Book Art Space and the City

    Book Details:
  • Author : Malcolm Miles
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2005-08-16
  • ISBN : 1134771010
  • Pages : 288 pages

Download or read book Art Space and the City written by Malcolm Miles and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-08-16 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public art - the making, management and mediation of art outside its conventional location in museums and galleries, and the livable city - a concept involving user-centred strategies for urban planning and design, are both socially produced but have emerged from different fields and tend to be discussed in isolation. This book applies a range of critical perspectives which have emerged from different disciplines - art criticism, urban design, urban sociology, geography and critical theory - to examine the practice of art for urban public spaces, seeing public art from positions outside those of the art world to ask how it might contribute to possible urban futures. Exploring the diversity of urban politics, the functions of public space and its relation to the structures of power, the roles of professionals and users in the construction of the city, the gendering of space and the ways in which space and citizen are represented, the book explains how these issues are as relevant to architecture, urban design and urban planning as they are to public art. Drawing on a wealth of images from across the UK and Europe and the USA, in particular, the author questions the effectiveness of public art in achieving more convivial urban environments, whilst retaining the idea that imagining possible futures is as much part of a democratic society as using public space.

Book Public Policy and the Arts A Comparative Study of Great Britain and Ireland

Download or read book Public Policy and the Arts A Comparative Study of Great Britain and Ireland written by Ruth-Balandina M. Quinn and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-08-20 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1998, this volume considers the subject of arts policy as a subject of public policy making proper in UK and Ireland, with a particular focus on theatre as a profession rather than a mere hobby. Previous studies have placed the burden of policy improvements on the arts themselves, looking at what ‘the arts’ can do to be worthy of government funding and favourable policy, and have seen government actions as if they have a uniform effect. This study takes ‘the arts’ out of the abstract and discusses specific ways that diverse activities with even more diverse needs can be best approached with government policy, assessing the strengths and weaknesses of government initiatives. It is aimed at both political scientists and anyone with an interest in arts and cultural policy.

Book Preparing Educators for Arts Integration

Download or read book Preparing Educators for Arts Integration written by Gene Diaz and published by Teachers College Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This resource examines professional development approaches from across the United States to help schools and allied arts groups integrate the arts into an already crowded K–12 curriculum. The authors document the purposes and structures of a broad spectrum of current efforts and programs. Several of these programs have been in place for decades, thus demonstrating their sustainability and effectiveness. Emphasizing the value of collaboration among teachers, artists, educational leaders, and community partners, the book draws on the broad range of experiences of the authors, who came together as a working group of the Arts Education Partnership. Readers will find strong, empirically tested models of arts integration to inform curriculum development and teacher professional learning. “This book affirms an ideal of helping more school children and communities realize the importance of arts integration and how it can make a difference in the classroom, improving the preparation of all for work and life.” —From the Foreword by Jane R. Best, director, Arts Education Partnership “We owe the authors a debt of gratitude for bringing varied perspectives together in this important book.” —Madeleine F. Holzer, former director of educational development, Lincoln Center Institute. Book Community Arts and Culture Initiatives in Singapore

Download or read book Community Arts and Culture Initiatives in Singapore written by Zdravko Trivic and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-09-15 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What Can Space Do for the Arts?; What Can Arts Do for Space?; and What Can Arts and Space Do for the Community? Through the lenses of creative placemaking and neighbourhood arts ecology, Trivic re-examines the position of community arts in the spatial, social and cultural landscape. Emphasising urban design considerations of complex interdependent relationships between arts, space and people, he re-explores the role of community-based arts activities in shaping urban neighbourhoods, enriching public life and empowering communities. This is divided into an analysis of spatial opportunities for the arts in the neighbourhood; and a study of the impacts of bringing arts and culture activities into local neighbourhoods and communities, using Singapore’s nodal approach as a developed case study. Using spatial opportunity analysis, the book demonstrates a step-by-step procedure for identification and evaluation of the neighbourhood spaces that work best for community arts and culture activities. In the study of impacts, Trivic proposes a holistic framework for capturing and evaluating the non-economic impacts of arts and culture, on space, society, well-being, education and participation. An invaluable template for arts event organisers and artists to assess and maximise the outcomes of their creative efforts in local neighbourhoods, as well as an important reading for students and practitioners of neighbourhood planning, urban design, and creative placemaking.
