Book Senza Vestimenta The Literary Tradition of Trecento Song

Download or read book Senza Vestimenta The Literary Tradition of Trecento Song written by Lauren Jennings and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-01 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The metaphor of marriage often describes the relationship between poetry and music in both medieval and modern writing. While the troubadours stand out for their tendency to blur the distinction between speaking and singing, between poetry and song, a certain degree of semantic slippage extends into the realm of Italian literature through the use of genre names like canzone, sonetto, and ballata. Yet, paradoxically, scholars have traditionally identified a 'divorce' between music and poetry as the defining feature of early Italian lyric. Senza Vestimenta reintegrates poetic and musical traditions in late medieval Italy through a fresh evaluation of more than fifty literary sources transmitting Trecento song texts. These manuscripts have been long noted by musicologists, but until now they have been used to bolster rather than to debunk the notion that so-called 'poesia per musica' was relegated to the margins of poetic production. Jennings revises this view by exploring how scribes and readers interacted with song as a fundamentally interdisciplinary art form within a broad range of literary settings. Her study sheds light on the broader cultural world surrounding the reception of the Italian ars nova repertoire by uncovering new, diverse readers ranging from wealthy merchants to modest artisans.

Book Italian Weights and Measures from the Middle Ages to the Nineteenth Century

Download or read book Italian Weights and Measures from the Middle Ages to the Nineteenth Century written by Ronald Edward Zupko and published by American Philosophical Society. This book was released on 1981 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlike most metrological systems throughout W. Europe, the Italian developed during the Middle Ages (MA) & Early Modern era without any ref. to a commonly accepted set of nat.-ethnic standards. Italy, with its many kingdoms, duchies, communes, etc., was never able to attain any level of metrological standardization outside the confines of severely restricted, small, independent, political jurisdictions. Not until unification in 1871, were Italian weights & measures (W&M) given a totally nat. character. And it was the metric system, & not a conglomerate of units from the old, that finally accomplished the task. This book presents a quantitative compilation, synthesis, & analysis of the principal pre-metric W&M employed throughout Italy & in those areas controlled or influenced by Italy from the Later MA to the age of metrication in the later 19th cent. Tables.

And yet, verdant hillsides ripple with vineyards and olive groves. The dramatic blue Sibillini Mountains shelter shepherds, freedom fighters, and necromancers. Lined with palms and orange trees, the luxurious Adriatic coast is monitored by medieval towers and pagan temples. This is the Land of Piceno--Le Marche, Italy--whose founding symbol, Picus, sacred woodpecker of Mars, guides us through the vicissitudes of time.

Book The Peoples of Ancient Italy

    Book Details:
  • Author : Gary D. Farney
  • Publisher : Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG
  • Release : 2017-11-20
  • ISBN : 1501500147
  • Pages : 856 pages

Download or read book The Peoples of Ancient Italy written by Gary D. Farney and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2017-11-20 with total page 856 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although there are many studies of certain individual ancient Italic groups (e.g. the Etruscans, Gauls and Latins), there is no work that takes a comprehensive view of each of them—the famous and the less well-known—that existed in Iron Age and Roman Italy. Moreover, many previous studies have focused only on the material evidence for these groups or on what the literary sources have to say about them. This handbook is conceived of as a resource for archaeologists, historians, philologists and other scholars interested in finding out more about Italic groups from the earliest period they are detectable (early Iron Age, in most instances), down to the time when they begin to assimilate into the Roman state (in the late Republican or early Imperial period). As such, it will endeavor to include both archaeological and historical perspectives on each group, with contributions from the best-known or up-and-coming archaeologists and historians for these peoples and topics. The language of the volume is English, but scholars from around the world have contributed to it. This volume covers the ancient peoples of Italy more comprehensively in individual chapters, and it is also distinct because it has a thematic section.
