Book Composing Audiovisually

Download or read book Composing Audiovisually written by Louise Harris and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-07-20 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does the Coen Brothers’ Barton Fink have in common with Norman McLaren’s Synchromy? Or with audiovisual sculpture? Or contemporary music video? Composing Audiovisually interrogates how the relationship between the audiovisual media in these works, and our interaction with them, might allow us to develop mechanisms for talking about and understanding our experience of audiovisual media across a broad range of modes. Presenting close readings of audiovisual artefacts, conversations with artists, consideration of contemporary pedagogy and a detailed conceptual and theoretical framework that considers the nature of contemporary audiovisual experience, this book attempts to address gaps in our discourse on audiovisual modes, and offer possible starting points for future, genuinely transdisciplinary thinking in the field.

Book When Music Takes Over in Film

Download or read book When Music Takes Over in Film written by Anna K. Windisch and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-05-02 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access collection deals with musical moments in film as one of the most pivotal and compelling issues of current film music research. Musical moments as defined by Amy Herzog occur when a musical number inverts the normal relationship between the image track and the soundtrack in a film in such a way that what we see is determined by what we hear. As one potential approach, this definition provokes a variety of perspectives to investigate the disruptive potential of these moments and numbers as a creative device in the production of audiovisual narratives. In this sense, the book responds to a need for an anthology that introduces students as well as scholars of cinema, musicology, media studies and cultural studies more broadly, to recent discourses in film music scholarship. The volume includes contributions by early career researchers as well as by established experts in the fields of musicology, film studies, media studies, and cultural studies, promoting cross-disciplinary collaboration in film music research.

Book AVICOM Tagungsband

Download or read book AVICOM Tagungsband written by Michael H. Faber and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2020-06-08 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How has the audiovisual and digital communication of museums and other cultural institutions changed in the past decades? What changes can be observed in media design? With which audiovisual possibilities can cultural assets be reconstructed or shown and conveyed in their lost historical context? How to restore or reconstruct damaged or destroyed audiovisual cultural property, e.g. old film documents? Such aspects were the focus of the AVICOM conference, which took place in 2019 as part of the General Conference of the International Council of Museums in Kyoto. Selected lectures are published now in this richly illustrated book. Media experts and museum professionals also present examples of good cultural mediation through special applications, websites, virtual or augmented reality and in the form of interactive and virtual exhibitions and museums. Another focus is the use of media for cooperation with social minorities and marginalized groups, as well as for reducing barriers and promoting inclusion.

Book Expanding Practices in Audiovisual Narrative

Download or read book Expanding Practices in Audiovisual Narrative written by Chris Hales and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-10-16 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last twenty or so years have seen a phenomenal expansion in the variety of forms of creative and narrative audiovisual expression. The increasing role of relatively recent developments such as the internet, mobile telephony and computer gaming, which complement the narrative representation of more traditional media, seems to have acted as a catalyst to unfreeze the standard types of story form that had been appearing on screens for over a hundred years. Storytelling has taken on new forms, in the physical format(s) of the narrative material, the place or device where it is experienced, and the way it is accessed by the viewer – in particular, a viewer who might now also be a creator, modifier, or active participant in the represented audiovisual experience. Including texts by leading media scholars Erkki Huhtamo and Ryszard W. Kluszczynski, this book offers both historical and contemporary analyses of a variety of these “expanding practices in audiovisual narrative”. Chapters discuss mobile and locative (and hybrid) narrative media; the connection between computer gaming and more traditional forms of storytelling and game-playing; the use of computational algorithms to organise and access narrative content; and explain how the traditional documentary film form is being transformed by the potential of the audience to participate in, or change the form of, a non-fictional narrative. Historically, the work of Luc Courchesne and Radúz Činčera is analysed, as is the media-archaeological context of interactivity, pushing buttons, and group experiences. Narrative forms will undoubtedly continue their process of expansion and evolution, such that one can never truly represent the “state of the art” of current practice in audiovisual digital media. Nevertheless, the articles presented here offer useful source material to inform scholars and practitioners from a variety of related fields about certain historical, cultural and theoretical aspects of the evolution of the narrative form in the digital age.

Download or read book The Medium is the Medium written by James Andrew Nadeau and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On March 23rd 1969 Boston's public television station WGBH broadcast a program titled The Medium is the Medium. The program was a half-hour long compilation of short videos by six artists. The six pieces ranged from electronically manipulated imagery set to the music of the Beatles to an attempt at communication between four separate locations through audio-visual technology. As the narrator, David Oppenheim, the cultural executive producer for the Public Television Laboratory, intones at the beginning of the show, "what happens when artists explore television?" What happened was a program unlike anything seen before. The Medium is the Medium was the result of the pairing of artists with engineers. This pairing was the brainchild of the Rockefeller Foundation, which decided to bring these two together in what was the Artists-in-Television program. Founded in 1967 it gave seed grants to two public broadcasting stations, WGBH in Boston and KQED in San Francisco. These grants enabled the stations to begin residency programs matching artists with members of their production staffs. Several of the artists in the program had made films but most were coming to this type of time-based art work for the first time. The Artists-in Television program gave these artists the opportunity to expand their ideas into an art from involving television technologies. It offered those working in more traditional media the technology and expertise to try their hands at a nascent art form, video.

Download or read book Plug Play Places written by Robert Nadler and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2014-10-08 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In post-industrial societies more and more people earn an income in creative knowledge work, a highly flexible labour market segment that demands a geographically mobile workforce. Creative knowledge work is based on an understanding of language, culture and symbolic meanings. This can best be obtained through local and national embeddedness. Yet, this necessity for embeddedness stands in contrast to the demand in geographical mobility. How is this contradiction solved by individuals? What new forms of place attachment does this bring about? This book introduces a showcase of 25 multilocal creative knowledge workers, who live in different countries at the same time. It investigates how continuous mobility becomes part of their lifeworld, and how it changes their feelings of belonging and practices of place attachment. Applying an innovative methodological mix of social phenomenology, hermeneutics and mental mapping, this book takes a detailed look at biographies and the role of places in mobile lifeworlds. Plug&Play Places brings forth the idea that places have to be understood as individual items, which are configured and then plugged into the ‘system’ of the own lifeworld. They can be ‘played’ without great effort once an individual needs to make use of them. This new type of place attachment is a form of subjective standardization of place, which complements the well-known models of objective standardization of places. Plug&Play Places is relevant for scientists who deal with mobility and its impact on individual lifeworlds, with transnational multilocality and with flexibilized labour markets. Furthermore, the book provides a detailed qualitative perspective which can enrich the explanations of quantitative research in the same field. It is an interesting reading also for practitioners engaged in urban planning, housing and real estate development. Robert Nadler holds a doctoral degree in Urban and Local European Studies from the University of Milan-Bicocca. He is a researcher at the Leibniz Institute for Regional Geography and published on creative industries, multilocality and labour mobility.
