Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My Sister’s Diary is a hearttouching story of a very strong, passionate woman who endured the hardships of cerebral palsy for seventy-nine years. After Carolyn’s death, Carolyn’s sister, Nancy, read and gleaned amazing facts and feelings from Carolyn’s diaries of sixty-five years. Life started with a premature birth. School days were difficult, but Carolyn persisted in a school for the handicapped. After graduation from high school, Carolyn worked at the Sheltered Workshop in Binghamton. A later decline in her condition triggered her family to pursue a patterning program through the Institute for Human Potential. Carolyn’s improvement was remarkable. After her father’s death, Carolyn and her mother moved to Arizona to be close to family. Life was good for them until declining health took the life of her mother. After this, life for Carolyn was most difficult in Medicaid-assisted living facilities. She endured care that bordered on verbal and physical abuse. Three male aids cared deeply for Carolyn and gave her a reason to live. Carolyn felt like many abuse victims do—that she was guilty of causing the poor care. A move resulted in somewhat better care until her death in 2008.

Download or read book A Bumblebee s Balcony written by Sundari Sivasubbu and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2019-01-10 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you think you are good enough to pursue the dream that you held dear as a child? Or, did you give it up a long time back because someone said that it was foolish, not possible, or that you were not talented enough for your dream? What if the bumblebee had listened to scientists who snubbed its short, stunted, funny wings, and believed that it could not fly? Is it possible to remain unshackled by, and rise above, the assumptions of a society obsessed with ‘normal’? Do you believe that you can be happy at any time, at any point in your life, despite the circumstances? “A Bumblebee’s Balcony” asks these questions as it traces the joys and pangs of a little girl in a village who has cerebral palsy, and how the big city was the backdrop in her beautiful journey towards self-discovery. It traces the intimate account of ordinary life fraught with physical and socio-psychological barriers: What it’s like to be the odd one out, the tryst with assistive aids, gender-specific barriers, chaotic trials while commuting through various means of transport, insights on workplace diversity, her tumultuous emotional journey, and the pursuit of well-being, spirituality and giving back. The author sees joy and purpose in what could have easily been labelled as maudlin, as she vividly describes the persistent mind-body conflict, the inner and outer battles, the quest to understand her identity, rising above personal and societal prejudices, and succeeding in carving an identity devoid of bitterness. In its true essence, A Bumblebee’s Balcony is a simple, straight-from-the-heart tribute to love, strength, hope and an unshakable faith in the Universe…

Book The Pretty One

Download or read book The Pretty One written by Keah Brown and published by Atria Books. This book was released on 2019-08-06 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the disability rights advocate and creator of the #DisabledAndCute viral campaign, a thoughtful, inspiring, and charming collection of essays exploring what it means to be black and disabled in a mostly able-bodied white America. Keah Brown loves herself, but that hadn’t always been the case. Born with cerebral palsy, her greatest desire used to be normalcy and refuge from the steady stream of self-hate society strengthened inside her. But after years of introspection and reaching out to others in her community, she has reclaimed herself and changed her perspective. In The Pretty One, Brown gives a contemporary and relatable voice to the disabled—so often portrayed as mute, weak, or isolated. With clear, fresh, and light-hearted prose, these essays explore everything from her relationship with her able-bodied identical twin (called “the pretty one” by friends) to navigating romance; her deep affinity for all things pop culture—and her disappointment with the media’s distorted view of disability; and her declaration of self-love with the viral hashtag #DisabledAndCute. By “smashing stigmas, empowering her community, and celebrating herself” (Teen Vogue), Brown and The Pretty One aims to expand the conversation about disability and inspire self-love for people of all backgrounds.

Book Strange Beauty

Download or read book Strange Beauty written by Eliza Factor and published by Parallax Press. This book was released on 2017-08-22 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique and hopeful story of how one woman and her family were transformed by her child's multiple disabilities and inability to talk and how she, in turn, transformed a community. This intimate, no-holds barred memoir shares one family's experiences with a child who is both autistic and physically disabled. It is a story of infectious laughter, blood on the floor, intense physical conflict, and of two little girls growing up in the shadow of their charming and fitful brother. And it is the story of a mother and writer and the illuminating effect of imagining the world through the eyes of her beautiful, charismatic, and nonverbal son, Felix. Felix and his sisters inspire Eliza to start Extreme Kids, a community center that connects families with children with disabilities through the arts and play, and transform how she saw herself and the world. She writes of the joy this project brings her, as well as the disconnect of being lauded for helping others at the same time that she cannot help her own son. As Felix grows bigger and stronger, his assaults against himself grow more destructive. When his bruised limbs and face prompt Child Services to investigate the Factors for abuse, Eliza realizes how dangerous her home has become. Strange Beauty is a personal story, but it shines a light on the combustible conditions many families are living in at this moment. The United States offers parents whose children are prone to violence very little help. That Eliza's story ends happily, with Felix thriving at Crotched Mountain School, is due more to luck than policy. There are few such schools and many such children. When children are violent, we fail to account for the internal and external pressures that lead to violence. This is both cruel and counterproductive, for people with disabilities have much to teach us, if we will only listen.
