Download or read book Zechariah 9 14 written by Paul L. Redditt and published by Kohlhammer Verlag. This book was released on 2012-10-31 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It will be argued that Zechariah 9-14 consists of four collections of traditional eschatological hope (9:1-17; 10:3b-12; 12:1-4a, 5, 8-9; and 14:1-13, 14b-21). Of the collections, the first three included hopes vital during the first half of the Persian period. The fourth collection (chapter 14) seems to have arisen later than the other three (though still before the time of Nehemiah) and expressed much more pessimism. These variations were then supplemented by a collection (12:6-7; 12:10-13:6) that is pro-Judean vis-à-vis Jerusalem and by the shepherd materials, which contradict the hopes of the first two collections. This final stage probably arose after the time of Nehemiah, i. e. after the city grew strong enough to raise the ire of Judeans outside the power structure. It is plausible to conclude, therefore, that the redactor of Zechariah 9-14 assembled the four collections and revised them by means of the supplements in 12:6-7, 12:10-13:6 and the shepherd materials.

Book Zechariah s Hope Paperback

Download or read book Zechariah s Hope Paperback written by David C Coldwell and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2018-01-24 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book of Zechariah may be one of the least read books in the Bible. For the past twenty years I have taught the Bible to pastors in Asian countries where life is difficult for them. My pattern was to begin each day with a devotional that would apply specific Bible lessons to their lives. When I started giving devotional thoughts from Zechariah, I learned that the Asian pastors had a keen interest in that prophet. They would often ask questions or share their thoughts about Zechariah long after our devotional had ended. I believe that a daily time with the Lord is essential for believers who desire to serve Him in this knotty world. According to Proverbs, life is a series of choices between which roads we will travel. We decide daily to either take the path of the righteous or the way of the wicked. We choose regularly to either walk on the path of the wise person or stroll along the way of the fool.

Book Multilingualism in Ancient Contexts

Download or read book Multilingualism in Ancient Contexts written by Louis C. Jonker and published by African Sun Media. This book was released on 2021-05-03 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multilingualism remains a thorny issue in many contexts, be it cultural, political, or educational. Debates and discourses on this issue in contexts of diversity (particularly in multicultural societies, but also in immigration situations) are often conducted with present-day communicational and educational needs in mind, or with political and identity agendas. This is nothing new. There are a vast number of witnesses from the ancient West-Asian and Mediterranean world attesting to the same debates in long past societies. Could an investigation into the linguistic landscapes of ancient societies shed any light on our present-day debates and discourses? This volume suggests that this is indeed the case. In fourteen chapters, written and visual sources of the ancient world are investigated and explored by scholars, specialising in those fields of study, to engage in an interdisciplinary discourse with modern-day debates about multilingualism. A final chapter – by an expert in language in education – responds critically to the contributions in the book to open avenues for further interdisciplinary engagement – together with contemporary linguists and educationists – on the matter of multilingualism.

Book The Non Israelite Nations in the Book of the Twelve

Download or read book The Non Israelite Nations in the Book of the Twelve written by Daniel Timmer and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-08-11 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Non-Israelite Nations in the Book of the Twelve Daniel Timmer offers the first comprehensive survey of the ‘nations’ in the Minor Prophets. The study approaches this important but highly diverse theme through the lens of conceptual coherence and demonstrates the interrelation of synchronic/holistic and diachronic/compositional approaches. After exploring the theme in each of the individual books of the Twelve and noting the varying degrees of coherence evident in each case, Timmer brings his findings to bear on contemporary understandings of the Twelve as a collection, arguing for the theme’s coherence across the collection on the basis of each book’s unique treatment of the nations.

Book The Rewritten Joshua Scrolls from Qumran

Download or read book The Rewritten Joshua Scrolls from Qumran written by Ariel Feldman and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2013-11-27 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In addition to three scrolls containing the Book of Joshua, the Qumran caves brought to light five previously unknown texts rewriting this book. These scrolls (4Q123, 4Q378, 4Q379, 4Q522, 5Q9), as well as a scroll from Masada (Mas 1039–211), are commonly referred to as the Apocryphon of Joshua. While each of these manuscripts has received some scholarly attention, no attempt has yet been made to offer a detailed study of all these texts. The present monograph fills this gap by providing improved editions of the six scrolls, an up-to-date commentary and a detailed discussion of the biblical exegesis embedded in each scroll. The analysis of the texts is followed by a reassessment of the widely accepted view considering 4Q123, 4Q378, 4Q379, 4Q522, 5Q9 and Mas 1039–211 as copies of a single composition. Finally, the monograph attempts to place the Qumran scrolls rewriting the Book of Joshua within the wider context of Second Temple Jewish writings concerned with the figure of Joshua.

Book First Second Samuel Everyman s Bible Commentary

Download or read book First Second Samuel Everyman s Bible Commentary written by Carl Laney and published by Moody Publishers. This book was released on 1982-02-09 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The books of Samuel focus on the lives of three men: Samuel, Saul, and David. They are first seen as individuals rising in their respective careers. As time passes, their lives more frequently interact and become interwined with each other. J. Carl Laney covers these two books section by section, often pausing to clear up a difficult passage that would mean trouble to the reader. This volume is complete with many maps that prove to be an invaluable aid to the reader in helping him to plot out where the action of a particular chapter is taking place. Dr. Laney helps the reader to understand the anguish and agony David experienced as a result of the division of his household and the rebellion of his son Absalom. We can see how Saul met his ultimate downfall as king because of his reliance upon outside sources for guidance instead of implicitly trusting in the Lord. One also sees the godly Samuel who, nevertheless, was unable to keep his own household in order. Contemporary lessons are plentiful in these two Bible books and available to those who take the time to study their truths.
