Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The true pioneers in electronic publishing put their bibliographic databases on tape and online in the 1960s. Nearly all of them had long experience with compiling information for distribution in printed form and a strong market connection. As a result of Soviet advances in science and space technology, American government support for information science and academic libraries flowed freely for a little over a decade, making possible tremendous advances in technology, in retrieval techniques and in sophisticated coverage. Advances in information technology and market conditions have encouraged many more participants to underwrite the development of databases that now extend into the arts, social sciences, business, and popular interests. These essays show how production statistics accompanied by statements of editorial coverage provide a fairly accurate reflection of output of many of the major disciplinary bibliographic databases. The urgent priority of information resources in the 1960s has encouraged comprehensive servicing of the formal research literature as published in journals and monographs. Authors have counted subject words, languages, origins, types of publication, and so on over several decades. This volume also includes articles on some databases that are not strictly bibliographic, such as the CMG database of college courses, which illuminates some of the changes in college textbook publishing. Information seekers will find the many tables of practical use, as guidance to what and how much may be found within each database. Analysts of publishing, of science policy, and of higher education will find information relevant to expenditures, human resources, and other indicators of education, research, and technology activity.

This book was released on 2023-03-13 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document presents the report of the 2022 ASFA Advisory Board Meeting (ABM), which took place virtually from 12 to 14?September, with a final session on the ASFA business model taking place on 23 November. Though ASFA has been in a period of transition since the need for a new business model was identified in 2018, progress has been made in recent years in the areas of technologies, with the launch of OpenASFA and migration of the Subject Vocabulary to AGROVOC, and communications, with working groups now meeting regularly and the ASFA magazine published twice yearly. Despite these improvements, doubt remains as to ASFA’s future with a need to prove the usefulness of the information network in an age of rapidly changing technologies and demands from users for information to be free and quick to access. Discussions on these topics, as well as the financial situation, were held at the 2022 ABM with decisions taken that will help ASFA adopt a new business model. These decisions include approval of a revised partnership agreement, improvements to the ASFA regional networks and working groups as well as support for training, communications and promotional materials that will help ASFA to launch a recruitment drive in 2023 and to re-engage with currently inactive partners.

Book excerpt: This document presents the report of the 2021 ASFA Advisory Board Meeting, which took place 13–17 September 2021. Though conducted virtually, the meeting provided a platform for lively discussions with ideas proposed that will benefit ASFA as it continues its transition to an open information network focused on meeting the needs of aquatic science, fisheries and aquaculture stakeholders. Agreement was reached on a number of key areas for ASFA, including: plans to cover datasets; features and improvements to OpenASFA; changes to the structure of Working Groups and Regional Networks; and how to plan and communicate events in 2022. Notwithstanding the progress made in individual areas of ASFA, it was the overall enthusiasm and expertise of ASFA’s partners that most significantly contributed to the success of the meeting. The FAO ASFA Secretariat would therefore like to thank all ASFA Partners, Collaborating Centres and Associates who participated in the meeting. Supporting papers are available as Annexes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholarly journals are the capillaries of the scientific world, ensuring the circulation of knowledge. Moreover, scholarly journals guide and indicate the scientific development in an academic field of study or in a country. Scholarly journals, which transfer and spread scientific information, are intended to properly fulfill their functions, preventing the transfer of imperfect or incorrect information to the science world. Significant issues are, therefore, inevitable in the characteristics of scientific studies in such disciplines and countries where the scholarly journals do not fulfill their functions properly. This study encompasses all scholarly journals published in Turkey in all fields of science and other disciplines. The reference questions in this study are grouped under three main categories: the contact and publication information, article evaluation, and publishing information. The number of journals in this present study totals 1,910.

Download or read book Enabling grey literature discovery to benefit aquatic science fisheries and aquaculture 25 September 2019 Terengganu Malaysia written by Vicary, T., Kalentsits, M. and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2021-09-24 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grey literature, which includes policy reports, technical guidelines and dissertations and theses, is produced by many actors within aquatic sciences, fisheries and aquaculture. Many hours of research go into producing these documents, often with the purpose of solving particular environmental, species or socio-economic problems. Whilst the nature of the problem tackled by much grey literature is focused on a specific problem in a specific area, its lessons can often be applied to similar problems or environments around the world. What prevents this taking place is that grey literature can be hard to access – due to the way it is produced and stored, grey literature can often be stored offline, or on institutional websites where it is difficult to access using internet search engines or databases.
Download or read book Identification and analysis of marine fisheries research Case studies from selected countries in the Fishery Committee for the Eastern Central Atlantic CECAF area of competence written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2022-03-01 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During 2020, the ASFA Secretariat supported the CECAF-PESCAO project by compiling an inventory of marine fisheries research produced in nine countries (Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea, Mauritania, Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal, Spain). A search methodology was agreed with the CECAF project team, with support from the EAF-Nansen Programme to identify relevant marine fisheries research. Further parameters, including publication date and author affiliation, were defined in order to conduct systematic and repeatable searches. In the first stage, online searches were conducted using four sources (ASFA, Google Scholar, Web of Science and Scopus). The second stage involved searching local and nationally held collections (library catalogues, institutional websites or repositories) to identify further references. The results from these searches were then combined to produce an inventory of 2 411 unique references. A bibliometric analysis was then conducted on the inventory which revealed intensive publishing activity and strong collaboration across the region, however publishing in predatory journals and difficulty in locating grey literature on online sources were areas where further work is needed to ensure research produced in the area reaches a wide audience. A detailed analysis of research published by authors affiliated to Senegalese institutions was conducted which revealed a significant gender imbalance of authors (only 13 percent of authors identified in the study were female). Recommendations included in this report are to expand the inventory and analysis to other CECAF member countries and to take steps to ensure the grey literature produced by authors from the CECAF region is indexed by online sources.
