Book The Birth of the Palestinian Refugee Problem 1947 1949

Download or read book The Birth of the Palestinian Refugee Problem 1947 1949 written by Benny Morris and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1989-02-24 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first full-length study of the birth of the Palestinian refugee problem. Based on recently declassified Israeli, British and American state and party political papers and on hitherto untapped private papers, it traces the stages of the 1947-9 exodus against the backdrop of the first Arab-Israeli war and analyses the varied causes of the flight. The Jewish and Arab decision-making involved, on national and local levels, military and political, is described and explained, as is the crystallisation of Israel's decision to bar a refugee repatriation. The subsequent fate of the abandoned Arab villages, lands and urban neighbourhoods is examined. The study looks at the international context of the war and the exodus, and describes the political battle over the refugees' fate, which effectively ended with the deadlock at Lausanne in summer 1949. Throughout the book attempts to describe what happened rather than what successive generations of Israeli and Arab propagandists have said happened, and to explain the motives of the protagonists.

Book The Australian Ugliness

Download or read book The Australian Ugliness written by Robin Boyd and published by Text Publishing. This book was released on 2010-03-29 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fifty years after its first publication, Robin Boyd's bestselling The Australian Ugliness remains the definitive statement on how we live and think in the environments we create for ourselves. In it Boyd rallied against Australia's promotion of ornament, decorative approach to design and slavish imitation of all things American. 'The basis of the Australian ugliness,' he wrote, 'is an unwillingness to be committed on the level of ideas. In all the arts of living, in the shaping of all her artefacts, as in politics, Australia shuffles about vigorously in the middle - as she estimates the middle - of the road, picking up disconnected ideas wherever she finds them.' Boyd was a fierce critic, and an advocate of good design. He understood the significance of the connection between people and their dwellings, and argued passionately for a national architecture forged from a genuine Australian identity. His concerns are as important now, in an era of suburban sprawl and inner-city redevelopment, as they were half a century ago. Caustic and brilliant, The Australian Ugliness is a masterpiece that enables us to see our surroundings with fresh eyes. This handsome anniversary edition is complemented by Robin Boyd's original sketches for the book and a new afterword by major contemporary architects.

Book Contemporary Australian Drawing

Download or read book Contemporary Australian Drawing written by Janet McKenzie and published by Macmillan Art Pub. This book was released on 2012 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scotland-based Dr Janet McKenzie, long-term deputy editor of the renowned art journal Studio International, first published on Australian drawing with Macmillan back in 1986. Twenty-one years later she met Dr Irene Barberis, an Australian artist who was in the UK representing Metasenta, an international arts research organisation focused on drawing and based at Melbournes RMIT University. Dr Christopher Heathcote's contribution also focuses on the teaching of drawing in Australia. Janet McKenzie visited Australia in 2008 to update her research and exercise a global perspective on the current state of drawing in this country. Her book introduces works by 78 selected artists from across the country. They include prominent figures such as Peter Booth, Allan Mitelman, John Olsen, Mirka Mora, Mike Parr, Kevin Lincoln, Jenny Watson, Jan Senbergs and Wendy Stavrianos, among many others. Recognition of the importance of drawing has sometimes wavered in recent times, but most artists would agree that drawing, in whatever medium and however it is executed, is an essential process in the development of ideas leading to creative outcomes. Often, as art history suggests and this book demonstrates, drawing can be an art in and of itself. This timely account of the art of drawing in Australia is lavishly illustrated and will have wide appeal.

The name of each community is accompanied by information about it: when it was founded, the Jewish population in different years, shops and synagogues, and the names of citizens. An appendix locates each town on a map of Lithuania. Since most of the Jewish communities in Lithuania were destroyed in the Holocaust, this volume will be a valuable tool in recreating a picture of Lithuanian Jewry.

Book Hebron Jews

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jerold S. Auerbach
  • Publisher : Rowman & Littlefield Publishers
  • Release : 2009-07-16
  • ISBN : 074256617X
  • Pages : 241 pages

Download or read book Hebron Jews written by Jerold S. Auerbach and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2009-07-16 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this first comprehensive history in English of the Jews of Hebron, Jerold S. Auerbach explores one of the oldest and most vilified Jewish communities in the world. Spanning three thousand years, from the biblical narrative of Abraham's purchase of a burial cave for Sarah to the violent present, it offers a controversial analysis of a community located at the crossroads of the Israeli-Palestinian struggle over national boundaries and the internal Israeli struggle over the meaning of Jewish statehood. Hebron Jews sharply challenges conventional Zionist historiography and current media understanding by presenting a community of memory deeply embedded in Zionist history and Jewish tradition. Auerbach shows how the blending of religion and nationalism_Orthodoxy and Zionism_embodied in Hebron Jews is at the core of the struggle within Israel to define the meaning of a Jewish state.

Book Shared Heritage Revisited

Download or read book Shared Heritage Revisited written by Dalya Yafa Markovich and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2024-05-31 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Culture is constructed, negotiated, managed, and shared by various ideological, political, and moral reasonings which manifest themselves tangibly and intangibly in public monuments, architecture, memorial sites, theaters, museums, orchestras, and heritage associations. The contributions to this volume explore the intersection of cultural heritage and nationality in societies that are characterized by national, multi-national, and post-national concepts. They question the roles that cultural heritage plays in its various contexts, and the ways in which ideology functions to produce it.
