Book ASEAN Centrality and the ASEAN US Economic Relationship

Download or read book ASEAN Centrality and the ASEAN US Economic Relationship written by Peter A. Petri and published by . This book was released on 2014-02-21 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is strategically significant because of its size, dynamism, and role in the Asian economic and security architectures. This paper examines how ASEAN seeks to strengthen these assets through "centrality" in intraregional and external policy decisions. It recommends a two-speed approach toward centrality in order to maximize regional incomes and benefit all member economies: first, selective engagement by ASEAN members in productive external partnerships and, second, vigorous policies to share gains across the region. This strategy has solid underpinnings in the Kemp-Wan theorem on trade agreements. It would warrant, for example, a Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement with incomplete ASEAN membership, complemented with policies to extend gains across the region. The United States could support this framework by pursuing deep relations with some ASEAN members, while broadly assisting the region's development.

Book The 3rd ASEAN Reader

Download or read book The 3rd ASEAN Reader written by Ooi Kee Beng and published by ISEAS - YUSOF ISHAK INSTITUTE. This book was released on 2015-08-24 with total page 511 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past two decades, ISEAS has compiled abridged articles that analyse key aspects of Southeast Asia’s development and the ASEAN process. The ASEAN Reader was published in 1992 just as the Cold War ended, while The Second ASEAN Reader came in 2003 in the wake of the 1997 Asian crisis and the September 11 attacks in 2001. The past decade has not been spared its share of intense changes, with the rise of China and India bringing new challenges to the region’s power equation, and the impact of the 2008 global financial crisis. Despite this, the momentum towards an integrated ASEAN community has been maintained. The articles in The Third ASEAN Reader study the trends and events of recent years, and discuss the immediate future of Southeast Asia.

Book East Asia at a Crossroads

Download or read book East Asia at a Crossroads written by Jusuf Wanandi and published by . This book was released on 2008-03 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Efforts to build an East Asia community have gained momentum over the past decade. In a period of dynamic change and shifting balances of power, regional leaders seek to strengthen cooperation and stabilize relations between countries. While community building is still at an early stage, there is a growing sense it has reached a historic crossroads: it can be further advanced or alternatively succumb to the region's many disparities and emerging rivalries. In E ast Asia at a Crossroads, leading policy experts from inside and outside the region analyze the dynamics of community building. The contributors propose ways of moving forward to enhance regional peace and prosperity while strengthening East Asia's capacity to meet its growing global responsibilities. Contributors include Jesus Estanislao (Institute of Corporate Directors and the Institute for Solidarity in Asia), Carolina G. Hernandez (University of the Philippines and Institute for Strategic and Development Studies), Frank Jannuzi (U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations), Karl Kaiser (Harvard University), Qin Yaqing (China Foreign Affairs University), Rizal Sukma (CSIS Jakarta), and Hitoshi Tanaka (JCIE).

  • Author : ADBI
  • Publisher : Brookings Institution Press
  • Release : 2016-03-08
  • ISBN : 4899740522
  • Pages : 340 pages

Download or read book ASEAN 2030 written by ADBI and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2016-03-08 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates long-term development issues for members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). It finds that with the proper policy mix—including domestic structural reforms and bold initiatives for regional integration—ASEAN has the potential to reach by 2030 the average quality of life enjoyed today in advanced economies and to fulfill its aspirations to become a resilient, inclusive, competitive, and harmonious (RICH) region. Key challenges moving forward are to enhance macroeconomic and financial stability, support equitable growth, promote competitiveness and innovation, and protect the environment. Overcoming these challenges to build a truly borderless economic region implies eliminating remaining barriers to the flow of goods, services, and production factors; strengthening competitiveness and the institutional framework; and updating some governing principles. But ASEAN should not merely copy the European Union. It must maintain its flexibility and pragmatism without creating a bloated regional bureaucracy. The study’s main message is that through closer integration, ASEAN can form a partnership for achieving shared prosperity in the region and around the globe.
