Book excerpt: Matthew Luckiesh DSc, DE, (1883-1967) was an American physicist and, as the Director of General Electric's Lighting Research Laboratory at its Nela Park National Lamps Works facility in East Cleveland, Ohio, he pursued research on light and vision. In his day, he was known as the Father of the Science of Seeing. Luckiesh developed several theories on color and its physiological effect on people. He was also interested in determining the conditions under which optimal visibility was achieved, and in examining the relationship between light and seeing, in order to design better types of lamps. During World War I he studied camouflage, and later invented artificial sunlight and germicidal lamps. He produced eleven U. S. patents, 28 books and about 860 scientific and technical articles, published between 1911 and 1960. His works include: Color and its Applications (1915), Artificial Light: Its Influence Upon Civilization (1920), Visual Illusions (1922), The Book of the Sky (1922), Foundations of the Universe (1925), The Science of Seeing (with Frank K. Moss) (1937), Color and Colors (1938) and Light, Vision and Seeing (1944).

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Artificial Light: Its Influence Upon Civilization In the following pages I have endeavored to discuss artificial light for the general reader, in a manner as devoid as possible of intricate details. The early chapters deal particularly with primitive artificial light and their contents are generally historical. The science of light-production may be considered to have been born in the latter part of the eighteenth century and beginning with that period a few chapters treat of the development of artificial light up to the present time. Until the middle of the nineteenth century mere light was available, but as the century progressed, the light-sources through the application of science be came more powerful and efficient. Gradually mere light grew to more light and in the dawn of the twen tieth century adequate light became available. In a single century, after the development of artificial light began in earnest, the efficiency of light-production in creased fifty-fold and the cost diminished correspond ingly. The next group of chapters deals with various economic influences of artificial light and with some of the byways in which artificial light is serving man kind. On passing through the spectacular aspects of lighting we finally emerge into the esthetics of light and lighting. Book Ecological Consequences of Artificial Night Lighting

Download or read book Ecological Consequences of Artificial Night Lighting written by Catherine Rich and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2013-04-16 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While certain ecological problems associated with artificial night lighting are widely known-for instance, the disorientation of sea turtle hatchlings by beachfront lighting-the vast range of influences on all types of animals and plants is only beginning to be recognized. From nest choice and breeding success of birds to behavioral and physiological changes in salamanders, many organisms are seriously affected by human alterations in natural patterns of light and dark. Ecological Consequences of Artificial Night Lighting is the first book to consider the environmental effects of the intentional illumination of the night. It brings together leading scientists from around the world to review the state of knowledge on the subject and to describe specific effects that have been observed across a full range of taxonomic groups, including mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians, fishes, invertebrates, and plants. Ecological Consequences of Artificial Night Lighting provides a scientific basis to begin addressing the challenge of conserving the nighttime environment. It cogently demonstrates the vital importance of this until-now neglected topic and is an essential new work for conservation planners, researchers, and anyone concerned with human impacts on the natural world.

Book excerpt: Tracing the fascinating history of human light, from stone lamps to the lightbulb, the story of light is also the story of evolving humanity. The class, social and environmental implications of providing light has shaped historical eras: crude lamps and tallow candles constricted waking hours and drove the crazed hunting of whales for their oil towards environmental disaster. Gaslight helped to create leisure hours in the evening and allowed the emergence of vibrant street life in cities while incandescent light changed the ways we live and sleep. Jane Brox asks the reader to consider the cost of the current grid system for providing light.
