Book Art History and Fetishism Abroad

Download or read book Art History and Fetishism Abroad written by Gabriele Genge and published by transcript Verlag. This book was released on 2014-12-31 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By focusing on the various modes and media of the fetishised object, this anthology shifts the debates on thingness into a new global art historical perspective. The contributors explore the attention given to those material images, in both artistic and cultural practice from the heyday of colonial expansion until today. They show that in becoming vehicles and agents of transculturality, so called »fetishes« take shape in the 17th to 19th century aesthetics, psychology and ethnography - and furthermore inspire a recent discourse on magical practice and its secular meanings requiring altered art historical approaches and methods.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In Painting Flanders Abroad: Flemish Art and Artists in Seventeenth-Century Madrid, Flemish immigrants and imported Flemish paintings cross the paths of Spanish kings, collectors, dealers, and artists in the Spanish court city, transforming the development and nature of seventeenth-century Spanish painting. Examining these Flemish transplants and the traces their interactions left in archival documents, collection inventories, art treatises, and most saliently Spanish "Golden Age" paintings, this book portrays Spanish society grappling with a long tradition of importing its favorite paintings while struggling to reimagine its own visual idiom. In the process, the book historicizes questions of style, quality, immigration, mobility, identity, and cultural exchange to define what the evolving and amorphous visual concept of "Flemishness" meant to Spanish viewers in an era long before the emergence of nationalism"--

Book Going Abroad

    Book Details:
  • Author : Christine Geoffroy
  • Publisher : Cambridge Scholars Publishing
  • Release : 2009-10-02

Download or read book Going Abroad written by Christine Geoffroy and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009-10-02 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Going Abroad is a book not only for scholars, academics and students who are interested in different approaches to mobility, but also for non-specialists who wish to explore and understand what lies behind the various forms of travel, tourism and migration that are central to today’s—and no doubt tomorrow’s—globalized world. If you are tempted by emigration, enjoy being a tourist, or just love the adventure of travel, real or imaginary, you can embark on a journey of discovery through time and across the continents to explore and reflect on diverse visions of mobility. The practical problems and the differing states of mind experienced by past and present emigrants to France, Spain, Morocco, Capri, Latin America, Canada and Australia, the impact of immigration on the host communities, and the reactions of turn-of-the-century French immigrants to Britain, offer contrasting and complementary perspectives. Along with the real and symbolic meanings of the apparently mundane act of crossing the Channel, stranger forms of travel are also explored: Filipino sailors who are neither at home nor abroad, backpacking across four continents, the real and the fantasized exotic in nineteenth-century orientalist art, and the sanitized utopias of today’s theme parks. Within an inter-disciplinary and a cross-cultural framework, the book explores the terminology, concepts and methodology of a subject which has become the focus of curricula in many academic courses.

Book Jane Peterson

Download or read book Jane Peterson written by Cynthia Roznoy and published by . This book was released on 2017-11-16 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Jane Peterson is exhibiting 33 oil paintings at the St. Botolph Club. There is not a dull canvas in the entire collection and everything is interesting. [French views] seem to be the favorite for this artist, who is young, vivacious and wholly unafraid." - Christian Science Monitor This favorable review of Jane Peterson's first solo show in 1909 marked the beginning of the artist's long exhibiting career. Celebrated for her colorful paintings of festive subjects, Peterson's vibrant images provided a vital link between the impressionist and expressionist movements in American art. This volume presents eighty-eight of Peterson's paintings, examines them critically and traces the artistic life of this intriguing woman. Both critically and popularly acclaimed in the first half of the century, the dominance of abstraction afterwards caused her star to diminish. Largely forgotten by the time of her death in 1965, the essays by Dr. Arlene Katz Nichols and Dr. Cynthia Roznoy shine a light on Peterson-her life and her art-and return her again, to the public eye.

Book Virtuosi Abroad

  • Author : Kiril Tomoff
  • Publisher : Cornell University Press

Download or read book Virtuosi Abroad written by Kiril Tomoff and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2015-08-12 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1940s and 1950s, Soviet musicians and ensembles were acclaimed across the globe. They toured the world, wowing critics and audiences, projecting an image of the USSR as a sophisticated promoter of cultural and artistic excellence. In Virtuosi Abroad, Kiril Tomoff focuses on music and the Soviet Union's star musicians to explore the dynamics of the cultural Cold War. He views the competition in the cultural sphere as part of the ongoing U.S. and Soviet efforts to integrate the rest of the world into their respective imperial projects. Tomoff argues that the spectacular Soviet successes in the system of international music competitions, taken together with the rapturous receptions accorded touring musicians, helped to persuade the Soviet leadership of the superiority of their system. This, combined with the historical triumphalism central to the Marxist-Leninist worldview, led to confidence that the USSR would be the inevitable winner in the global competition with the United States. Successes masked the fact that the very conditions that made them possible depended on a quiet process by which the USSR began to participate in an international legal and economic system dominated by the United States. Once the Soviet leadership transposed its talk of system superiority to the economic sphere, focusing in particular on consumer goods and popular culture, it had entered a competition that it could not win.

Book Russia Abroad

Download or read book Russia Abroad written by Marc Raeff and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1990-04-19 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dramatic events of the twentieth century have often led to the mass migration of intellectuals, professionals, writers, and artists. One of the first of these migrations occurred in the aftermath of the Russian Revolution, when more than a million Russians were forced into exile. With this book, Marc Raeff, one of the world's leading historians of Russia, offers the first comprehensive cultural history of the "Great Russian Emigration." He examines the social and institutional structure of the emigration and describes its rich cultural and intellectual life. He points out that what distinguishes this emigration from other such episodes in European history is the extent to which the emigres succeeded in reconstituting and preserving their cultural creativity in the West. The flourishing Russian communities of Paris, Berlin, Prague and Kharbin not only enriched Russian arts and letters, but also significantly influenced the culture of their Western hosts, and Raeff concludes with an assessment of their impact on the development of modern Western and Soviet culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the simple assertion that "words matter" in the study of visual art, this comprehensive but eminently readable volume gathers an extraordinary selection of words—painters and sculptors writing in their diaries, critics responding to a sensational exhibition, groups of artists issuing stylistic manifestos, and poets reflecting on particular works of art. Along with a broad array of canonical texts, Sarah Burns and John Davis have assembled an astonishing variety of unknown, little known, or undervalued documents to convey the story of American art through the many voices of its contemporary practitioners, consumers, and commentators. American Art to 1900 highlights such critically important themes as women artists, African American representation and expression, regional and itinerant artists, Native Americans and the frontier, popular culture and vernacular imagery, institutional history, and more. With its hundreds of explanatory headnotes providing essential context and guidance to readers, this book reveals the documentary riches of American art and its many intersecting histories in unprecedented breadth, depth, and detail.
