, and women’s history.
Download or read book Northamptonshire written by Nikolaus Pevsner and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some of England's grandest country houses are to be found in this prosperous rural midland county with its excellent local building stone from the limestone belt. The Elizabethan Renaissance Kirby Hall, the late seventeenth century French-inspired Boughton, Hawksmoor's stately Baroque Easton Neston and the interiors of Althorp provide a fascinating survey of changing taste through the centuries. The great houses are complemented by smaller buildings of great character, supreme among them Sir Thomas Tresham's eccentric and ingenious Triangular Lodge at Rushton. Of no less interest in this county of "spires and squires" are the fine village churches, from Early Saxon Brixworth to the noble early Gothic buildings which so inspired the Victorians.

Download or read book WILL I SEE YOU TOMORROW written by Colin Lederman and published by Gatekeeper Press. This book was released on 2021-08-05 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My name now is Max Fine. My parents named me Maxwell so for many years I was known as Maxwell Feinstein. Whilst sitting on my balcony, observing the sun slip away slowly below the horizon, I ruminate about my past life and how much longer I have in this world. I was born in South Africa to German Jewish parents after the family escaped from Germany in 1936. I am writing this book as my ultimate legacy. I am dying from a severe case of congenital heart disease for which there is no cure. Only a heart transplant can save me. At my age? I have my thoughts and memories. Both are fully functional but may be somewhat fanciful. The story is about my family and me. I retell some events that happened (or at least that I believe happened) over several generations. Naturally, I was not present at every event so, to that extent, these are either hearsay or my interpretational memories. I make no apology for spending time on my gap year before attending university since it was one of my most enjoyable times, if not the best. I was a naïve 17-year-old, seeing the world for the first time. In those few months, I became a man.
