The analysis in most instances will concentrate on major commodities such as cocoa, coconut oil, coffee, cotton, jute, palm oil, rice, natural rubber, tea and timber. This does not, however, preclude the application of many of the generalizations given here to the minor commodities whose export earnngs from these export earnings are generally less than those of the other commodities such as sugar, tapioca, pepper, coconut, maize, fruits and vegetables, etc. Further, this study will not cover fuels, minerals and metals, animal products and fishery products as their trading patterns may differ from agricultural commodities based on trees and plants. Moreover, steps which individual countries could initiate independently for the development of their primary commodity trade have been left out as they comprise a separate area of study.

Book excerpt: We assess food trade among and across two Asian trading blocs, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), and China. Using most recent innovations in the empirical trade model, we find subpar trade for several countries but some over-trading as well, likely driven by weak economic fundamentals determining trade. Further, we find that Bangladesh, Philippines, Sri Lanka, and Viet Nam under-export to China, and to nearly all ASEAN and SAARC countries, with the magnitude varying between 40 and 100 percent below the predicted trade levels. While checking for competing explanations, we identify trading pair time variant factors such as tariffs reducing the magnitude of under-exporting of ASEAN and SAARC countries by 1 and 3 percent, respectively. We also highlight unobserved variables such as trust between countries as factors important for strong agricultural trade.

Book excerpt: As Globalisation and regionalism gained its momentum from the beginning of 1980s and the gain from open trade is realised by the pioneer East Asian nations (especially, the ASEAN countries), the South Asian countries also tried to catch up with the stream under the banner of South Asian Association of Regional Cooperation (SAARC). The objective of the study is to assess the liberalisation efforts by these nations. Our empirical results in terms of trade among the regional group suggest that the smaller countries, namely Bangladesh and Sri Lanka reap the higher gains from openness, whereas trade with other international partners, it took India and Bangladesh to gain international competitiveness until mid 1990s. Our study indicates Pakistan and Sri Lanka's trade liberalisation efforts don't seem to have much positive impact in terms of international trade.

Book excerpt: The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is strategically significant because of its size, dynamism, and role in the Asian economic and security architectures. This paper examines how ASEAN seeks to strengthen these assets through "centrality" in intraregional and external policy decisions. It recommends a two-speed approach toward centrality in order to maximize regional incomes and benefit all member economies: first, selective engagement by ASEAN members in productive external partnerships and, second, vigorous policies to share gains across the region. This strategy has solid underpinnings in the Kemp-Wan theorem on trade agreements. It would warrant, for example, a Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement with incomplete ASEAN membership, complemented with policies to extend gains across the region. The United States could support this framework by pursuing deep relations with some ASEAN members, while broadly assisting the region's development.
