Book Artisanal Fishers on the Kenyan Coast

Download or read book Artisanal Fishers on the Kenyan Coast written by Jan C. Hoorweg and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Overexploitation of natural resources is often associated with poverty among local populations. A multi-disciplinary team studied artisanal fishers along the Kenyan coast on the Indian Ocean. The main focus of the research was on income diversification of fishers, the pressure on marine resources and the relation between the two. Income diversification did not reduce the pressure on the marine environment. Rather, indications are that many part-time fishers are entering the profession. Moreover, fishers with alternative employment stayed in-shore and used damaging gear more often. Policies to stimulate employment opportunities for coastal communities cannot be expected to lessen the pressure on marine resources and need to be planned carefully in terms of industry location, labour requirements and degree of coastal pollution.

Book Challenges in Tropical Coastal Zone Management

Download or read book Challenges in Tropical Coastal Zone Management written by Matthias Wolff and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-01-16 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on tropical coasts, which are highly vulnerable due to a multitude of stressors. Population growth is substantial, habitats are lost and biodiversity is reduced at an alarming rate, severely affecting many ecosystem services. This situation calls for sound coastal management and the effective engagement of all relevant stakeholders. About two decades ago the M.Sc. program ISATEC (International Studies in Aquatic Tropical Ecology) was created at Bremen University (Germany) to train young scientists for a professional engagement in the complex field of tropical coastal and resource management. This book provides a platform for those Alumni to report on their work experiences and findings in their home countries and covers all regions of the tropical belt. Part I of the book provides a short review of the state of the tropical ocean and its resources and of international attempts towards sustainable ocean management starting with the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development in 1992. Part II deals with country case studies, and part III focuses on an evaluation & synopsis of those contributions. Emerging key issues for management and conservation of the tropical coastal environments are presented and critical challenges on the path towards reaching the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are discussed, as are the needs for enhancing research and capacity development.

Book Assessment of fisheries innovations for investment and financing in Kenya

Download or read book Assessment of fisheries innovations for investment and financing in Kenya written by van Anrooy, R., Gietzen, T., Yang, L., Ngugi, C., Otieno, S., Essel, T. and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2022-10-01 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To make small-scale fisheries in Kenya more sustainable, fishers need to invest in responsible fishing operations and technologies, reduce overfishing, contribute to fisheries management, and implement climate change adaptation measures. Small-scale fishers often do not have access to financial services to innovate and to make the necessary transition to sustainable fishing operations. Access to financial services will help them to innovate and adopt measures that will provide social, economic and environmental returns, the desired triple bottom line. The African Rural and Agricultural Credit Association (AFRACA) and FAO, in collaboration with the State Department for Fisheries, Aquaculture and the Blue Economy in Kenya, implemented a project to analyse and improve the access of small-scale fishers to financial services in Kenya. The project identified the key finance- and fisheries sector stakeholders, carried out surveys and interviews, and conducted a techno-economic performance analysis of some small-scale fishing fleets, to investigate the potential innovations for investment. A two-day stakeholder workshop was held in 2021, in which the participants agreed to constitute a CAFI-SSF Network Kenyan Chapter. AFRACA developed and tested training materials on lending to the fisheries sector for financial service providers. This circular provides a summary of the project achievements.

Book Adapting Institutions

Download or read book Adapting Institutions written by Emily Boyd and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-10-27 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global environmental change is occurring at a rate faster than humans have ever experienced. Climate change and the loss of ecosystem services are the two main global environmental crises facing us today. As a result, there is a need for better understanding of the specific and general resilience of networked ecosystems, cities, organisations and institutions to cope with change. In this book, an international team of experts provide cutting-edge insights into building the resilience and adaptive governance of complex social-ecological systems. Through a set of case studies, it focuses on the social science dimension of ecosystem management in the context of global change, in a move to bridge existing gaps between resilience, sustainability and social science. Using empirical examples ranging from local to global levels, views from a variety of disciplines are integrated to provide an essential resource for scholars, policy-makers and students, seeking innovative approaches to governance.
