Book excerpt: "Way of the Ascetics is a rich, compact introduction for modern readers to the Eastern Christian spiritual tradition that has been an inspiration to millions for centuries. These compassionate and insightful reflections on self-control and inner peace are meant to lead the readers to fuller union with God. The author makes a generous selection of succinct yet profound extracts from the spiritual Fathers and provides an illuminating commentary and practical applications for daily devotion. He tempers austerity with common sense, warmth, and even humor, as he urges us on our journey toward God. Written for lay persons living fully in the world as much as for clergy, Way of the Ascetics is an excellent resource for daily meditation, authentic spiritual guidance, and a revitalized religious life."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book excerpt: Asceticism, so it is argued in this volume, is a modern category. The ubiquitous cult of the body, of fitness and diet equally evokes the ongoing success of ascetic practices and beliefs. Nostalgic memories of hardship and discipline in the army, youth movements or boarding schools remain as present as the fashionable irritation with the presumed modern-day laziness. In the very texture of contemporary culture, age-old asceticism proves to be remarkably alive. Old ascetic forms were remoulded to serve modern desires for personal authenticity, an authenticity that disconnected asceticism in the course of the nineteenth century from two traditions that had underpinned it since classical antiquity: the public, republican austerity of antiquity and the private, religious asceticism of Christianity. Exploring various aspects such as the history of the body, of aesthetics, science, and social thought in several European countries (Great Britain, France, Germany, Austria and Belgium), the authors show that modern asceticism remains a deeply ambivalent category. Apart from self-realisation, classical and religious examples continue to haunt the ascetic mind.

Book Shalya

Book excerpt: In one of the most famous passages in Maha·bhárata, Dur·yódhana, the heroic but flawed king of the Káuravas, meets his end when he is dishonorably defeated in battle by his arch-enemy, Bhima. Framing a fascinating account of the sacred sites along the river Sarásvati, the duel poignantly portrays the downfall of a once great hero in the face of a new order governed by Krishna, in which the warrior code is brushed aside in order to ensure the predestined triumph of the Pándavas. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are satisfied with these extracts from the Holy Fathers, which satisfactorily explain the making of the prayer of Jesus. Other Father's writings set forth the same teaching. We acknowledge it necessary to repeat our beloved fathers and brethren the warning that they should not rush to read the Fathers' writings about the exalted deeds and monastic states, although curiosity entails this reading, although this reading produces pleasure and delight. Our freedom, by the nature of time, must be especially limited. When there were blessed mentors, then the hobbies of the novices were conveniently noticed and healed. But now there is no one to heal, nor to notice hobbies. Often addiction is recognized by inexperienced mentors as a great success, the enthusiast is encouraged to be more passionate. Passion, acting on a monk and not being noticed, continues to act, to deviate him more and more from the true direction. It can be accurately said: the majority is in a diverse hobby, there are very few who have rejected their hobby and hobbies, there are no people who are not involved. For this reason, when the Fathers' books were left to us as the only means of leadership, we should read them with extreme caution and legibility, so that the only way to guide them would not turn into a means of incorrect activity and the resulting disorder. "We will search," says St. John Climacus about the choice of a mentor, "not foreknowing, not perspicacious, but most of all precisely-humble wise, most appropriate to the illness that embraces us, according to our morality and place of residence" the majority is in a diverse hobby, who rejected their hobby and very few hobbies, there are no addicts. The same should be said about books, as already mentioned above: they should choose from them not the most exalted, but closest to our state, setting forth the work peculiar to us.
