Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ascent Perhaps the fact that this is a last vantage point makes more poignant one's sense of a wider and darker country beyond. The summit itself, with its split rocks and its faint show of a stunted underbrush, is the first to show the complete immunity of a region which is still a wilderness. The last farm runs out into stubble three miles back and the last road ends at its base. The glimpses of habitation, in the country immediately below, are reminders that the progression of the seasons, in the valley which must deepen to green and redden to brown under their touch, leaves the monotony of the upland unbroken. It seems beyond the sequences in the circle of fulfilment; and the picture one most readily forms of it is with the moving drift, across its barren face, of a perpetual snow, falling with the same immensity as the immensity of the skies. In ancient days the cliffs outside of J eru salem were the battle-ground for many war ring Chieftains. They have witnessed so much bloodshed that they have been rightly called the Red Ascent.' But cannot the path of every man, who struggles to attain the heights of idealism, be likened to that bloody road? The reading stopped abruptly. The heavy chairs were pushed back noisily from the table, the students rose, and murmuring a short thanksgiving, they filed out of the dining-room. Richard leaned over and whispered to the man in front of him. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Ascent of Denali Mount McKinley

Download or read book The Ascent of Denali Mount McKinley written by Hudson Stuck and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ascent of Denali (Mount McKinley): A Narrative of the First Complete Ascent of the Highest Peak in North America Forefront in this book, because forefront in the author's heart and desire, must stand a plea for the restoration to the greatest mountain in North America of its immemorial native name. If there be any prestige or authority in such matter from the accomplishment of a first complete ascent, "if there be any virtue, if there be any praise," the author values it chiefly as it may give weight to this plea. It is now little more than seventeen years ago that a prospector penetrated from the south into the neighborhood of this mountain, guessed its height with remarkable accuracy at twenty thousand feet, and, ignorant of any name that it already bore, placed upon it the name of the Republican candidate for President of the United States at the approaching election - William McKinley. No voice was raised in protest, for the Alaskan Indian is inarticulate and such white men as knew the old name were absorbed in the search for gold. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ascent to the Summit of Mont Blanc in 1834 A Short account of this ascent of Mont Blanc was published in the Edinburgh New Philosophical Journal, Vol. xviii. No. 35; beyond which, - with the interesting narrative by Auldjo already before the public, - it was not proposed to extend it. But having since been made the subject of two lectures, - in preparing which, some information was collected, likely to be found generally useful, - and as any contribution seems allowable, on the subject of a track so few have taken, - the narrative is now published in a separate form. The following pages contain the lectures nearly as delivered; with the addition of a short account of the early attempts to reach the summit of Mont Blanc. Book The Lowell Lectures on the Ascent of Man Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Lowell Lectures on the Ascent of Man Classic Reprint written by Henry Drummond and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lowell Lectures on the Ascent of Man "The more I think of it," says Ruskin," I find this conclusion more impressed upon me - that the greatest thing a human soul ever does in this world is to see something, and tell what it saw in a plain way." In these pages an attempt is made to tell "in a plain way" a few of the things which Science is now seeing with regard to the Ascent of Man. Whether these seeings are there at all is another matter. But, even if visions, every thinking mind, through whatever medium, should look at them. What Science has to say about himself is of transcendent interest to Man, and the practical bearings of this theme are coming to he more vital than any on the field of knowledge. The thread which binds the facts is, it is true, but a hypothesis. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Summer Months Among the Alps: With the Ascent of Monte Rosa The materials have been collected from a complete journal which I kept in 1855, when Mr. W. Dundas accompanied me throughout nearly the whole of the journey, and from notes taken and letters written in 1856, when, with my brother and a friend, I visited the valleys and mountain passes to the south and east of Monte Rosa, in addition to retracing my steps over a great deal of old ground. My object has been to describe, at some length, the grander and wilder features of the scenery, and some of the most interesting and exciting of the expeditions which I have had the good fortune to make successfully; passing over the less magnificent, but more beaten, routes with only such notice as is necessary to preserve the continuity of the march, and to enable a reader to follow my course without difficulty. Book The Ascent of Olympus Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Ascent of Olympus Classic Reprint written by Rendel Harris and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-25 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ascent of Olympus His volume contains four lectures which were delivered in the John Rylands Library, Manchester, during the years l9 5 and 1916, and which appeared at intervals in the Library Bulletins. They are reproduced as nearly as possible in their original form, with a few.necessary corrections and expansions and justifications. It would have been easy to spread them over a much larger area but perhaps they may suffice for the presentation of ideas which are to some extent novel, and, almost as certainly, to some persons distasteful. On the one hand, I have to meet the criticism of my wise friend, and inspiring leader, who is priest of the mythological Nemi and guardian of its Golden Bough, until someone catches him unawares and dispossesses him. He tells me that he despairs of the solution of the riddle of the Greek Mythology, he who does not despair (and with better right than Haeclrel) of the solution of the riddle of the Universe 1 On the other hand, there are those who, having unfortunately been familiar with the Greek gods from their earliest years, and never really detached from traditional faith in them, cannot avoid contemplat ing the author of these lectures as an lconoclast, and put upon him the task, under which Socrates as well as the early Christians alike laboured, of proving to a suspicious bench of magistrates that they were really not atheists. So far from this being the case, it may be hoped that when one succeeds, if one does succeed, in evolving Artemis out of a wayside weed, or Aphrodite out of a cabbage, and, in general, all things lovely out of things that are not at first sight beautiful, one may claim to belong to the brotherhood, whatever its name may be, that has the vision of That far-off divine event To which the whole creation moves.
